  • "A beautiful cottage, in a peaceful setting, well equipped with comfy beds and quality bedding provided."

This is a lovely base in walking distance of the beach and within reach of some other hidden gems. There is everything you need here and the place was spotless when we arrived. The welcome pack of tea/coffee/milk and biscuits was also a lovely touch. Fluffy towels were provided, we always take our own as hubby has allergies to certain detergents, but its great that these were also good quality. We would definitely recommend staying here and would like to thank the owners for sharing it with us, a quiet break away from it all was exactly what we needed.

  • "We were so glad to have found West Croft, up there with some of the best we have rented in the last thirty years."

West Croft sits in a quiet and peacefully private setting. The bungalow itself has everything you need to enjoy a self catering holiday. It has comfortable beds and sofas. The kitchen is well equipped with all the equipment you need. Plenty of seats for more than six people to eat in, although there were only two of us. It was spotlessly clean. There are beautiful views from the front windows towards the Lakeland fells. It was great to watch the weather rolling in. The beach is not too far away, and Mawbray Banks are very interesting to walk along. With lots to discover if you are interested in wildlife. We spotted lots of different things. The local gastro pub is only a short stroll away, with a nice children’s play area opposite. Very tasty food and well worth a visit. There was a welcome pack waiting for us on arrival, including tea, coffee, milk and biscuits. Plus there were dish washer tablets, soap, and other cleaning products. We contacted the owner a couple of times while staying. She was so kind, friendly, and patient with us. We would love a return visit. Five stars from us!!

We found the directions to the bungalow, when we reached the village, a bit confusing, not knowing which patch of grass was the “village green”. Perhaps somewhere in the information, it could be stated that the freezer is in the garage.

It has everything you need for a ‘home from home’ holiday, and is in a great location for exploring the surrounding area. The views from the property are terrific, and the property is well equipped and spotlessly clean. It’s located very close to the beach with views across to Scotland and is perfect for walking or just wandering the shoreline looking for treasure! We recommend walking down the coastline to the Allonby Tea Rooms for lunch (worth booking, as they get busy) or finish your day at the local community owned pub, The Lowther Arms, for superbly cooked meals with a very warm welcome. Worth noting great options for veggies and vegans at both places. Can’t think of a nicer place to base yourself to recharge and unwind, we didn’t want to leave!

Upon arrival ( we were an hour early) the family were cleaning the property and made us feel welcome by making us tea and providing water for the dogs after a long journey. The Bungalow was extremely spacious, clean, well presented and in a great location for our needs. It is well stocked with kitchen equipment and the panoramic views of the countryside are a delight to wake up to. The property is very close to the beach too which the dogs loved. Close to Silloth for a short drive to get fish and chips, Whitehaven, Maryport and Workington & Carlisle. We even managed a nice meal at Armathwaite Hall in Keswick. If I was staying on the west coast again I would certainly come back here. I've already recommended this place to one of my friends

The facilities at West Croft were very good, kitchen was well stocked with everything you could possibly think of, the milk in the fridge was a nice touch, and welcome tray also, we did bring some things with us, and just topped up sugar and coffee jars when we left. The cottage was very clean, and very hot when the heating came on, I had to turn down radiators as was to hot, the shower was lovely and quite powerful and the bath quite long, I'm only 5ft 1 and could just about touch end with tiptoes haha. An eclectic mix of old and new but very comfortable and well equipped. Mawbray village is also lovely; the community pub does terrific food and the locals are very welcoming. The only downside was not having anywhere secure (at the cottage) to let the dogs off lead. This wasn't a huge problem for us as the beach is only a short walk away and public footpaths criss cross the fields so lots of places to walk but the path around the back of the cottage does not really constitute a secure area for dogs. The bungalow is also situated on national cycle route 72 or Hadrian's Cycleway which is great for cycling enthusiasts.

The village of Allonby also offers a heated indoor swimming pool at the local leisure centre.

Maryport was the site of a Roman port and many of the Roman remains are housed in the Senhouse Roman Museum.

About the location

MAWBRAY

Allonby 2.5 miles; Silloth 5 miles; Maryport 8 miles.

Mawbray is a small village on the west coast of Cumbria on the Solway Plain. It is approximately halfway between the coastal towns of Silloth and Maryport. From Mawbray Banks the views towards Skiddaw and northwest towards Criffel in Dumfriesshire are magnificent. Mawbray means maiden’s castle or stronghold and holds reference to the strong Roman links with this area. The nearby seaside resort of Allonby sits along a five mile crescent shaped bay on the Solway Firth, offering a clean shingle beach, sand dunes and a wide green promenade. The flat terrain is ideal for walkers of all ages and for dogs, and is also popular with windsurfers and kite flyers. The area is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has kept much of its Georgian and Victorian charm, with cobbled lanes, curious corners to explore and several splendid buildings, one of which is The Baths, an imposing colonnaded building. The Cumbria Coastal Walk and Allerdale Ramble are nearby, or why not enjoy a round of golf at one of the two courses nearby, plus visit the town of Maryport, which has an award-winning coastal aquarium and maritime and Roman museums.
