  • "We enjoyed the stay very much."

The property is very nice and the owner is easy to get in touch with. It could be made clearer that the front door is round the back with a blue door, not the one shown from the front on the Sykes main picture.

Everything and more. The photos for the property do not do it justice - everything you need is there and the cottage is very homely and comfortable. The house was decorated for Christmas so it was lovely and festive during our New Year stay. Could do with a light on the corner of the property by the main road but that might be the responsibility of the other property owners

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Alma House."

The house was well equipped, clean and had comfortable beds. Hot water was plentiful. There was ample parking on the green nearby. Reeth has a lovely friendly vibe with 3 good pubs (The Kings Arms is particularly dog friendly), a shop, post office, bakeries, gift shops and cafes. There are some nice walks from the village, which don't involve too much climbing for the less fit - our 86 year old aunty managed two 4 mile walks. The walk to Marrick Priory along the road and back beside the river was particularly nice.

We are so pleased you were comfortable during your stay at Alma House and hope to welcome you back again soon to lovely Reeth. Thank you. Property Owner

This was actually our third stay at the property (first since Covid!), and the fact that we keep coming back probably says something about how nice it is. The house is super comfortable and always clean and well presented (the complimentary coffee pods and biscuits were much appreciated after a long drive!) We had an issue with one of the appliances but the owner was quick to respond to our query and happy to do whatever she could to help. Perfectly situated for what we had planned, I wouldn't be surprised if we were back at Alma House for stay number 4 in the future.

Thank you so much for your lovely comments, we look forward to welcoming you again soon. Property Owner

  • "Had a fabulous week with friends in this comfortable and spacious old house."

The location is spot on. Didn't use the car all week as there are plenty of wonderful walks from the door, and Reeth village green, shops. pubs, cafes are just a few steps away. There's an honesty box for parking on village green, which was fine with us. Neighbour was friendly, cooker and everything else in cottage worked fine. Beds were comfy and linen was fresh and clean, as were the towels. We brought our own larger bath towels with us. The top floor toilet/plumbing system is a macerator which makes a rumbling noise when in use, but we didn't find that a problem. It was good to have two toilets in the house, and there are 3 wash hand basins which was handy. The facilities, especially bathrooms, are a little old fashioned in parts, but clean and adequate, and I would definitely recommend this cottage and hope to book it again. All in all a very relaxed and happy experience in this spacious old house.

  • "Alma House is really lovely, spacious and comfortable."

Reeth and the surrounding area is just beautiful. A few issues with the house that, for me, makes it a little below expectations of a holiday cottage charging over £1000 per week. 1. My first gripe is the check in time of 5pm. I realise all places are doing this at the moment and using covid and cleaning as an excuse, which is fine if you get there and the place is spotless when you do, sadly this wasn't the case. Yes we had comfortable beds with clean bedding and towels (although the towels are tiny) but dust and cobwebs needed seeing to and there are a number of clothes moths in one bedroom especially. I just think we paid for a day in the cottage which we couldn't use it for it to be clean and while it wasn't horrendous it certainly wasn't perfect, the kitchen cupboards are in need of a good clean especially. 3pm check in would be much nicer and if you are making people leave by 10am and asking them to do half of the cleaners job (stripping and bagging into separate bags all bedding, protectors, towels and kitchen towels) before they go then 3 pm should really be manageable. 2. The cooker! We got there at 5pm on arrival day and at 6pm turned the oven on to warm through a lasagne that had been made at home before our departure. This should have been edible by 7 we thought, but at 8 we were still waiting for it to warm through to the middle. Over the course of the week we tried all of the options on the cooker but none worked very well at all. 3. The Macerator drainage system upstairs is horrendous and super noisy. 4. We were asked to only use the washing machine on a 600 spin. This to me is not acceptable, apparently its something to do with the spin effecting the electrics of the flat below, I'm afraid my opinion on that is if its causing electrical issues the electrics need looking at and it's not the fault of the washing machine or people using it. It would be better to take the washing machine out rather than expecting holiday makers to wash on a spin where a tumble dryer can't be used leaving it taking ages to drip dry and ends up smelling worse than it did before it was washed. On the subject of the grumpy neighbour mentioned in other reviews, we had no issues whatsoever, he was polite and chatted each time we saw him. The parking on the green is just a short walk from the cottage, there is an honesty box for optional payments with a recommendation of £2 for a full day. I had no problem with paying this as it goes towards the upkeep of the beautiful village green. All in all it's a nice house in a lovely area, but I probably wouldn't rush to book it again. We had left our dogs at home, so the lack of outdoor space wasn't a problem for us, but I personally wouldn't recommend it for people taking dogs with them even though it is a dog friendly place.

  • "The house was fine but there a few issues we would like to point out for others booking this accommodation: 1."

Although the house is dog friendly there is no garden or secure area for the dogs; 2. As pointed out, there is only parking for loading and unloading but it wasn’t pointed out there is a £2 daily charge to park on the village green; 3. The road next to the house is busy and noisy, especially when the windows are open; 4. As mentioned in previous reviews, there is an unpleasant, unfriendly neighbour which we really didn’t need on our holiday.

The house is very comfortable however it was not clear there was no central heating. The storage heaters were very welcome and heated the hall area well, the bedrooms and mostly the living/ dining room could benefit with a suitable heater. The house sleeps six people and generally the kitchen equipment was suitable but the cooking utensils could do with being upgraded and provision of flat baking trays would be beneficial. All this being said we had a marvellous week and enjoyed our stay in Alma House.

  • "We had a very enjoyable holiday."

Alma House is well appointed, spacious and comfortable. We visit Reeth annually in late autumn when the weather is generally cold and often wet ( this year was an exception) so warmth and drying of outdoor clothing is a priority. The individual heaters at Alma House (especially the two storage heaters) are efficient but connection of the existing central heating system would work better for guests, particularly in the afternoon/evening, at this time of year.

About the location

REETH

Leyburn 8 miles; Richmond 11 miles; Barnard Castle 15 miles; Kirkby Stephen 22 miles.

The pretty, ever-popular village of Reeth rests at the northern tip of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, where Arkengarthdale and Swaledale meet, nestled between Calver Hill, Fremington Edge and Harkerside. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with lovely rolling hills and spectacular views, Reeth boasts a colourful history as it was originally a Saxon settlement, and has also been known as a lead mining town and a centre for hand knitting throughout its time. Both trades are proudly featured in the Swaledale Museum, located alongside a good range of shops, tea rooms and restaurants. For a quaint little community, Reeth is well-served by traditional inns, with three to choose from, including the lovely Buck Hotel, whitewashed like so many of the 18th century cottages huddled around the triangular village green. The historic market towns of Richmond and Leyburn are also within easy reach, offering a further selection of amenities. Askrigg is just a short drive away, as well as Aysgarth Falls, Semerwater and Hardraw Force (England's highest single drop waterfall at 99ft). Reeth offers a fantastic base for exploring North Yorkshire's beautiful, sweeping countryside, whether you choose to discover the caves, cliffs, waterfalls or the plethora of walking and cycling routes that circle this vibrant and varied landscape.
