  • "Poppy's Cottage was in the centre of Grasmere and very convenient for the frequent buses to local towns and walking to restaurants etc."

Nearby co-op for stocking up. The cottage is well equipped and very comfortable. The second bedroom is small for a double but there is storage on landing outside. TV channels limited - didn't seem to have full freeview but that may be a locality issue. Would be more of an issue on dark or rainy nights. Very clean and well looked after. Would recommend and go back ourselves.

  • "Difficult to say how it could be improved."

The house was immaculate and very clean. Just had a little difficulty working the microwave but I think we got the hang of it eventually. Location was perfect and seriously looking to visit again next year. Not a problem but couldn't get the TV to work. I think the remote controls needed new batteries but it didn't bother us - we aren't TV addicts. Otherwise I would recommend it to anyone - coming back.

Thank you so much for your kind words about the cottage; they are always lovely to hear. We are sorry that you didn't manage to work the TV. We have checked it at changeover and with our current guests and it is working fine. Please do come back and visit the cottage again. Property Owner

The location is perfect for exploring the Lake District, whether on foot, or by car. The village of Grasmere is beautiful and has lots of lovely places to eat and we did several walks from the accommodation, which could all be varied to suit ability/duration. The standard within the accommodation is very high and everything has been thought through to enable you to have a comfortable and enjoyable stay. We would definitely recommend Poppy's Cottage and hope to return very soon!

  • "Very good location."

Lovely decor, well maintained. Excellent quality furniture - “Ercol” bedside tables for instance. Loved every minute of our week there. Kitchen needs a wall cupboard or more shelves for storage of food eg cans, drinks, crisps etc that don’t require refrigeration but are otherwise taking up work surface and can be sometimes in the sun. Another key would be very useful not just for when people go out in different directions but for easy access to rear yard and bins without having to keep taking it from front door . Key safe a little difficult to operate Overall a great place

It’s in a fantastic location and the cottage itself is nice and cosy with everything you need. Our only niggle was that the floors, kitchen counters and a few other surfaces weren’t quite as clean as we’d hoped when we arrived. It didn’t feel as though any extra cleaning measures had been put in place under the current circumstances. Other than that everything else was perfect!

We were a little apprehensive about going anywhere due to Covid but the cottage and everything in it was absolutely spotless so we felt relaxed and reassured. We were also very appreciative of the advice produced by Sykes before the holiday and a reminder of the things we should take in the light of Covid. We love this cottage and feel completely at home here. The attention to detail is fantastic. We didn't want to venture into pubs and restaurants so we were fairly self sufficient. However we did order some very nice sour dough pizzas on our first night which were delivered from Ambleside and on our last night we had an amazing take away meal from 'The Jumble Room' in Grasmere. As usual we didn't have to use the car as there are so many walks from the centre of Grasmere. We will definitely be back!

  • "We originally booked this cottage for us and two friends but then had to change our plans."

We rebooked Pollys Cottage for just ourselves on a different date. We were very glad we did as I’m not sure the friendship would have lasted the week. Although very comfortable we felt it was too small for two couples. With two cars the cost of parking would have been a bone of contention as there was only one parking permit for the cottage. There were no instructions for the microwave (though I found some on the internet). We were asked to make sure we emptied the bin in the kitchen ‘regularly’ but no replacement bag was provided. We try to ensure we recycle as much as possible but the recycling information was very sketchy. We ended up returning home with all our glass and cans as we were unable to find suitable recycling facilities. We enjoyed our week but had we taken our original booking I’m not sure we would have done.

  • "Fabulous cottage in a perfect location."

Just a couple of observations from us (not complaints but we feel they would improve the overall experience of Poppy's Cottage). This was the most expensive cottage we have ever rented in the Lake District so it needs to present itself accordingly please:- 1. Towels - larger bath towels (sheets) would be lovely - the bath towels supplied only just cover the bare necessities so functional but not luxury. I was at fear of exposing myself to my brother-in-law which would have been a pretty scary experience for him :). 2. Kitchen towel (only 1?) and tea towels (2). We like to cook at home when we are away so could have done with a few more towels and tea towels. 3. Very disappointed to have to buy washing tablets and fabric conditioner (none supplied), washing up liquid, toilet cleaner, etc. There were a few dishwasher tablets but we are used to having these items provided and only topping them up if needs be. We are also used to leaving behind anything that we have bought for the next visitor. We took everything that we had purchased home with us on this occasion. It gave the impression that the cottage was all about show and not about providing the ultimate cottage experience. 4. The second bedroom makes use of a storage cupboard on the landing as there is absolutely no space for anything in the room. This in itself is not a huge problem (the photos are deceptive on the size of the room to be honest), however, a light in the cupboard would have been helpful as my sister spent ages with a torch in the cupboard looking for her clothes!! 5. The sofas are not comfortable - after a long day climbing Helvellyn, etc, when you do decide to stay in for an evening it would be have been nice to have comfortable sofas (minimally footstools provided). There were 4 of us so we were somewhat perched which wasn't great. 6. The outside 'laundry/drying' room was a god send - perfect for all of our walking equipment and great to have a heater in there to dry out the wet clothing. 7. TV services were excellent - great to have internet TV with iPlayer, Netflix, etc. Overall, I would give this cottage 9/10 - if the owner just went a little bit further it could so easily be a 10 and we would definitely be back!

  • "A beautiful cottage in lovely Grasmere."

Poppy’s cottage is cosy and comfortable. The decor and furnishings are tasteful and of a high quality. Showers were hot and strong and the kitchen well equipped. The courtyard space looked lovely but unfortunately a week of rain meant we weren’t able to use it ! If we had been able to sit out I don’t think the garden chairs would have been too comfortable for long so it would be nice if some relaxer type chairs were also provided ( they could be stored in the wet room). Poppy’s is located in the heart of Grasmere with many cafes and shops close by so lovely to stroll out (even in the rain) . However it does mean that passers by continually stop to look in and even sit on the outside wall which can get a little annoying. Overall a lovely cottage from which to explore a beautiful part of the UK.

Only 2 minor negatives. Terrible smell in en suite bathroom which we could not get rid of so we didnt use it. And the radiator would not turn down so was unbearably hot. Also, the car park permit system is not ideal. we came from the north and late on so going to Windermere to collect it was not on our agenda. And we would have had to return it on the last day. A real faff. We got round it being in Grasmere at Christmas there was plenty of parking. There needs to be a better system for it. Otherwise a great holiday will probably return again. Thankyou

The owner has renovated Poppy's Cottage to a very high spec indeed and there is everything you could possibly need and then some. Tastefully decorated throughout and having the benefit of 2 bathrooms ( a large family and an en suite). The cottage is very comfortable and has only just been renovated and put on the holiday market so is all shiny and new and far superior to some cottages we have experienced. The TV is also a proper 4k large unit, so we got our evening 'strictly takes 2' fix with Zoe in style. We also had pretty good weather too, not bad for October!. The annex houses the washer/dryer and a thoughtfully placed panel heater and hooks are provided to dry your wet walking gear. There are numerous great walks right from the door and we barely used the car all week....parking was no issue due to the parking permit allowing us to park the car 24/7 in a nearby car park about 100 yards away, you are allowed to unload right outside the door too which is useful. We turned up on the first Friday of the month which is market day, but the stall holders helped us gain access and then we had some nice produce to buy right on the doorstep!. Sykes Cottages who handle this property were superb from start to finish, very helpful and friendly staff making this a lovely holiday experience. We would highly recommend both Sykes and this super Cottage.

The arrangement with the local car-park, the late night Co-op and Lucias made the stay all the more pleasurable. They really did it right - the attention to detail is stunning. Every need has been taken care of from laundry detergent to cookies and tea to ensuite bathrooms. The combination of history and modern conveniences is exactly what I was looking for. I booked late and couldn't believe my luck in finding this wonderful cottage. I had been combing through MANY pictures when I found Poppy's Cottage. It turns out that it had only just come on the market so I just lucked out. This cottage will book up. Upon arrival, I found pamphlets, brochures and maps to help me plan my trip, next to the tea and cookies. The owners were perfect hosts and Sykes Cottage personnel were very helpful. I could not have asked for anything better. The cottage is beautiful, comfortable and perfectly located in the center of town. I was so happy to wake up and come home each day to spend time in this beautiful cottage. I came all the way to the Lake District from California, USA. My trip was everything I had hoped for and more (and I'm fussy). Thank you to Jo and Andrew for making one of my bucket list trips a dream come true.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family have been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century and Grasmere Lake, plus Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland Wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance.
