  • "As described in original descriptions."

Host was welcoming, friendly and pleasant to speak with. Would have been nice to have a shower but am totally aware of limitations of the buildings. As bigger built people , the king bed mattress is showing wear in the respect that we rolled together, but for all that it was cosy and comfortable. We had a lovely quiet relaxing time, thank you.

Piping hot water, a very cosy log burner, and very comfortable beds - everything we needed for an enjoyable holiday. The location right on the moor is perfect for walking and cycling and watching the birds in the garden was a treat. Margaret made sure we had everything we needed and left us a very welcome cake. A perfect cottage to enjoy the moor.

Views are stunning and there is a lovely tree bird station where a variety of birds feast daily. Log burner in the lounge made for cosy, comfy evenings after days on the moor. Cake and tea set out ready was a welcoming touch after the long drive. Perfect as a romantic retreat or for writer's/artists/photographers or other freelance travellers.

Boiler broke whilst we were there but Ms West went out of her away to apologise and even paid for an evening meal by way of good will gesture which wasn’t needed but gratefully received! Even with the boiler issue we still had a lovely time and we appreciate Ms West’s kindness. Can’t wait to return in October.

A big pull being its proximity to Holne Moor: you can just walk up the drive and it is there, the other side of the cattle grid.

  • "This is a delightful cottage on the very edge of Dartmoor, with stunning views and access to the moors from the end of the drive."

The cottage is quite simple but adequate for 4 adults. The kitchen was well enough equipped that self-catering was possible, although it is a little tight for storage space. We really appreciated the 'rustic' conservatory - a really nice space with access to a small courtyard garden. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our time here.

The cottage is simple, but very warm and comfortable, and we very much enjoyed being there. Margaret is extremely helpful and welcoming, but without being over-present, the kitchen is very well equipped, and everything was straightforward to use. And the view from the kitchen and upper bedroom window - it's a wonder I managed to detach myself! Lovely place - we'll be back.

  • "The cottage is lovely inside."

It’s certainly big enough for four people. Excellent and secluded court yard garden. Ideal for remote get away and walking across Dartmoor. The moor is literally at the gate. Be prepared though for a cramped bathroom and challenging plumbing. The bed mattress is very soft. Overall a lovely place it doesn’t feel like your next to a working farm the views from every window are stunningly.

I wouldn't recommend the cottage to anyone with mobility issues as bath could be a little difficult to get in and out off with no real shower facility. The double bed could also be a little firmer, I am ok as I can sleep on anything, but my wife found it uncomfortable, however my son found his bed super comfy. Generally roads are super narrow, but lovely beaches & little towns.

Only yards from the Dartmoor National Park. Two things that need mentioning, not suitable for people with disabilities or issues with walking, two sets of stairs to enter either side of the property are what you would expect in the country as they fit in with the cottage, but not very safe especially if wet. Also the hand shower is only suitable for hair washing and not using as a shower.

Two niggles and the first could easily be rectified. The lighting in the lounge/living area was very poor making it very difficult to read, this was especially regrettable as tv consisted mainly of football/tennis during our visit. Improved lighting is needed. The second which would be impossible to improve, but I believe should be made clear is the bathing problem. The ceiling is too low to shower although the information did say there was a hand shower. I think it should be made clear that it is not possible to stand to take a shower. The bird/wildlife in the garden was a joy to watch and a real treat.

The property

The landscape of the Dartmoor National Park is a unique mix of dramatic tors, wooded valleys, stunning gorges and a sprinkling of picturesque villages.

On the south-eastern slopes of the moor is the quiet village of Holne, where village life centres around the 13th century church and Community Shop & Tearoom.

The Two Moors Way, a long-distance route stretching between Dartmoor and Exmoor, and Buckfastleigh and the ancient stannary town of Ashburton are both four miles away.

Forestoke Linhay is a detached, barn conversion on a small working farm on the edge of Holne.

With open moorland just outside the farm gates it’s an ideal location for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers.

The cottage is traditionally furnished and full of character with exposed stone walls, wooden beams and vaulted ceilings.

The living area is small and cosy, warmed by a wood burning stove.

Adjoining the lounge, there is a rustic conservatory with doors opening onto the enclosed, terraced patio garden.

From the twin bedroom, doors open onto a small patio and the pretty double bedroom has extensive views towards Torquay and Teignmouth, taking in Hembury and Holne Woods.

About the location

ASHBURTON

Newton Abbot 8 miles; Torquay 17 miles; Plymouth 25 miles

The ancient Stannary town of Ashburton lies on the southern slopes of Dartmoor and is an ideal spot from which to explore the rugged high moors to the North and a beautiful coastline to the South. The scenery in this area of South Devon is glorious in all weathers and offers visitors opportunities for walking, pony trekking, canoeing, fishing and lazing on the beach. Ashburton has some interesting artisan shops and with its interesting history and museum, has built a reputation for its high standard of antiques and fine collectables outlets. It also has lovely tea rooms, a wine bar and a fantastic food deli providing fresh fish and olives. In the surrounding area, Dartmoor has many picturesque villages and hamlets with old thatched cottages and ancient churches, surrounded by a patchwork of fields and woodland. Lustleigh, North Bovey, Chagford and Widecombe- in- the- Moor are fine examples. The attractive seaside town of Teignmouth is a half hour drive and the popular Blackpool Sands, although a little further down the coast, is one of South Devon's most beautiful natural treasures. An award-winning privately managed 'Blue Flag' family beach with turquoise blue sea giving it an almost Mediterranean feel. So whether it is moor or coast that you’re seeking for your getaway, Ashburton is a really central town from which to be based.
