The house was home from home comfort. Cleanliness, equipment, garden, linen, etc all very high standard. The best bit of this property was "The Snug" which was on the top floor commanding a magnificent view and was such a lovely place to relax in real comfort. We can highly recommend this property. You've got to like stairs and a steep hill though!

Beautiful and well tended (and safe for young children) garden and patio. Scrupulously clean house, stocked with high-end fixtures, fittings, crockery, etc. Quaint nautical touches around the house, with a range of interesting hardback books on the Dartmouth area, and its history. The photos don't do the Snug on the top floor justice.. it really is the cherry on the cake! Property owner Malcolm responds promptly and helpfully. A real gem of a property!

  • "The house is in a great location; just a few minutes walk from the centre of the town."

The last few yards are steep, but we didn't have any problems (we are in our late 60s). The parking pass was a bonus as we didn't move the car all week, just using local buses and ferries to get around. The view from the 'snug' on the top floor of the house was our favourite view out of all the homes we have stayed in. You can see over the town, the river estuary and Kingswear on the other side of the River Dart. The view out of the bedroom on the second floor was also great to wake up to. This was a great holiday destination and house; we couldn't have wished for better.

  • "Firstly let me say we loved Onedin House - the central location into town is fantastic, the views are awesome, the house is so well equipped (with the exception only of a rolling pin and pastry brush!"

) and the garden with outside seating areas just lovely. The parking arrangements worked well and unloading/loading the car wasn't a particular issue for us although it is a narrow, steep road and larger vehicles may have problems. I don't think we were quite prepared for the number and steepness of the stairs in the house - but that's a small price to pay for the other positives. The only real criticism I have is the double bed mattress on the first floor. It was like trying to sleep on a marshmallow - some people may love it, but all the members of our party tried that bed out and the opinion was unanimous - it is too soft and for anyone with back issues, it is very uncomfortable. Fortunately we were able to spread around the house and use the other beds, but if 6 people were in the house together, I suspect that 2 of them would be rather unhappy with sleeping arrangements. That mattress aside, the rest were firm and supportive. Thank you, Malcolm, for sharing your beautiful house with us - I am fairly certain we will return soon!

Hi Clare, Thanks for such positive feedback, earlier this year. I believe the house already has more than usual home cooking items for a holiday home because these were enhanced for a couple who were house-hunting, and stayed for several months during lockdown. Anyway, the rolling pin and pastry brush have now been added to the inventory for your return visit. Your report about the mattress in the first floor bedroom was more concerning. All mattresses in the house started off life as firm, but your feedback was the first one to report that a new mattress was needed on the first floor and that was installed soon after your stay. I hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back with a roller and a firm mattress! Malcolm Property Owner

  • "Our 3rd stay here; a beautiful house in a very convenient location."

Generally a great stay. Recommend you update the photos as they’re the same as 14 years ago, to do the property justice. Excellent value added with the snug! However, the mattress in the top suite needs replacing, it’s very uncomfortable as you sink like you’re in a bucket. Most people of average weight would find this uncomfortable. Also, there appears not to be enough water pressure as the taps & showers upstairs cut out completely at the most inappropriate times-two issues easily rectified. Other than that, it was great!

  • "If you want possibly the best views over Dartmouth then I think you will struggle to find anywhere better than Onedin House."

However it comes at a price and that is Onedin House is located on a very steep hill. Maybe not a good choice if you have any issues with mobility. Loading and unloading the car is interesting as you have to park on the single track hill, while trying not to hold the traffic up to much. Our party consisted of two adults and our two sons aged 6 & 7 the set up worked perfectly for us, The property is well kitted out with all the basics that you need and the two bathrooms make life abit easier The kitchen and garden are all on the ground floor, the first floor is accessed by a steep stair case, here you will find two bedrooms, one as a double and the other as two singles there is also a bathroom on this floor. Accessed again by a steep stair case is the 2nd floor, here is where you find the spacious master bedroom with excellent views, you can lay in bed and watch the lower ferry go about it's business. There is also a very large bathroom on this floor. Now to our favourite room The snug at the top of the house (another staircase) but this room has French doors that open onto a small balcony, from here you can see most of Dartmouth and Kingswear. The snug has a couple of sofa's and TV. You really can spend hours there just watching the world go by. Finally a great house with superb views and great location close to town.

  • "We had a wonderful stay at Onedin House."

Everything about it exceeded our expectations. It was perfectly situated. The property was spacious enough for our family of 5 adults to either sit together or lose each other completely within the house! It was tastefully and comfortably furnished with a full range of kitchen equipment etc. The level of cleanliness was high throughout. The snug at top of the house with it's wonder harbour views was a bonus. The delightful well tended garden and the patio space was a lovely little sun trap for morning coffee. We appreciated the seaside touches around the property and enjoyed the references to the property's history. Our estate car struggled to get up the hill beyond the house on the day of our arrival so all passengers jumped out and took our bags out so that the driver could drive to the top and turn around. The Mayor's Avenue car park is a very short walk from the house (approx 5 mins) so on our last day we carried our bags and belongings to the car park in a few stints to avoid parking on the hill outside the house to load up. Lovely coastal walks beyond the castle. The town seemed to be coping well and respectfully within Covid guidelines. We had such a lovely tranquil week. It was perfect!

All bedrooms are of a good size, the kitchen is well equipped, and the whole house was pristine. There is a small garden with lovely roses and lavender. The living room at the top of the house is a wonderful bonus. We enjoyed sitting there in the evenings, admiring the spectacular view. The owner has thoughtfully provided many books on local history, attractions and walks which helped us plan our days. • "House is very nice, location good and very well equipped (particularly snug with lots of DVDs, music and lots of local information and walks)."

However when we arrived the house was very, very dusty and the cleanliness was definitely not as I would expect. I called the office (Carl was helpful) and the cleaners did come round on the Saturday evening and did some dusting and hoovering of major areas eg chest of drawers, mantelpieces and the heated towel rails in the bathroom! And the bath. My other disappointment was that when I booked I had a conversation with one of your colleagues and specifically said I was looking for somewhere quiet and peaceful. She did point our that two of the properties I was interested in had building work in the close vicinity. However, Onedin House has a major renovation project in a house just across the street, and work was being done mostly starting at 8am. Another house opposite was having a decking put down in front of it and looked like it was also being renovated, and that went on all through the Bank Holiday weekend. So not as quiet and peaceful as I would have liked! Building and renovation work is transient, however it would be helpful if your office had up to date information.

  • "I cannot fault this house, its location, its view and the standard of finish inside."

Lovely rooms, especially the top floor along with its stunning view, great level of utilities, lots of stairs, 39 to be precise which is why they have a 39 steps poster at the top - nice touch. Its quite a steep hill to the property with a 33% gradient. Sink and fridge on the top floor is a great idea so that you don't continually go up and down to make a brew! I have one criticism but its not about this property which I cannot fault, its the parking, You have a permit to park in the local car park about 5 minutes away. I had 3 bad experiences with this car park all within 1 weeks stay. My car was scratched on 2 separate occasions and then one morning I arrived to find my rear number plate was ripped off. Thankfully it was left on the ground beside the car and wasn't broken so I was able to drive to the nearby Sainsburys and buy some double sided tape to re-attach it. But I have to say I would walk from the house down to my car wondering what else would be done to it. The parking is tight and perhaps the 2 scratches (one was considerable were from other cars parking / leaving), I don't know but the number plate ripped off was clearly vandalism. Ive attached a picture of one of the scratches to my car

Unfortunately the first floor bathroom is looking a little tired now and could have been cleaner (particularly the towel rail which was very dusty and had a couple of hairs stuck to it!.) However the house retains it's charm and is well situated for the town centre. Over the years we have found that the view from the garden is becoming less due to the neighbour's growing plant life! but it's still a pleasure to sit out in this well stocked little garden.

  • "Brilliant holiday home, lovely views especially from the small balcony on the top floor."

Very well stocked everything you could need. The walk up the hill is steep and i was gratefull it wasnt further up, but it was not too bad, and worth it for the views. Disappointed there was no welcome pack though. Every other holiday rental I've stayed in provides one of some description. Milk for a cup of tea on arrival after a long journey is always appreciated, bread, butter etc. But apart from that it was one of the nicest places I've stayed in, I would say the photos don't really do it justice.

Dartmouth lies on the banks of the beautiful River Dart estuary in the popular and picturesque South Hams area of South Devon. Located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and close to the coast, Dartmouth is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Devon. It offers a stunning waterfront, ancient narrow streets lined with boutique shops, restaurants and art galleries plus many local events such as the annual Dart Music Festival and the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta, along with the Dartmouth Food Festival held every October. There are many interesting cycling and walking routes around Dartmouth, including the South West Coast Path, the Dart Valley Trail and plenty of quiet country lanes. A trip on the Dartmouth Steam Railway through picturesque countryside to Paignton is a must, and so is a boat trip across to Kingswear and on to Brixham, a pretty little harbour town. For those seeking some beach activities, there is a wide choice in the South Hams area such as Blue Flag Award winner Blackpool Sands, and Slapton Sands, both extremely popular and just a stone's throw from Dartmouth.
