  • "Thanks very much for a great stay at Bwthyn Y Wennol!"

The cottage is ideally situated for the Snowdonia National Park. We had great days out, and very cosy returns to the cottage. Proprietress was very supportive with some Victoria Sponge because of our bad luck with Welsh weather (even for Welsh standards). If we'd visit Wales again, we certainly would try Bwthyn Y Wennol again.

  • "Although this cottage is set in a lovely area and in itself is cosy and functional, our main issue was the presence of mice in the property."

On the 3rd morning we found chewed remains of chocolate and on further investigation we found an abundance of mouse droppings behind the microwave and along the work surface in the kitchen. No one was available at the owners property until the evening to provide a solution and on the evening we were horrified to realise that this issue was not going to be dealt with by the cottage owner but instead by ourselves. She handed me 3 mouse traps and turned the conversation to the lovely day out that she had had that day. She did not come to the cottage to make any assessment of the situation on that evening which we consider totally unacceptable, although she did attend the following morning to ask if any had been caught. One of the traps had caught a mouse on that night and also on the following night. We do understand that rural areas may be prone to these issues but consider that the way it was dealt with was not acceptable. Restaurants are closed down if there is a presence of mice. We can only assume that there were mice around for the whole of our stay, and were quite clearly in the cottage as we slept. We will not reserve this cottage again as a result of these findings, and depending on how Sykes Cottages handle our experience, we will consider very carefully whether we book with your company in the future.

The cottage was beautifully apointed, the location was incredible, and the house was very well equipped. This part of Wales has been very special to us for decades, so we were very happy to find what we hope to be a long term location. Peace and quiet and easy access to lots of great hikes. We walked from the cottage door on five out of seven days and slept well as a result, even when it rained. We haven't exhausted the walking possibilties so we may well return. Unlimited hot water, which we had, has always been my choice of a luxury for "Desert Island Discs".

It’s near Nantmor National Trust site with excellent walks. Beddgelert, Porthmadog and Llyn Dinas not too far away. The cottage had everything we needed Including a closed in garden to keep the dogs safe. The cottage warmed up very quickly and was really cosy. We did miss the games and DVD’s as they were removed due to COVID19, but we had a good book to read. We found the cottage a lovely size for the 2 of us and the 2 dogs.

The landlady of the property was very attentive and understanding when we had a problem during our stay and she always asked if we were having a nice time. The kitchen was well equipped and the bedrooms were well appointed. In fact, when we arrived, the whole bungalow was spotless and the porch was a useful addition, as were the torches provided. Cottage was very clean, had excellent wifi connection but no BT mobile signal and the central heating was very efficient warming the property from cold to cosy in a short time. Plenty of drawer space in bedrooms but hanging space a little limited. Adequate kitchen utensils, sufficient pots and pans etc. but could do with some additional glasses and bowls especially if four people using. We found the lounge lighting a little inadequate for reading but the owner kindly supplied an additional lamp which solved the problem. Small welcome gift of bara brith and milk appreciated.

We were warm and comfortable. The surrounding countryside was beautiful with the hills and moutains all around us. The cottage itself was charming and we loved it, the only issues we had were lack of coat hangers and space to put suitcases etc. The kitchen needs looking at carefully and items such as vegetable knife, wooden chopping board needs adding also. A set of weighing scales should be added too, i took my own ( for weighing out dog food). An enjoyable week with some beautiful walks on the local beaches and visits to copper mine.

  • "We had a lovely winter holiday in this cottage, which is well-equipped, comfortable and warm (one reason for choosing it was somone else's past review mentioning what a warm cottage it was - they were right - it's great - and often this is not the case with holiday cottages)."

The pictures don't really do it justice - there is a good porch with coat hooks, shoe/boot rack and a huge selection of tourist information leaflets; this opens into a fairly wide tiled hall / passageway which makes the cottage more spacious than it seems from the pictures. It's very cottagey and homely with a lot of art and ornaments to look at when the cloud comes down and you can't see the lovely views outside. The wifi worked without any fuss (not always the case) and there is an ice-box style freezer compartment within the fridge which I am sure would have been worth mentioning in the description and a useful combi washer/drier as well. The kitchen has everything you could need and is quite spacious too. The cottage is well-located for many excellent walks; the enclosed side garden was useful for the dog and I'm sure it is pretty too in the right season. The owner is right next door but her house is the other side of the big barn, so the cottage feels secluded and it is a beautiful and peaceful spot. I'd consider it again for a winter break.

It is very comfortable, has a great heating system (which was important for a November stay) and every facility we needed. For us it is ideally located at the end of a secluded track, making it very private, quiet and set between the hills, with a great outlook from the lounge to the surrounding pastures. Our host, Gay, met us soon after arrival to ensure everything was okay and then left us to our own devizes. The cottage was spacious and very cosy at all times. We're happy to highly recommend it to anyone seeking a base in North wales.

About the location

Porthmadog 6 miles; Caernarfon 13 miles.

The picturesque village of Beddgelert lies in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park at the foot of Mount Snowdon. Beddgelert is a bustling village with arts and craft shops, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants, centred around the Afon Glaslyn river. A 20 minute stroll along the river will take you to the Aberglaslyn Pass, one of North Wales’ most famous beauty spots. The Welsh Highland Steam Railway passes through the village on its journey from Porthmadog to Caernarfon. Beddgelert is famed for its monument to the Welsh Prince Llewelyn's dog, whom the Prince killed thinking it had attacked and killed his son, only to discover afterwards it had been defending his son from a savage wolf attack. With Porthmadog, Portmeirion, Borth y Gest and the whole of the Llyn Peninsula easily reached, this is an ideal location for a Welsh holiday.
