  • "A beautiful, well equipped property set in a lovely, peaceful location."

Easy access to walks and several lovely beaches. Enclosed garden with wild orchids flowering during our visit. Well stocked with books, games and dvds in case of poor weather. Dog friendly. Who could ask for more?

  • "One of the best properties we have ever stayed in."

The photos don't do it justice & Jill was so helpful and lovely. Everything you need is there. Cleanliness, attention to detail, style, comfort & welcome pack deserve more than 5 stars! Great location for exploring both islands & so much to see within 30 minutes drive as well. Reef beach a few min drive or 30min walk has to be seen to be believed. Loved this holiday so much we are looking at dates to return.

The cottage is so cosy and equipped with everything we needed for a brilliant week. Super comfy beds, lovely shower, cosy fire and lots of Harris tweed! We loved returning to the cottage after long days exploring these special islands and were treated to a beautiful northern lights display on our last night. We hope to be back!

  • "The Barn at Reef is what heaven feels like!"

The place was immaculate when I arrived and was so cosy, inviting and warm. I brought my parents along to enjoy the place with me, and they were in awe of the little peninsula that Reef was situated. The beaches are simply stunning, the sunrises with our dog, Jura will be cherished for years. If someone wished to escape from civilisation for a week or more, this would be the perfect place to do it with a fantastic local community just 15mins away.

It's rare to find so much (kitchen tools, books, boardgames, etc) in a holiday let. It was very warm the week we were there in August and Jill was immediately responsive to our request for fans - it was much appreciated when they arrived the next day. A lovely stay, thanks very much!

Beautifully presented, very well-equipped and cosy - we loved the steaming hot shower after Easter sea swims! Perfect for our family of four, the Barn was just as lovely as the photos but felt even more light and spacious in person. Within a short walk of stunning Riof beach, we appreciated the proximity to sights but loved returning to this peaceful spot. Excellent communication from the owner - book without hesitation!

  • "We have just spent a fabulous week touring round Lewis and Harris and retreated back to the Barn each day to unwind and recharge."

The situation is perfect for exploring both parts of the island , with local beaches at Reef and Ardroil if you want to drive less. The amenities were great , there was nothing we wanted for and Jill was a really helpful and kind host. She provided lots of information to help us make the most of our break off season. Often the standard of dog friendly accommodation is not as good but the beautiful Hebridean natural and modern interior and exterior of the Barn didn’t disappoint. We have made lovely memories to hold onto until we return again.

The owner was brilliant at accommodating our requests, nothing was too much trouble. We arrived to a warm cottage with some lovely welcome treats. We wanted a peaceful relaxing Christmas and New year and that's exactly what we got. Beautiful scenery and local walks over the hills and the beach was stunning even in the winter. Thankyou for a magical Christmas which became more magical when the snow arrived.

It was a beautiful holiday destination - both in location and comfort, space and attention to detail. A thoughtfully decorated home with plenty of space made this a very comfortable stay - regardless of what the Lewis weather decided to do! We appreciated the welcome goodies very much too. The Barn is close to many good walks and fantastic beaches - the Uig Community Shop is very close so easy to stock up without travelling far, Uig Sands restaurant also close for a treat, the Uig museum a good little visit and the local distillery if you’re into whiskey! Thank you - we fell in love with this little bit of Lewis and hope to be back.

So much so that we booked to come back next year during our stay here! The Barn surpassed our expectations, a real home from home - it catered to our every need and certainly ranks amongst the best holiday accommodation that we have enjoyed; tasteful and luxurious furnishings and decor yet remaining true to itself as an authentic, welcoming home. We have had all types of weather from sideways wind and rain to a glorious 24 degrees at the beach. Even when the weather is wild the stove makes a very cosy welcome back after adventuring. We have had rabbits in the garden everyday and even seen eagles while out on our travels.

This truly is the most gorgeous of holiday homes - so well thought out and beautifully decorated and so many lovely touches. We have serious house envy. With exquisite scenery on all sides ranging from hilly terrain to lochs and beaches, make the perfect family holiday to Scotland’s wilderness with a stay at The Barn at Reef, situated in Reef, near Ardroil on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides.

Tucked into the side of a south facing hillock, on the shore of Loch Roag, The Barn at Reef is a beautifully restored former byre, where care has been taken to create a décor that resonates with the wild and remote surroundings, offering all the home comforts needed to make your stay enjoyable through the use of contemporary furnishings and artefacts which are inspired by the islands and local culture. A perfect mix of traditional and quality décor will welcome you into a beautifully furnished sitting/dining room with a flavour of the wilderness of Scotland mixed in with comfort, why not have your morning coffee at the dining table provided or recline on one of the sofas and plan what adventures your day will hold whilst warming your feet beside the woodburning stove? When lunchtime approaches, a contemporary kitchen fulfils your culinary needs with amenities to help you feel at home, plus double doors opening onto a decking area, perfect for relaxing with a glass of your favourite beverage.

There are skylights throughout the house, and the king-size bedroom is no exception, with the wooden flooring and grey and brown interior themes continued into this wonderful space, with a sofa available for extra relaxation; upon entering the double bedroom, you will see the fresh décor continuing, and a delightful box bed. If you need to warm up after a long day of walking in the hills, a walk-in shower will soak the Hebridean chill away.

Outside, a delightful wooden decking area offers furniture to recline in, with a large, enclosed lawn for your four-legged friends to enjoy.

When adventures call, indulge in the scenery as you venture into the Uig Hills for a hike amongst the rugged scenery.

The wildlife here is simply amazing, with so much to see across the island, including eagles and red deer.

A multitude of sandy beaches are at your disposal, including Riof or Reef beach, where you can take in the seaside air and white sand through a walk, watersports or even try out wild swimming.

Ardroil offers bars, restaurants and a local shop however, where you will be able to enjoy a hot meal or stock up on essentials before heading out to the more remote areas of the island, and if you are searching for something more local, fresh seafood is available from the nearby harbour at Miavaig.

Further afield is Great Bernera where you can visit the local iron age museum to sample a taste of the rich history of the island.

With stunning beaches and hillside hikes, your holiday to The Barn at Reef will be one to remember.

The islands can be reached by flights from Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness; or by ferry from Uig on Skye to Tarbert, or Ullapool to Stornoway.
