"The cottage and its grounds where fantastic, the parking proved to be very muddy and mucky but it was at the bottom of a track so to be expected, boots needed."
i would say every lamp in the place had a dodgy on/off switch. The views are great as is the cottage, lovely and warm and welcoming.
"Hardly any logs for the 1st night."
Suggested to help yourself from the log store which was empty. A pint of milk and some salt an pepper would have been appreciated. As per previous reviews a new sofa is very much needed. On arrival we were unsure exactly where to park as the sign was missing and although advised that the access was "off the beaten track' some photos of this would make it possible to make an informed decision as to whether it would be suitable for your vehicle.
"Have stayed at Eweleaze on Tamarisk Farm many times , my first time in Washingpool."
I loved it . Warm, cosy, with spectacular sea views . Just perfect .
"One criticism relates to the properties facility with respect to a power cut which we had on the Saturday, 28th October."
There were no matches provided to light the wood stove which we may have needed during the power cut through loss of heating.. Secondly it became evident that there was a water leak around the stoves chimney. This was apparent as the top of the stove was wet and during the first storm the leak became very noticable. Apart from the above the property is very good for a short break and we have visited a few times before. The pre-changover check up needs tightening. It was unfortunate that we had the power cut and a storm.
"A FANTASTIC PLACE TO LOSE YOURSELF VERY QUITE AND PEACEFUL"
"This is our third time at Washingpools - we love the peace and quiet and the lovely location."
The track down to the property is becoming rougher every year and there is a large pot hole at the entrance to the track down. It would be nice if that could be filled in and it is difficult to see if any traffic is coming when leaving. Apart from that this is an ideal location to get away from it all.
"Very hard to find."
Say through 2 concrete pillars, they were not visible as covered in ivy. Beautiful location needs a bit updating. Shower head needs replacing. A new settee would be nice too as 1 part not connected. Lots of small spiders but can’t be helped as in an old barn. Outside fantastic walk down to beach could do with a cut back as brambles covering path.
"The cottage was lovely and suited my needs perfectly for a solitary retreat."
The view is stunning and it's wonderfully secluded and quiet. It's perfect for one person but two would struggle I think with the limited space and facilities so I do think it is overpriced for what it offers. Having said that, I was impressed with how clean and smart it was compared with my last visit in 2019.
"This property is a little gem especially if you just want to get away from it all."
It has all the basic facilities you need for a great stay. The position and views are wonderful and its so easy to walk to the beach or travel to different areas of interest. The access is as it states off road and the turning area to park is tricky due to the large hump in the concrete . This really could do with being sorted out to avoid damage to the underside of vehicles. If the weather is wet it becomes even trickier to navigate. A few maintenance problems such as the metal trim on the kitchen window which kept falling off ,broken outdoor chair and broken washing machine were brought to the attention of dream cottages and dealt with appropriately. I enjoyed my second stay tremendously especially with brilliant weather and my dogs had a great time. Ive already booked again for next year. On
"Enjoyed the stay."
The property was not the Ritz but it was not Ritz money. The property was clean and had all the facilities needed. The position was extremely quiet which is what I wanted. Would I go back? Yes I would.
"Lovely cottage in a stunning location."
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and enjoyed the peace and quiet. We enjoyed walking through the fields with our dog and you can easily access the beach from here. A visit to the Club House is a must if you enjoy fresh seafood and luxurious cocktails! A slight negative was the washing machine not working but this did not effect our stay in any way. Providing basic condiments and perhaps a pint of milk for guests would be advantageous but again not essential. Top tip for people looking to book Washingpools - cover your car as the local pigeons thoroughly enjoyed defecating on ours!
"We really enjoyed our stay We liked: The layout, the cosyness, the views, the information and equipment."
Our suggestions: Replace the shower head Fix the reclining chair Overall A very nice place and a great way to relax
"We had a lovely week at West Bexington."
The cottage was really comfortable and set in the most beautiful location. This is a very special place thank you for sharing it with us.
"This was our 2nd time staying at Washingpools Cottage and yet again we had a lovely stay over the Christmas Period and views of the Jurrasic Beach."
Just a couple of things that could be looked at, the end chair of the Sofa keeps coming away from the centre seat and can easily tip over when getting off it. Also when it rains its dripping down onto the log burner from the roof. Thank you for a Brilliant Stay
"First time staying here and we were a bit nervous because some of the reviews were quite negative."
So glad we took the chance. The cottage was clean, equipment all good and property clearly looked after.
"Great peaceful location close to beach great for the dog"
"My seventeenth year of staying at Washing Pools usually twice a year!"
I'll be back ...
"Beautiful location, quiet and peaceful."
Perfect for a quiet holiday. Ideal if you want to be off the beaten track.
"Washing Pools was the perfect place for two people and two dogs."
Overlooking fields and Lyme Regis offers a spectacular sea view and coastline - we were very lucky with the weather. And if you enjoy walking, peace and quiet, and lots of rabbits for the dogs to chase (sorry rabbits!), this is the place for you. Five minutes away from the Club House Restaurant and The Manor Restaurant Hotel (+bar) and the farm shop at Modbury Farm was an added bonus. The place needs a few tweaks but we'd definitely book again.
"This is now my third time staying at Washingpools as a hideaway and it's great to see visitors' previous feedback being taken on board and the property gradually upgraded (new curtains and a new bed since this time last year)."
Next on my list for improvements would be a shower curtain to keep spray off the toilet and opposite wall, and better cleaning between lettings to remove dog hair (the rug, and under the sofa). Looking forward to booking again soon.
"The cottage was as expected, but the track to it was awful, and the parking was very difficult, could easily wreck tyres and suspension, while I appreciate the warning about the track it was extremely difficult getting cases and provisions to and from the cottage and very dangerous exiting the track onto the road ."
..on the info there is a telephone number for the owners ...but there isn't a mobile signal there .....we liked the cottage but the .acces is terrible
"Spent the Easter Weekend at Washing Pool Cottage and what a lovely Cottage it is with great views of the big beach."
Everything was just perfect for me and my partner and our dog
"For us Washing Pools was an excellent property."
Just the right size and with good facilities for two people and a dog. Great views down over fields to the sea. If you enjoy walking, peace and quiet, and a few hills, then this is the place for you. There are local pubs and at West Bexington beach there is the 'Club House Restaurant'. The nearest proper shop is in Abbotsbury or Burton Bradstock. Also, a very good farm shop at Modbury Farm. Bridport is not far away. We enjoyed some lovely short walks with our dog - Rolo. Plus Abbotsbury Gardens and Portland Bill.
"We ignored the few bad reviews, noted that some people have been staying for 12 and 15yrs, took a few essentials, loo roll, tea towel etc, a bag of logs - and needed none of them!"
A very comfortable stay in a warm, well equipped, and clean cottage, so a big thank you to all involved in proving an ideal place to get away from city life. We hope to visit again in summer, although even in February and the company of Storm Dudley one day, we were able to visit many local places of interest including Abbotsbury. Thank you again.
"My husband and I have been going to the Washingpools Cottage since 2012."
This time around the management of the cottage was very poor, in term of cleanliness and basic equipment available. A dream cottage agent came to assess my complaint and agree that due to Covid, they were no time for propel cleaning, basic inventory and past guests probably stealing items. Very poor management indeed.
"Hidden down a track amongst the organic vegetables, you'll find this perfect place for two with a superb view of the sea."
"Only one toilet roll, an eighth of a bottle of washing up liquid, no kitchen roll, cooking foil and various other 'dry provisions' needed - this could really be improved."
I know from years of staying at Washing Pools (over 15 years) sometimes a couple of times a year to bring this stuff with me but it must annoy other guests.
"Really enjoyable stay at Washing Pools."
The accommodation was clean and comfortable with amazing views over the beach. Would definitely come again. Only wish they had a couple of deckchairs but other than that perfect.
"We have stayed at washingpools on a number of occasions and we are booked to stay in November."
We find it the most fantastic place to stay. We would highly recommend. So quite lovely view.
"The actual accommodation/location and quirkiness of the property was superb, but i would suggest that a shower curtain be put up in the bathroom as the water soaks everything and gets everywhere, and the curtains in the bedroom could do with some new hooks and hung properly and finally the 2 seater picnic table needs attention as im sure in not the distant future the seat will break on someone when sitting on it Let downs."
.... just plain Dirty... i appreciate it will never be spotless but to be told by dream cottages you cannot check into the property until 5 o'clock due to cleaning/changeover etc then i would expect it to be fairly clean and checked ready for the next clients... we spent an hour or so cleaning.. i mean the leather sofa was dirty and sticky, the inside of all the cupboards were filthy which in turn made the plates/cups sticky (due to the mess that we wiped out i do not think this has been cleaned for months), various cutlery was left in the draw dirty A fabulous stay which could of been an exceptional stay if the house keeping was up to scratch.
"A lovely hideaway!"
I've been before, and I would stay again. The lounge/dining area is very comfortable with a great sea view. The kitchen is well equipped. The bedroom is cosy with limited storage but adequate for a small stay. The bathroom would benefit from a shower curtain to keep spray off the toilet etc. The outside area is great, and I love that it opens onto a field, with access to the beach. I would have liked a parasol for the patio table. Be aware this property allows pets so there may be a bit of dog hair and dog smell left over - hard for even the best cleaning regime to get rid of!
"This very tiny but perfect cottage has the most amazing views and setting."
From the approach through a market garden and orchard to arrive over the small bridge into the delightful garden with views over Chesil beach right along to Golden Cap and Lyme Regis. The 5 minute walk to the sea over mown paths was delightful. After three months of lockdown this place was such a tonic. Inside it is quite simple but well considered and unobtrusive and comfortable. It is not high luxury but just what you need for a quiet retreat. We loved the fact that there was no WiFi- at last a break from the zoom screen. The bedroom though really sweet with windows on two sides is very small indeed- more like a chalet..Again the views from the sofa and the wood burning stand out as highlights. We had such a lovely peaceful and joyous time and will definitely be back.
"If you want to be far from the madding crowd then this cottage is for you."
Us and our two doggies had a fabulous week. We felt at home as soon as we arrived. Just set the fire, enjoy a walk on Chesil beach and then come back light the fire and watch the sun set over the sea from the cottage windows. No need to venture much furthur. Perfect. For me, a wool addict, an added bonus was the organic wool grown on the farm for sale at the farm shop.
"A wonderful, cute, and cosy little cottage."
Perfect for a couple and their pooch. Beautiful location, quiet and off the beaten track, with fantastic view of Chesil beach. V comfortable bed and decent shower. The sofa was V comfortable, but a bit strange that it was in 3 parts, and would sometimes drift apart from each other. Overall, we loved staying at Washingpools, and would definitely stay there again, and recommend to others. Thank you.
"We have stayed at Washingpools for many years."
Recent changes to the property have not been positive. The doors to the bathroom and bedroom do not latch. There are no shelves in the bathroom for toiletries any more. When we arrived, storm Alex was with us, we wanted to light the stove but no logs available. We tried phoning Dream Cottages for some assistance on this, but no reply. Tamarisk Farm is organic and in previous years there was recycling of rubbish and a compost bin for vegetable waste, but no more. The farm has a shop, but there is no mention of this in the visitor information book and it directs you to a farm shop on the other side of Bridport. It seems the cottage has been divorced from the rest of the farm, which is a shame. The location and views are still wonderful and hopefully can't be spoilt, so we will be returning.
"We have been to Washingpools before, so knew what we were going go get, but weren't sure how Coronavirus was going to affect our stay."
As it happened, very little - all amenities were still there, including toilet roll, kitchen roll, bin bags, towels and duvet/pillow case covers, cushions for the sofa, so we didn't feel this was any different to other holidays.. The only minor difference was a slightly later check in time of 5pm rather than 3pm to allow more cleaning time - no great hardship (and no change to check-out time of 10am). The place is exactly as described online, combined living room/kitchen with a magnificent sea view, wet room/toilet with shower, and a bedroom with a very comfortable double bed. Duvet was a winter one and the weather was red hot, but the week before had been the coldest August bank holiday ever, so this is completely understandable. As to the local area, the local hotel and cafe are still open for business, and happy to have visitors. The surrounding towns (Bridport/Weymouth/Lyme Regis) were all busier than usual for the second week in September, but we put this down to more people staycationing.. Having said that, the location of Washingpools at the bottom of a market garden, in a village with only one road in (which stops at the sea) is an ideal place for (self) isolation - we could easily have seen no-one for the entire week if we'd have stayed in and around the cottage. All in all, Washingpools in West Bexington is still a brilliant destination for a couple with or without a dog (any more may feel a little cramped).
"Good for walking the dog ."
cottage needed a couple of shelves in the bathroom, shower is just about adequate, tv kept getting interference in the evening .other than that nice location
"Washingpools is described as being off the beaten track and that's what it is."
It's small and cosy but more than big enough for 2 adults and a labrador. It's secluded and has a perfect view of the sea. A short walk over the fields gets you to the beach. Its location couldn't be better really. There's loads to do in the area... Bridport/West Bay/Lyme Regis/Abbotsbury were all favourites. We found the cottage had everything you need and would recommend it. The ONLY downside to a week in Dorset in August when the weather is sunny is wasps and you can't do much about them. Great week away, great cottage.
"Loved the location and the views."
Quiet, cosy and ‘isolated’ cottage and yet, very close to the village and the couple of restaurants in it. We had a most enjoyable time.
"A lovely little cottage"
"We spent a fantastic time at the Washingpools."
We found it easily, Location is georgeous and the cottage itself is lovely. The equipment is a bit basic, but not a problem at the end. But unfortunately, it wasn't too clean. Carpets and sofa were found filthy and the location smells of "wet dog coat". Sorry to say that, we're not meant to complain, but that was unfortunately remarkable.
"I sent you an email regarding this with photos."
It was not suitable for a disabled wheelchair user and it was like going back to the 1950's with poor facilities, very small and needed updating with it's utensils and furnishings. Please look at my email as I have enclosed photos.
"The setting was perfect."
The cottage was cosy, everything we needed was there including vases which was perfect for our beautiful flowers we were given for our 40th wedding anniversary, which we celebrated whilst we were on our holiday. We would not hesitate to come back again hopefully this year but definitely next year. It was a little piece of heaven. Our dog really enjoyed her stay as well, walks everywhere came home for a rest. Only negative was the sofa had a mind of its own, when you put the leg rest out you had to remember when you went to get up you had to sit up slowly and push legs down slowly or you would be catapulted forward giving my husband great amusement each time it happened.(Laughing as I am remembering this.)We would like to thank you for a wonderful stay. We will always remember our 40th anniversary because of this beautiful place. Mr and Mrs Ashanollah and Cheyenne our dog.
"The cottage was just Beautiful."
It looks tiny on the outside but just perfect for two and a dog. It was such beautiful views from the table and from the sofa. Really lovely walks fields and easy walk to the beach. We loved our peaceful holiday

"We had a lovely short break at Washingpools with our dog."
The cottage was quaint and was equipped with everything we needed for a quiet relaxing stay. The 'off the beaten track' location was was perfect for what we wanted and it was great to be able to just step out of the front door and take the short walk across the fields to the beach. Could have easily stayed longer. Stayed February 2017

About the location
Abbotsbury 3 miles; Bridport 6 miles.
Lying next to the sea and Chesil Beach, equidistant between Burton Bradstock and Abbotsbury, is the small village of West Bexington. This is a stunning area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as an area of Special Scientific Interest - pebbled Chesil Beach, which extends for 14 miles, from Burton Bradstock to the Portland peninsula, is part of the Jurassic Coast and now a World Heritage Site. Fishermen and walkers are well provided for, as a great variety of fish can be caught at any time of year, and the South West Coastal Path runs right alongside the beach. Only confident swimmers should attept to swim here, but Weymouth, offering lovely, gently shelving sands, is only a short drive away. There's lots to see and do within easy reach of the village. No journey to this area would be complete without a visit to picturesque Abbotsbury, 3 miles, with its Swannery, Tithe Barn and Sub Tropical Gardens, with Dorchester, Bridport, and Lyme Regis all within easy reach.
Note: max 2 people.
Note: no WiFi.
Note: whilst part of Washingpool's charm is being 'off the beaten track' and surrounded by countryside, please be aware that the access is quite literally off the beaten track! There is a short drive of 2-3 minutes down a private road which is bumpy and unmade in places. The last 20 yards from the parking area is on foot down a concrete slope to a small metal walkway over a pretty little stream and then a few steps across grass to the front door. Please do not deviate from the concreted area as you may get stuck in the mud.
Note: please take care when turning your car, there is a bump in the concrete paving and grass opposite so stay on the paved area whilst turning.
Note: we advise arriving in daylight to find the access lane and onward to the property. Please bring a torch if arriving in the dark.
Note: Wessex Water will be relining waste pipes in the local area from Feb 26th – Mar 15th 2024. Access to be maintained.
