  • "The Old Cider Barn is a gem situated in a peaceful location perfect for relaxing."

Home from home comforts with the added luxury of the copper bath ❤️. The cottage was very clean and spacious, showers were wonderful and lovely fluffy white towels. The beds were extremely comfortable, had the best nights sleep ever. Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful cottage, it was perfect in every way

  • "We loved our stay at the Cider Barn and couldn’t recommend it enough!"

It was beautiful decorated and really well stocked. It was approximately 15 minutes walk into Hope Cove so really well located and we did some great costal walks. We went with 2 other adults and our 2 children (aged 11 and 8). The children’s sleeping areas were up a wooden stair case and I would suggest not suitable for young / mobile children. Mainly if they need to go to the toilet in the night as it was quite steep. My boys loved their ‘den’ though and worked great for us.

  • "Lovely cottage."

Well equipped and clean. Comfortable beds. Everyone slept well. Can’t think of anything the owners need to improve things. Some past reviewers have commented on the downstairs being dark but personally this didn’t bother us. A lovely place to stay!

  • "The Old Cider Barn is a unique place to stay."

It has such character and is extremely well equipped. I appreciated the guidance for appliances and was very pleased to have a TV in the bedroom! Hope cove is nearby and such a charming place. My only negative is that it would have been nice to at least have some milk provided on arrival, I appreciate that you have the view that the supplies of coffee etc mitigate against this, but I didn't use any of these.A small welcome pack is such a nice thing when arriving.

Thank you for your feedback, we know provide fresh milk fro new guests on arrival. Property Owner

It smelt amazing when we went in and was lovely and clean. The bedrooms upstairs are fab (especially the master). I had a bath every night! The location is great. We walked down the Hope Cove on a few occasions and travelled to all of the lovely places nearby. Thank you very much!

  • "My husband and I (and our young dog) have just had a lovely 1 week stay at the Old Cider Barn (my 20 year old daughter and her boyfriend also stayed with us for 3 days)."

The lovingly restored barn is very well situated in a quiet lane not too far from Hope Cove (which is a fair walk or a short drive away). Upstairs is particularly impressive, especially the lovely shuttered windows, the large vaulted ceiling master bedroom and the amazing open copper bath !. We found the barn to be very comfortable and very well equipped. In particular, the corner sofa was very comfortable and the master bed was super king size and very comfy. There was also an abundance of clean towels for our 1 week stay. The upstairs bathroom is modern with a large monsoon overhead shower and the downstairs toilet is a wet room, which was very convenient after several great days out at nearby beaches (for dogs I recommend sandy South Milton Sands and Torcross/Start Bay). I loved the diffuser fragrance wafting through the barn, so much so I emailed the owner Suzy to ask for further details and have since purchased it for my own home (thanks Suzy!). The barn style front and back doors meant that my young 16 month old dog was kept safe. The courtyard garden is small but very quaint. Parking is right outside the kitchen door for 1 car and further parking is available very nearby. We loved nearby Salcombe, a very pretty estuary harbour town (although difficult to park in the centre). We also stumbled across Dartmouth which we loved and nearby Kingsbridge is a lovely town. The food at the Hope and Anchor in nearby Hope Cove was very good (I am Coeliac and they served the most amazing Gluten Free Fish and Chips!) and they were super doggy friendly, we saw several amazing sunsets there too. All in all a great stay!

  • "The barn has been tastefully converted & furnished."

We found the privacy coating on the windows took away a lot of light from the main sitting area. In our opinion plantation shutters would have been better & let in more light but still offering privacy. A welcome pack is always a very nice touch maybe with some local produce in it. The patio seating area doesn’t get any evening sun which is a shame as it’s nice to sit there with a glass of wine at the end of the day. But the beautiful copper bath is perfect for a soak after a long walk. Loved the bedding & general decor. Beds are very comfy. The walks from the barn are stunning looking to Burgh Island or walking to Salcombe. So peaceful. Hope Cove is a pleasant easy walk & we highly recommend the pizzas at The Cove. The barn is a lovely place to stay that with a few tweaks could be fabulous. Highly recommend.

Thank you for your feedback, lovely that you would highly recommend. Whilst we cant alter the aspect of our east / south easterly facing courtyard - which is a natural sun-trap in the mornings though shady from late afternoon, both sets of full length French doors open and are south facing. We do not provide a 'welcome pack' as such though as you will have made use of, have opted to have a more robust kitchen and utility emergency essentials supply; choice of teas, sugar and coffees, cooking oil, ketchup and other condiments together with kitchen roll, cling film, foil, dog treat, tinned foods etc freely available in case our local rural stores have more erratic opening times since COVID. • "We thoroughly enjoyed our weeks stay at the Old Cider Barn in Galmpton near Hope Cove in South Devon."

It was a truly magical stay. The accommodation was outstanding. The thatched barn was furnished to a very high standard and was more than comfortable and clean. The owners Mark & Suzy have clearly researched what holidaymakers look for and need for their holiday stay to go smoothly. The location of the barn was absolutely perfect for exploring the South Devon Coast towns and fishing villages. I would recommend without reservation the Old Cider Barn - a gem of a find in a stunning location! Thank you.

  • "Wonderful holiday home, decorated to a really high standard and thoughtfully equipped for a comfortable stay, you can definitely tell this is a property where the owners stay vs."

one just for rental. We would highly recommend and stay again. Really quiet location, nice walk with the dog along footpath across the fields, easy access to Hope Cove. Parking space ample for a large car. Couple of minor points to raise only - dust behind sofa and had to unblock the shower waste in first floor bathroom as full of hair which stopped water draining away.

  • "The property was very an interesting and generally enjoyable place to stay in although probably not somewhere we would stay during the summer months as the darkened windows give a gloomy atmosphere downstairs even when we did get sunshine."

Also there is no comfortable seating for the patio area. The kitchen cupboards are tricky to open, particularly the dishwasher door due to the heaviness of it and the poor fronted units. We actually hurt our hands on 2-3 occasions. However generally we found it very comfortable once we worked out how to reduce the heat! It would have been very helpful to have had a cot provided as is common to most rental properties. The high-chair was not easy/safe to use as no insert cushion provided. We liked the location very much and hope to return sometime though perhaps without children.

Many thanks for leaving your feedback, we are pleased you had an enjoyable stay. We are surprised to hear that you felt the downstairs of the property had a “gloomy atmosphere’’ as the large French doors let in so much natural light. The cushions for the outdoor furniture are in a cupboard which is advised in the welcome book. We are sorry there was no insert for the high chair however the owner had brought the high chair especially for your booking as you had requested one. We are grateful for the comments in respect of the property and have passed on your feedback to the owner. The Old Cider Barn is indeed in a great location and we hope to welcome you back to the area soon. Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage with excellent decor and facilities within the property (including a luxurious copper bath in the master bedroom)."

The decor is done to a very high standard and is reminiscent of a boutique hotel. I think we were one of the first visitors to stay in the accommodation. The only downside was that there was no internet connectivity at the time, but the owner did tell us ahead of time and I know that they plan to have that installed. Otherwise, an overall 5 star stay. Thank you.

Boasting a picture-perfect exterior with the wooden shutters, thatched roof and exposed stone walls, the interior is equally as stunning for its rather modern and minimal style, with the property's location being perfect for scenic country and coastal walks and visiting Devon's most southern town of Salcombe.

Step into the kitchen and discover a neatly designed space complete with all the appliances you need, including a fridge/freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer.

Continue into the open-plan living and dining room to find the lovely dining area positioned before the French doors which open out onto a Juliet balcony, dine with the doors open on a summer day and feel as though you're in the south of Italy.

Sink into the huge corner sofa or one of the stylish armchairs and enjoy a film on the Smart TV with your loved ones, surrounded by beautiful wooden paneling on the walls and exposed stonework.

Completing the ground floor is the fabulous wet room with a walk-in shower here, with a second shower room on the first floor too.

The industrial-style metal banister and staircase add a creative charm to this property along with a large feature mirror, follow your way up to the spacious landing and find the two bedrooms.

The master bedroom is a stunning space with an impressive super-king-size floating bed, as well as a beautiful freestanding copper bath, both equally as indulgent and a real holiday treat, along with stylish storage space for your things and a lofty high ceiling, you can relax in here on the bed or sofa and watch the Smart TV.

The second bedroom has a double bed and stairs leading up to a mezzanine level where two single beds rest, ideal for a family.

Enjoy making use of the charming little courtyard outside, sitting with a morning coffee amidst the beautiful village.

Just under a mile away is the wonderful beach of Mouthwell Sands at Hope Cove, with a great mix of sands and rocky areas making it a perfect spot for sandcastles, sunbathing and exploring the rockpools.

From here you can hop onto the South West Coast Path and head north to come to the shores of Milton Sands, a National Trust owned beach, continuing up to Bantham.

Travel south to enjoy some expansive seascapes along the coast, past Bolberry Down and up and round to Salcombe, Devon’s most southern town.

Sitting on the banks of the Kingsbridge Estuary, Salcombe is one of the prettiest towns in Devon and is a centre for sailing and a general watersports haven; whether it be kayaking, surfing or paddle boarding, there's an exciting activity for everyone.

Choose to spend time on either North Sands or South Sands beach, perfect for families, and browse the local offerings in the boutique shops and independent businesses for a souvenir to take home with you, and you must head to one of the local restaurants serving freshly caught seafood for a true Salcombe experience.

About the location

HOPE COVE

Salcombe 4.6 miles; Kingsbridge 5.1 miles

The picturesque and unspoiled village of Hope Cove lies in the sheltered curve of Bigbury Bay on Devon’s south coast. A choice destination for families, the two beaches offering soft sand and rock pools for sandcastle building and fishing for small crabs. The town remains a fishing village where crabs and lobsters are still landed, however it was once used by smugglers. Many ships have perished around the coast and the wrecks that lie beneath the waves make it a popular spot for divers. Above the beach there are a number of pubs and restaurants. The coastal footpath can be joined from here and leads towards Bigbury-on-sea in one direction and the coastal resort of Salcombe in the other.
