  • "York House is in a great position for a first visit to Northumberland."

We manage to pop to Bamburgh Castle, the Craft centre Coldstream the museum , Berwick upon tweed and Craigside the National trust property with a pleasant house and large grounds. If you look at google maps any area you see with good sandy beaches live up to if not exceed your expectations. The house itself is clean, comfortable and well equipped. Wooler has a bakery which is very convinient for picknicks and the holiday tradition of ignoring diets. I can recomend the steak pies. If you have never had battered fish cooked in dripping pop to Seahouses one portion with some chips is enough for 2 people. We were very fortunate with the weather and the information provided in the package at the house is great. Very happy holiday.

  • "House was clean and well equipped, except that it has no dishwasher."

The back garden is small but private and a nice additional touch. Weaknesses: - lack of bin collection is a bit of a nuisance but we worked around that - lack of dedicate parking - we thought this would be an issue because we were told off by a lady on the evening we arrived when we parked in the only nearby space we could find because it was outside someone's house (no restriction signs etc.) As it turned out we never had a problem after that parking round the corner, but it would be much better if there was some arrangement for people staying in the cottage to have a dedicated space.

The village of Wooler was an excellent base for exploring the Cheviots and Northumberland coast and has excellent facilities - shops, pubs, cafes, cake shops, takeaways and a Co-op supermarket open 7 days a week, all two minutes walk from the cottage. The owners made us feel very welcome, provided plenty of information about the locality and we were appreciative of the welcome pack of provisions. Much recommended.

Pre-stay information from the owners was really useful. Wooler has a Co-op and for a small town it has plenty of places to get food. The cottage was comfortable and had everything we needed for our stay, and it was well located for exploring the area. We did some nice local walks, visited the coast, and plenty of other attractions including Holy Island, Bamburgh Castle, Hadrians Wall, Alnwick Gardens, and Berwick.

There is a beautiful small patio leading to a lovely established garden full of birds. It is superbly located and was just perfect for the two of us and our two labradors. The high street is one minute away, the supermarket about the same and a recreation ground for early and late walks with the dogs just moments away. The house was warm with lots of hot water, well equipped and spacious. Wooler is a lovely little place and there are some super walks either from the cottage or a short drive away. We had just stayed in Alnwick for a week, which was fabulous with lots of walks around and about and beautiful coastline to enjoy. It was good to have a two location holiday. We loved the cottage, the town and the area. Definitely will be back

York cottage is a lovely little place in a lovely little village, it is well equipped, and very comfortable, beautiful views out of the back windows and from the garden. It made a great base for us to explore Northumbria, and we found the local shop owners very friendly, helpful and polite. One word of advice, when Jeff the owner tells you the Chinese does big portions, he means BIG portions. We do plan return to Wooler in a few years and we hope York cottage will still be available, as it will be the first place we look at. By the way Jeff, I was sorely tempted to take that shower home with us, it's much better than the one we have at home.

  • "Our disappointment is not specifically aimed at Sykes, but at the owner of York Cottage."

Mr Milburn probably labours under the illusion that everything is fine! Rubbish disposal was onerous - only one (small) receptacle in the whole house, and that was an ‘open’ bin in the kitchen not a peddle bin. Then we had to take the bag to a public street bin! Only one toilet roll supplied. All beds were most uncomfortable. The television was extremely poor quality and the freeview not fully functional. However the biggest concern relates to the heating. Our arrival was expected any time after 3pm, we arrived approximately 4.30. It was extremely cold and the heating control was still at 12 degrees! We immediately turned this to 23 degrees - it took THREE days to warm the whole house! The outside temperature on arrival was only 3 degrees, but a local resident was retained to manage and clean the property, so we expected that she would make sure the property was welcoming. Over many years we have rented holiday accommodation and never been as disappointed as we were with York Cottage.
