  • "Field Cottage is a lovely retreat for two."

Well equipped, comfy, cosy and very clean. We stayed here in 2017 when it was new to Sykes and it has been very well maintained by the owners. Well situated for lots of great walks, near to the coast and places to visit. Very peaceful and relaxing surroundings.

Lovely to see you again and glad to hear that the cottage lived up to your previous memories. The weather was better than expected so pleased you got a lot of walking in and had a relaxing time away from it all. Property Owner

A full compliment of kitchen equipment except for a couple of items but this due to utility issues. Everything is to a high standard, and the location and views are excellent. The hosts were very helpful and friendly and were prepared to deal with any issues raised, which they did for me when I had a problem unrelated to the cottage. We will return again. No wall clock so you have to keep checking your phone fir the time. No TV channels which we should have been warned about before we arrived as the antenna had been down for nearly 12 months. It didn't bother us to start with but became very tiresome by the end of our break. Thankfully we had YouTube. If we had been warned we would have brought with us our Netflix and prime passwords. Or dvds. The whistling kettle also became difficult as my wife likes to get up later than me and I didn't want the kettle to boil and waje her up. Apart from these issues which are all simple fixes the accommodation was superb. The owners are lovely and the location is great. We had a great time seeing our grandchildren and the local sights.

You might even see the Barn Owl flying over the field. As the cottage is in a very rural position there was no dishwasher/washer etc due to the delicate electricity supply but we found this a bonus, waiting a few minutes for a kettle to boil is no trouble at all when on a relaxing holiday. • "This is a lovely cottage in a very quiet location."

It is very cosy and clean and well maintained As has been mentioned by other visitors there is no microwave or electric kettle, the kettle provided for use with the electric hob takes ages to boil. whilst I realize that this is beyond the control of the owners I would like to mention that the road to access the cottage is a very long single track with very few passing places. There are a few blind corners and a sharp summit. This resulted in us having a few very scary head on confrontations with lorries and vans during our week and there seems little effort has been made by the local authority to create passing places or cut back bushes on the edge of the road. As a result of this I began to dread using the road and have had to spend my first day back home buffing out the scratches along the side of my car.

It was situated in beautiful surroundings with lovely views, plenty of walks. It was ideal for us having a small dog it couldn't get out of the complex where the cottage was. If I was being really picky there was no microwave and hairdryer, but these things are easily overcome. Would look to coming to Field Cottage again the future.

  • "Very spacious, clean cottage and quiet spot too."

It was certainly larger inside than looked on photos. Good lay out for us lounge/kitchen, then bathroom and bedroom. Meant my hubby didn't wake me when he took dogs out in mornings!!! Easy to get to local beach for early morning exercise for the dogs. We loved Staithes, steep climb down to it and back up but certainly worth the effort.. There is a Fish and chip shop just as come out of Staithes, made for an easy supper. Whitby was very busy, we were blessed with gorgeous weather so lots of people had the same idea to visit as us. We didn't stay as long as hoped as was difficult to get around with dogs. We did fiind a dog friendly hotel for lunch off the beaten track, as googled this but most cafes were busy. Had a visit to Goathland, or Aidensfield as we know it, lovely run there, very pretty, you can get coffee and cake at Scripp's garage!!

The view from the property is excellent and the accommodation is everything you could wish for- clean, comfortable and spacious. We enjoyed sitting outside for our tea on a sunny day. The local pub provides excellent home cooked meals. It is an easy drive to shops and to visit many beautiful east coast resorts or inland to the national park. It is situated in a lovely area and is an ideal base to access many parts of the Yorkshire country side. While the weather was not on our side, the comfort of the cottage was great to return to at the end of each day. The host lived close by and was on hand for any information required. Fiona also left us a little welcome parcel and a bone for our puupy which kept him happy for the 3 days we were there. Hoping to return later in the year!

View from french doors was open fields dipping away, in the late evening you could see the street and house lights across in the distance; while in the field at dusk the view was of the low swooping local Barn Owl out hunting in the field. Amazing. Fiona and David were close by (across the yard) if you needed anything at all. Property was clean and and spacious, we don't have any dogs but previous occupants had stayed there with their dogs and there was no trace of them. Staithes is just a short car ride away and well worth visiting, steep walk down to the harbour but so quaint and picturesque. Good location for visiting the sites of North Yorkshire - travelling across the North Yorkshire Moors for the first time was amazing just watch out for the sheep that roam freely and the pheasants that walk across the road!

We chose the worst week of weather that we've had for years...with the Beast from the East snow and blizzards blowing straight across the fields at us and from Tues we were totally snowed in with deep drifts and the road impassable. But we were warm and there are plenty of books, games and TV to keep you occupied. The owners were helpful and gave us options regarding further occupancy should we still be stuck on Saturday. Field cottage has lots of local public footpaths for keen walkers....unfortunately we couldn't use them for deep snow.....and is in a lovely peaceful spot with stunning views. We would like to go again in better weather.

About the location

STAITHES

Whitby 10 miles.

The charming and sleepy seaside village of Staithes, with its cobbled streets and back alleys, is something of an artist’s dream. Its pretty houses and cottages are clustered around the old harbour and surrounded by high craggy cliffs on three sides, with a sheltered sandy beach set amongst the rocky coastline. The village can claim connections with Captain Cook who was apprenticed to a draper near the harbour. Nowadays, Staithes is a must for anyone visiting the Yorkshire Coast and has a good selection of pubs, shops and tea rooms. Staithes is still home to an RNLI lifeboat station and a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) landing fish, crab and lobster, with boat trips for birdwatching, fishing and even whale watching available. It’s also the location of the popular BBC children’s TV series, Old Jack’s Boat. Staithes has a strong attraction for artists, with an annual Art and Heritage Festival, galleries and artists studios with art courses and workshops regularly on offer. There’s a free Illusion Trail, which guides visitors around the network of ginnels (alleyways), with trail guides available locally. The best views of the town can be enjoyed from the Cleveland Way which runs down the cliff to the sea’s edge. Altogether a superb base for exploring the Yorkshire Coast, visiting the larger resorts of Whitby or Scarborough and enjoying the moorland villages of the North York Moors National Park.
