  • "A really cosy and homely cottage with plenty of hot water for baths at the end of a long walk."

Great location for walking without having to drive. We did five brilliant all-day walks from the cottage door. The outdoor seating area looks out on to the river and we were visited by different varieties of birds at dusk. We will definitely come again.

  • "The house is in a lovely area, with a lot of places to go for a walk or cityvisits."

Nearby Snowdonia National Park (within a hour drive). There's is enough space in the house to stay with four adults. We were with the two of us. When we arrived it seems that the cleaner had to leave the house in a hurry. All the cleaning-materials were in the livingroom (??). We had a few problems with internet and heating the first day. It was impossible to reach the owner by phone. And she even didn't react on my textmessage. When I phoned the other number of a man "who knows almost everything of the house". He said he only was a keyholder. The heatingsystem (with a Nest thermostat) turned almost every hour back to a low temperature, which made it less comfortable in the evenings. The kitchen was complete with all you need for a longer stay with preparting your own food. We finally found the glasworks in the smaller livingroom. The fact that we were unable to open the frontdoor, wasn't a problem for us. We only used the backdoor. ;)

We had difficulty with the mortise lock on the front door, only being able to unlock it from the outside. The use of the z-bed, was really useful - thank you.

Thank you for the constructive feedback re the front door mortise lock . I am aware that this is rather stiff and am looking to give it some attention on my next visit . Pleased you had a good visit to this lovely area. Property Owner

It is a welcoming home, rather than the sterile surroundings holiday lets can often be. The location is beautifully rural with a pretty garden which has a view of forested hills beyond. There are great walks to enjoy from the doorstep. The house is well equipped to thoroughly take advantage of self-catering and is comfortable and cosy to enjoy evenings in. We had such a brilliant time and hope we may be able to return in the future. Thank you

Sorry I missed responding to this feedback from last October I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay at Swn y coed When I decided to change my Aunt s home into a holiday let for economic reasons I wanted to retain the homely atmosphere as far as possible Hopefully I have achieved that Property Owner

We had an excellent holiday. The property had all the required utilities. The location was amazing and we enjoyed the stay. There are plenty of places to explore in the Llangollen area. Couple of minor observations: 1. The bathroom door knob was quiet tough to open from inside 2. The rod holding the shower head might need to be looked at as it was but wobbly.

Thank you for your comments re Swn y coed and pleased you had a good holiday and enjoyed the house as well I am aware of the bathroom door and have a new handle to replace that as it is stiff My problem has been finding the time when the local carpenter can come in and fit between let’s ! I will look at shower rod when next there . Property Owner

The cottage is cosy and well equipped and the views over the River Dee are amazing. We went walking down the lanes, visited Plas Newydd House, very interesting and well worth a visit with a lovely Tea Room on site that served lovely lunches, snacks or Afternoon Tea and a walk along the stream, we visited Chirk Castle, another lovely place to visit and a courtesy bus takes you up to the castle from the car park if you need it, we visited Rhugg Farm Shop, lovely selection of goods and goodies. We were not too far away for days out to Betws-y-Coed, Bala Lake and Llandudno, also all worth a visit. There are lots of eating places and shops in LLangollen approx., 10 minutes away. There is an Aldi Supermarket just this side of Llangollen which provides for all of your requirements. The Berwyn Arms is at the top of the village and turn right, lovely atmosphere and food. The parking is on street but both times we have visited we have never had a problem parking as there has always been plenty of space. We will certainly book a return visit.

  • "This cottage has to be one of the best that we have stayed in."

Everything was immaculate and for the self caterers amongst us could not be faulted. The views from the back of the cottage were amazing, helped of course by the wonderful weather. Our only problem was that when we arrived we were expecting someone to be there to let us into the cottage and it was locked. Fortunately a very friendly neighbour came to the rescue allowing us to use her phone to speak to the office who explained where the key to the house was located. We would certainly recommend this cottage.

So pleased to receive such a positive report with credit to my Housekeeper who does her best to keep the house as welcoming as we can. It certainly is situated in a lovely area of North Wales . The owner would live there if she could ! Thank you for the feedback which supports several I have received in my Visitors book Property Owner

  • "We enjoyed this cottage a lot once we had settled in and it was very good value for having a room each (2 of us)."

There was a huge amount of books, games etc, which we hardly used as the weather was so good. Unfortunately, we couldn't find a 'users guide' to the cottage and had to work our way through manufacturer's information. We couldn't find anything about the nest thermostat so we got the heating working to our satisfaction by trial and error and some advice by an engineer who came to check the boiler. It was colder inside than outside when we arrived, and the bathroom floor was extremely wet and we had to dry it- not a great start Good things were lots of space- and storage space. Big comfortable lounge and pretty garden. Good kitchen, plenty of space in freezer/fridge

  • "The cottage was very well equipped with everything you could need and we loved the vintage feel throughout - with one exception, the double bedroom at the front of the cottage which due to it position looked out onto the lane and unfortunately just provided a view of our car."

This was not a problem in itself but the room was totally out of keeping with the rest of the house and as two couples one would definitely draw the short straw as the room at the back of the house was lovely with views over the glorious countryside (A5 aside - which wasn't a problem except on the Sunday when it appeared to be used as race track for motorcycles). The room is small and lacked anywhere to hang clothes so we had to live out of our bags all week, the spare fold away bed in the corner (could have been stored in the locked attic room?) added to the 'spare/forgotten room' feel so felt like we were back in our old student house. It needs blinds for privacy during the day and a black out curtain to shut out the light of the street lamp outside at night, replacing the MDF chest of drawers with something more in keeping and adding a small wardrobe in the recess would greatly help. We were unfortunate in that the house next door is undergoing some restoration so most mornings when we were having breakfast tin the (lovely) garden the sound of power tools and hammers forced us back indoors. If you don't mind driving out to the surrounding area to eat out etc, it is in a good location and you have nice walks from the door. the surrounding countryside and the spectacular River Dee makes it one of the prettiest parts of Wales. Bonus of Aldi a few miles down the road if you want to stock up on provisions.

Also, Ron is an extremely helpful and kind person - thus making the stay extra special. Thank you!

  • "A wonderful cottage, much better than we were expecting."

Everything we needed and more! Clean and comfortable, with a beautiful garden. The garden probably isn't suitable for young children/those with mobility problems (there is a steep drop off at the end of the garden) Lots of lovely walks you can do from the front door. Might be worth highlighting on a cupboard door that the glasses are stored in the 'snug' area as we missed that initially. When we arrived there was a letter informing us there would be a powercut on one full day. This wasn't a problem as we were out for the day, but if someone that was staying had a medical condition, for example, it might have been something they'd need to be made aware of in advance. A quick call or text before the stay could have informed us. Wifi worked perfectly. Would have preferred twin beds in one of the rooms or a larger king size bed. The general peace of the area was much appreciated, all we could hear were the sheep in the nearby field. It was nice to be able to walk through the orchard to the river, although we were a bit anxious that people were wondering what we were doing when walking though! We had our own maps with us, but were missing the one covering the area above Llangollen. Having some OS maps for cottage visitors to borrow might be a nice touch? Chip shop in Corwen was excellent, phoned our order through and picked up at the door, well organised for Covid-19 distancing. Thanks for a great stay.

  • "I have been with Sykes previous and their properties have been good value."

However, this property was not up to scratch. The bathroom toilet was broken, and the old boiler system was a nuisance if you wanted hot water or central heating. The second bedroom was very shabby and the spare spring bed would be a joke if you needed it because there is nowhere to put it. Outside, the views are stunning, but there is nowhere to sit and enjoy them because the seating was all broken. The kitchen was just full of old cutlery and appliances. The house has much potential, but the owner should really invest some time and money into it. We stayed in August peak season and paid premium for the property. Sorry, but I expected a little bit more than what we got.

Many thanks for your feedback. Guests do love our vintage style character property with wonderful views. The property sleeps 4 with two double beds and we provide a Z bed as an extra for a child if needed. We have now replaced the garden furniture with a new table and chairs for four guests. The combi boiler does take a minute for the hot water to run through but is very efficient. however, we do appreciate that not everybody is used to a combi boiler Property Owner

  • "Although we enjoyed our stay at Swn Y Coed there were a couple of things that we felt needed to be improved upon."

The lounge furniture was very uncomfortable and we felt the lounge looked a bit shabby. There were lots of really old equipment in the kitchen and as we like to cook, we would have preferred using newer equipment. It was rather chilly over our stay and we tried to put the fire on in the dining area but there was no gas left in both bottles, which was a disappointment. On the plus side the property had great facilities, comfortable beds and in a nice quiet location with lovely views. We just felt it needed more attention to detail.

Many thanks for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you felt the sofa was uncomfortable but it was fully reupholstered and recovered in July 2018 when the room was redecorated. We do ask if any guest has an issue during their stay to please call the number in the property and we do our best to resolve any issue for you. The gas bottled could have been changed during your stay if we had been made aware. We provide numerous items in the kitchen that we feel guests may need . Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage in a lovely scenic area."

Very quiet and peaceful. Never saw or heard a soul while we were in. Cottage was clean and cosy. Only odd thing about it was that every drawer and cupboard was filled with years and years worth of 'stuff'. A holiday cottage needs just the basics plus whatever decorative items are left to make the place look and feel nice. You don't really want to see 50 years of someone elses clutter. No holidaymaker is going to use all of the old, mismatched cutlery, crockey, pans and utensils in the kitchen so why not pare it down to one nice set of the essential stuff. Other than that minor observation we had a great stay. Lovely to see all the birds in the garden each morning too.

About the location

GLYNDYFRDWY

Llangollen 4.4 miles; Bala 14 miles.

The small village of Glyndyfrdwy is situated amidst the beautiful Dee Valley, just 4.4 miles from the picturesque town of Llangollen. Situated close to the foothills of the scenic Berwyn Mountains, the village is renowned as the home of Owain Glyndwr where, in 1400, he proclaimed himself Prince of Wales and thus began his 14-year rebellion against the English. Today you can still see Owain's Mount - the eroded remains of a 12th century castle motte, whilst the village itself offers a village pub. Great walking is available with the Offa's Dyke Pathway nearby, whilst canoeing on the River Dee is available for those who enjoy water sports. The nearby town of Llangollen offers a good range of shops, pubs and eateries and is internationally famous for its annual Musical Eisteddfod as well as for white water rafting opportunities. Take a steam train through the picturesque Dee Valley, visit the National Trust properties at Erddig or Chirk Castle or take some time to explore the Clwydian Hills or the delights of Snowdonia National Park.
