  • "Fab cottage very comfortable /cosy and well equipped!"

The only comment or negative thing to mention is the drainage from the shower and basin in this bathroom is very slow to drain and the floor floods easily from the shower because of the slow drainage ! Thanks for another great stay

  • "Scatter cushions on sofa flat, need replacement."

Only double beds, no king or super king beds. Televisions’ screen quality not great, clearly dated screens. Tv glitchy and pixelated frequently. Given the price of the rental then better screens and replacing double beds with king or super kings would make a huge difference.Otherwise property well equipped. Times on bathroom towel heaters way out. Red hot in middle of night (towel heater). Sinks and showers in bathrooms draining very slowly. Probably need cleaning out ? Blocked??? Oven good. Cooker hob good. Very noisy when raining in attic bedrooms.

  • "We had a beautiful week’s stay at Bowman Cottage, super spacious and comfortable with all appliances you would need for a week away."

Slightly disappointed that when we arrived all three TV’s weren’t working and we had to wait 4 days for it to be fixed, this wouldn’t be a problem if the weather was better but we spent a lot of time in the cottage.

  • "Loved our week at Bowman."

Very central, yet quiet. Decorated beautifully. Bath and shower were ideal after a cold or wet day on the fells. Parking was always available. We will return.

  • "We really liked the cottage generally."

Having good quality crockery, cups, glasses etc was such a lovely touch after staying in many places with catering standard things. The boot drying cupboard was a fabulous idea, and well used given the amount of rain we had during our week. Having this right by the back door would have made it perfect to come in the back, take off all wet things and go into the rest of the house dry. However, the lack of a working back door key made us have to walk through the house carrying dripping wet clothes and boots. We asked the agents twice for a key. We were given a replacement once, but when this didn’t work nothing further was done. Slightly frustrating… Bowman Cottage was very comfortable, and a lovely home away from home, but please don’t give out keys that don’t work. The parking permits were marvellous, and very refreshing to have more than one, especially the car park permit as well - extremely thoughtful of the owners - thank you!

  • "Bowman Cottage provides brilliant accommodation close to the centre of Ambleside close to all the shops, restaurants and bars but is still in a quiet street."

The fixtures and fittings within the premises are all high quality and the interior is well decorated. This is our third visit to this house and we will definitely return again. Highly recommended

  • "Bowman cottage is a lovely place to stay in Ambleside."

Its been renovated to a high standard, has easy parking given the location and is a stone's throw from everything you need from the town. A few things to be aware of: The wifi is slow - barely getting 1mbps - so only web browsing is possible. No catch-up services or streaming. The house backs-on to the 'Tap Yard' pub, so expect live music on the weekends (stops ~11pm) and the smell of their woodfired pizza oven will wafted in if the rear windows are open. You are very central to the town which has its pros/cons.

Thank you for your feedback. We will check the wifi to see if there are any problems with it and the listing to ensure it is up-to-date. We are glad that you found the property to your liking. Heart of the Lakes Owner Relations Property Owner

  • "We have visited Bowman Cottage several times and have always loved it."

It’s cosy, comfortable and well located. The cottage is in better condition than on our last visit with some new furniture and a lick of paint on the walls as well as a new and very effective central heating system. I suspect a lot of maintenance was put on hold by the pandemic, but Bowman is shipshape again. Our only complaint about this gorgeous cottage is that in an area of the country with very poor mobile phone coverage, the exceptionally bad Wi-Fi was a real problem. We struggled even to look up opening hours for the odd local attraction. We managed to get the iplayer to work once in a whole week. I don’t know if there were problems locally or whether the router needs an upgrade. The other point is that the service provided by Heart of the Lakes now that they are part of Sykes is much poorer than in the good, old days. Asking politely for the customary second set of keys, for example, I was made to feel as if I was being incredibly demanding and difficult. We would not hesitate to recommend Bowman Cottage but sadly Sykes are perennially disappointing.

Thank you for your comments. We are pleased to read that you had an enjoyable stay at Bowman Cottage. We take all comments on board. Thank you. Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage in Central Ambleside - quiet and felt peaceful."

Cottage is clean and bathrooms high standard. The log burner in lounge is not functional. This was disappointing as this is the room with the comfy chairs and it would have been lovely to sit in there with it on. The log burner in the kitchen works and we mostly sat there around kitchen table. Kitchen has plenty of equipment for cooking if wanted to. Could do with some more glassess as not enough if had 6 people staying. Overall would recommend this cottage.

Location in centre of Ambleside meant we were able to access great walking and cycling from door - only used car one day during our weeks stay. Really appreciate the secure bike shed. Have stayed in this cottage before and will certainly book again. Thank you.

  • "When I arrived, I was told that there was no on-street parking permit but it was being delivered by 1st class post."

That was clearly not the case because it never arrived! At the end of a 4.5 hour drive, with the main town car park full and people queuing, that is not what anybody wants. I tried to phone the HoftheL office only to find that I was talking to someone from Sykes Cottages in some other part of the UK. Basically, they couldn't care less about the parking permit even though it is supposed to be part of the package. Sykes are now too big and control too much of the holiday property market. Also, if you haven't been to Ambleside for a couple of years, you need to understand that it is now completely overcrowded. It is no longer the lakeland town for walkers and climbers.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
