  • "Due to a cancellation the owners of Rock Mill generously offered us an upgrade so our review is based on Newton Retreat."

The house was very well equipped clean and comfortable and Jeremy the owner helpful and friendly, in a lovely position with views over the fields where we saw hares and deer. Sykes however had not informed the hosts that were arriving a day late even though I had been assured when booking they would do and I even sent a reminder email; no reply. The hosts were concerned and messaged me to see if we were alright.

  • "Fantastic experience @ Rock Mill Cottage."

Excellent facilities and so comfortable. Really loved the log burner and had it on all the time we were in during the evenings. Logs provided in rear shed so only kindling to buy. Lovely welcome and pack from owner Jeremy upon arrival. Extremely attentive and encouraged us to enquire about anything. Great location for exploring this beautiful part of England and the world. Can’t wait to stay here again.

So peaceful! Plenty of outside space to the front and rear of the property as well as a large grassed area to the front. The location is perfect for exploring all of the local sights. Comfortable beds and everything you could need in the property including a basket of goodies on arrival. Owners are helpful and friendly should you need them.

  • "We’ve had a lovely few days at Rock Mill Cottage."

The cottage was well appointed and comfortable and a great base to explore the beautiful countryside. Low Newton by the Sea has a beautiful beach and is only a five minute drive away. The bed in the master bedroom isn’t ideal for anyone over about 5ft 8 though due to the style of bed - it has a foot board at the bottom - that’s the only thing I would change.

  • "Very well equipped, with more supplies than we expected (eg dishwasher tablets, aluminium foil, etc)."

Wood for the stove was also appreciated. Only complaint - bed was a little uncomfortable particularly for me as I am 6ft 2in tall and my feet were against the base board.

It is perfectly situated for access to the gorgeous villages and beaches of Northumberland and close to Alnwick too for access to a larger range of shops etc. The cottage itself is extremely comfortable with everything you would expect or need. The owners live on the same site and were very friendly and helpful. There are 2 other holiday properties there as well and plenty of space to accommodate all.

Our only problem was that the cottage was not that easy to find. We arrived in the dark and there was no sign at the end of the lane to direct us. There was a pole for the sign but no sign of the name of the property on it!

The pretty village of Embleton is ideally placed for exploring one of the most attractive stretches of Northumberland's Heritage Coastline. A beautiful grassy path runs from the village to neighbouring Craster, alongside the sea and past Dunstanburgh Castle - the largest ruined castle in Northumberland. Embleton itself has a village pub and a local hotel, and there is an excellent range of amenities in nearby Alnwick. The gardens at nearby Howick Hall are open during the summer and are noted for their beauty, whilst Alnwick Castle and Garden are a 'must-see' when visiting the area.
