  • "We had a delightful stay at the Coach House - very handy for touring in the Eastern Scottish Borders (Berwickshire Area) and the South East of Scotland & North East of England coastline towns & villages."

Good facilities throughout and well kitted out - everything you need in the kitchen, besides the fridge there is freezer, dishwasher and washing machine - so great scope for longer stays (we stayed one week). A couple of points to note: the bath is very high (not so good for the elderly) and there is no grab rail once in the bath (again, not so good for the elderly) - I'm nearly 75 so I'm offering my experience. Having said that, my wife and I had a lovely time at this cosy holiday let. I recommend this cottage but warn less fit people of the difficulties in getting in and out of the bath and staying safe whilst showering. Maybe the owners will add a grab rail sometime soon which would go a long way to overcoming such difficulties. The owners were great and kindly and were on hand to sort out any problems should any have arisen. I would, despite my difficulties, stay here again in the future.

  • "What a wonderful property, so clean and comfortable, the giant sized bed made sleeping a great experience."

The property was in the middle of open country side so we had our folding bikes with us, the roads were mostly very quiet country farm ways made cycling a real pleasure. Our court yard house was away from the other staying people which suited us as we enjoy our own company by not having to mix with others.

It was very charming and comfortable and provided all what was required for a relaxing holiday stay. The outdoor seating area gave us the opportunity to savour the delights of the many visiting birds. The welcome pack was very thoughtful and appreciated. Thank you.

The property and surroundings are beautiful and made for some lovely mornings/evenings watching and listening to the birds. The owners were very good, respectful of our privacy but close by in case of any need. Great location for exploring the area and we would love to return sometime!

  • "The location was good and the place was quite well equipped."

But on our third evening we found a large (4 inch) live slug in the property. This event prompted us to make a close inspection of the property and it was FILTHY. Almost every window had thick cobwebs and dead insects, in places the dust was so thick you could write in it. There were dead and live insects in the bedroom and black mould in the bathroom. The whole place was DISGUSTING! So much so that we decided to leave the next morning cutting short our holiday by 3 days. After all, if a 4 inch slug can get in what else could? I WOULD NOT STAY IN THIS PLACE AGAIN IF I WAS PAID.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know your thoughts. I am surprised to hear these comments as myself and my husband were on hand throughout your stay and we checked in periodically to make sure you were happy and had everything you needed. Our property is cleaned and managed by a very reputable team for a number of years and as previous guests mentioned it has always been a pleasant and positive experience. As the property is in a rural area, it is possible if a door or windown is left open that wildlife may find its way into the property, its the nature of the surrounding and location. I am sorry to hear that you felt you had no option but to leave, however had you made us aware that these were your intentions we would have looked at some suitable alternatives. Property Owner

The property was superb, just what we expected. It made a really good base for our stay in the Borders. It was a great pity that there are restrictions in place which limited much of what we would have liked to do.

  • "There is a big difference between a country cottage having "character" or looking past the facade and being not very clean."

It seems that after our release from a long lockdown across the UK some businesses have taken the time out to freshen, spruce, general tidy up of premises, not seems to be the case at the Coach House. Would suggest replacing light bulbs which are out, getting a toilet seat that fits the toilet bowl. Dust around the windows inside and cleaning windows outside and inside. There is no glass recycling and the instruction booklet suggested taking glass recycling home. Might be worth giving location of glass recycling points which we found nearby. A good base for exploring the Scottish Borders.

It was reasonably well equipped, we were pleased to find a washing machine and dishwasher there. The owners were very helpful and in no way intrusive. The sat nav doesn't take you there if you put the postcode in, it's about 1/4 a mile off! So be aware. We had a very pleasant week

Very relaxing and comfortable, the cottage was spacious and cosy. Great walks from the cottage, and within easy distance Edinburgh, Berwick-on-Tweed and St Abbs Head are all well worth a visit The close by market town of Duns was a little gem-nice cafes, shops and a museum celebrating the success of local world motor racing champion Jim Clark. We used the Coach house as a base to visit houses and gardens and seaside towns. Even under the present circumstances (coronavirus) we still found places to visit, cafés to get a drink or food safely, with track and trace in evidence everywhere and with most people observing the social distancing rules.

The owners are delightful people and cannot do enough to make our stay a happy time. It’s in a great location for places in Scotland and England. Can be slightly difficult to find using sat nav, but there are signposts pointing towards the properties. Our only negative was that the weather being cold we would have liked the bedroom and bathroom to be a little warmer. There was a great selection of books available. I got through 3 Don Camilo books. TV reception is excellent and a good number of channels are available. Wi fi is pretty good! The wood burning stove is nice and wood was supplied. It makes the living room toasty warm! We would have no hesitation in coming back here again, this being our second visit here.

We wanted a quiet peaceful corner to recharge from our hectic work life and the coach house was perfect. Ideally situated for jaunts out to the coast and further into Scotland. We stayed early February and ventured out late one evening to listen to the owls and watch the stars, as the temps dropped we got back inside to the cosy log burner. Would love to visit again, highly recommend it.

We were greeted by our friendly and helpful host, who had provided milk and luxury cookies. The apartment felt like our own corner of a country house, simply and stylishly presented. By day, we enjoyed hill walking and quiet beaches. Late November, so it was dark soon after four... The Coach House includes an unexpected and welcome bonus. Guests have a choice of holiday reading. On one bookcase, there's an impressive selection of vintage crime. The other is dedicated to current and recent books. Curled up by the woodburner... Perfect...

  • "The Coach House was part of a building that had a central courtyard that was charming."

Although there were two steps to access the property the accommodation was all on one floor with no steps inside and the rooms were spacious and not cluttered so it makes a good holiday for people, like me, with mobility needs. It was extremely well fitted out with both dish washer and washer/dryer plus standards like micro wave oven, toaster and DVD player. Liz and Mike were also very helpful, assisting me to unpack my vehicle, arranging for somewhere undercover to park my mobility scooter overnight and charge it. They also sorted any and all queries, or issues I had during my stay. The area is very good for a number of differing reasons, historic, walking, within reasonable distance of Edinburgh, Hadrian’s Wall and other places. The local town of Berwick also has a lot to interest, besides Ye Olde Superstore Morrisons, the town walls, castle (remains of), battlements and buildings. I spent several days there and still did not cover all I wanted to see. A gem I found was The Union Chain Bridge, the oldest suspension bridge still in use in Europe, however, despite its antiquity and historic value very few people seemed to know of its existence and it had few visitors. I loved my holiday, if I come back to the area I will certainly see if The Coach House is available.

Some of the pans were missing in the cottage and we had to ask the owner if she could get us some more (Which she did quite promptly) And the windows of the cottage were quite dirty too and had obviously not been cleaned in quite some time. We also had to ask what the WiFi code was too because this was not apparent in the cottage. I know these are quite small problems but they stopped me from giving the cottage a better review.

The village of Chirnside occupies an elevated position overlooking the River Whiteadder and offers stunning views across the magnificent Cheviot and Lammermuir Hills.
