"Katherine and Nick are the perfect hosts."
They live on site and are available if required but after a warm welcome they leave you to enjoy their wonderful facilities. We returned in November after enjoying our stay in the Summer and we have already booked to stay there again. We love it so much. What more can I say.
"Stunning lodge in the most peaceful setting."
Owners were very welcoming and friendly. Garden is a great safe place even for little a dog and the property itself was a home from home. Thanks for a great stay xx
"Property as described."
Cottage in good, clean order. Very nice setting with the lake just outside. Owners very friendly. If I hadn't Google Street-mapped the area beforehand might have found a bit difficult to locate. Having said that, will probably use again.
"Cottage was cosy and owners were lovely."
Location was perfect and the woods on the doorstep were brilliant for walks with the dog. The Bear Inn was a nice short walk to enjoy lovely beers and food too, and exploring the Peak District area was an experience as it is so beautiful. The adorable goats the owners kept were a joy and we absolutely loved them. Nothing negative about the property or our welcome by the owners at all and we recommend Bear Lake highly. One point though was the directions given by Sykes on where to find the property was poor.

Lovely cottage in beautiful quiet surroundings ,warm and cosy, enjoyed the fishing, owner's were about if needed , nice having to not worry about dog getting out as very secure, had decent WiFi with Vodafone and O2,one of the best cottages we have stayed in, thanks
"Very disappointed with the property, outlook was amazing but unfortunately the inside let it down."
Would not stay there again
"I have mobility issues and found that Bear Lodge was one of the best properties I have ever found."
We are a family of three adults who all really enjoyed our stay and found that the property had everything we needed. Then we would say that the property is set in such beautiful scenery with its very own lake. The owners were most helpful and very lovely people, and we cannot thank them enough for their kindness. Health permitting we will definitely be back again next year.
"Bear Lake Lodge was the ideal location for a "Get away from it all" break."
Just what the doctor ordered!!! Peace, tranquillity and the owners are wonderful and on hand should you have any queries but leave you to enjoy your stay. Their dogs, sheep and goats are also a delight. The view from the lounge of the lake is wonderful and ideal to walk the dog, she loved it!!! Also a large enclosed garden for my furry friend to safely patrol. Plenty of safe walks within a short distance for spaniels who need to be off lead too, making it the ideal destination for us all. The bed was so comfortable enabling a far better sleep than at home. A very pleasant accommodation all round which I can thoroughly recommend and hope to return to again. Many Thanks Katherine and Nick for a wonderful stay xx
"A comfortable lodge to spend a relaxing holiday."
Loved the idyllic location. It is only the fact we now have 2 dogs that we would not book again. The owners too were lovely.
"Bear Lake Lodge is a lovely property in a quiet serene setting."
It has everything you need. The beds were very comfortable to. It also stays cool just what you want when the temperature was 30 degrees! most days. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
"Lovely hosts, quiet and peaceful."
Great view of the lake Good dog walks. Bit dated the property, but clean and comfortable, with everything you need supplied. Would recommend
"Lovely lodge next to lake-great views and dog walks!"
"It was our first trip to Derbyshire and we couldn’t have picked a better place to stay."
The lodge was excellent, very quiet, with the lake just outside. It is ideally located to visit many lovely places, Crich Tramway Village is definitely worth a visit as is Carsington Water and of course Chatsworth all within easy reach. We enjoyed meals at The Hangjng Gate and the Bulls Head, both within a few miles drive.
Lovely area. Owners daring and welcoming. Booked again for next year
"Bear lake lodge We have been away with Sykes at least 12 times and 4 times in the last 2 years and never had need to complain, ever."
If it hadn't had been for the beds then we could have dismissed the rest, but that made everything else seem so much worse and built up a pattern of uncleanness which we couldn't dismiss. The property is in a nice setting and some bits were spotless, so we wonder if something has gone wrong or someone has got distracted and forgotten some of their chores. The settee doesn't look much but is a recliner and very comfy. It is very peaceful, you can hear a pin drop at night. Plenty of hot water and the heating is very efficient. This may be a one-off, but we won't be coming back to find out. We never saw the owners, and we would have said something if we had. We didn't want a confrontation on their doorstep and then stay for the rest of the week and if they had offered to sort some of our issues, the trust had already gone with the way they left the place for us. Dog smell upon entering. Bedding crumpled, smelly and used tissue between sheets. Pillows smell of a grufty old man's unwashed head. Had to buy new pillows, febreeze and cleaning stuff. 3 mattress protectors on 1 bed and bottom1 ripped to shreds, top 2 stunk and 3rd was ripped but had to leave on. Bathroom soap, used, in basket and wash puff suckered to wall. Round foil top off something stuck to the mouldy shower curtain which had obviously not been cleaned. What is the rusty old cabinet about? There were still stuff inside that we didn't even want to touch and it was rusty inside and out. Oven trays disgusting but couldn't get oven to work anyway, thankfully Front door does not close properly or lock after sun has been on it all day. Had to force shut from outside and use patio doors. Used whole bottle of Febreeze, zoflora and pack of wet wipes to clean place for 2 hours before we decided if we were going to stay. Mattress overlaps bed about 6 inches on width. Knob on end of bedstead broken. Pull light switch above bed cord is snapped 1ft from ceiling. Not a smart TV and even if it was it would need the Internet to work as a smart TV anyway. No WiFi. What is with the Amazon firestick remote control on the windowsill, i got my hopes up? Signs saying dogs on lead and no dogs allowed around the pond yet owners jack Russell runs around unaccompanied and owner walked 3 dogs around the pond off lead all way around. As you can imagine, we left 2 days early, very disappointed
"Loved staying at bear lodge it is so peaceful and was a real tonic ."
The hosts are lovely people . The only thing missing is a washing machine for longer stays there .
"We arrived in the snow on Friday but found the cottage was lovely and warm inside and remained that way throughout the stay."
We brought our daughters German Shepherd dog with us and the wet room proved invaluable for giving him a wash down after our walks out in the beautiful surrounding countryside. The fenced in garden was great for the dog. The cottage was very comfortable and had everything we needed for a great weeks winter break.
"Visited Bear Lake Lodge late Nov for a short break before Xmas."
Really enjoyed the surroundings and the facilities provided, a little gem in the countryside and within easy reach of local towns and great circular walking routes. Easy access and parking to the property, good local pub for food if needed, and fishing on the expansive lake provided good sport. Would certainly recommend to friends and will return.
"Had a really enjoyable stay"
"Owners were very helpful and recommended nearby areas for walking."
"We had an absolutely fantastic 4 days, accommodation was excellent, I loved the bear theme."
Quiet and relaxing just what I was looking for. There was a couple if things that were needed, the fridge had no shelves in it, only the bottom glass plate above the drawers also the pillows on the beds didnt match the quality of everything else. Also when we arrived there was a note saying that the weed killer that had been used could be harmful to pets, as we had booked to bring our dog with us, just thought a pet friendly weed killer should have been used. But we had a lovely stay, visited some if the local attractions and would highly recommend.
"Had a lovely stay at bear lodge."
Everything was as stated. Was very comfy and a great location for us
"Bear Lake Lodge was wonderfully thought out and very comfortable and the owners were very welcoming."
The only slight criticism is the cooking utensils could do with an update and a couple of sharp food-preparation knives supplied. I know lots of people don't want to bother to cook when on holiday, but that is part of my enjoyment when staying away!
"BY FAR THE BEST HOLIDAY COTTAGE WE HAVE EVER BOOKED AND WE WILL RETURN VERY SOON, OWNER'S COULD NOT BE MORE HELPFULL A REAL STUNNING PLACE TO STAY."
"We had a lovely week in Bear Lake Lodge."
So quiet and peaceful. The lodge was lovely and well equipped with everything you could possibly need. Beds were very comfy. Lots of lovely walks and places to visit. The owners were very nice too.
"This was defiantly the best cottage I've ever stayed at by far."
Beautifully presented, gorgeous location and 'WOW' what a view. The hosts Nick and Kathryn are so welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. It was so good i booked again for another week on our 2nd day. Thanks so much for making our holiday brilliant. We enjoyed it so much and so did my 2 dogs. Already looking forward to our 2nd visit in October. A ++++++
"This was our 2nd visit to Bear Lake Lodge and we were not disappointed."
The cottage is well equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. The view of the lake is fabulous and it is well stocked with various species of fish. It is the perfect place to relax and unwind. We would definately recommend the cottage and we will certainly be back for a 3rd visit, hopefully in the not to distant future. Finally we would like to thank Katherine & Nick for being great hosts!!!
"Enjoyed our away break."
Such tranquility, waking up to the amazing landscape of the lake and surrounded by woodlands. The walks are great escapes for us and the dog, exploring different walking routes daily.Actually soaking in the chirping from birds is extremely welcoming. The cottage is very functional with all you need. Would definitely visit again!Thank you.A hidden gem of a place.
"Owners superb would go that extra mile to make our stay memorable the living ..."
Owners superb would go that extra mile to make our stay memorable the living quarters were great and the surroundings brilliant for a very relaxing and peaceful holiday ,the only slight downside was that the cooking utensils were a little tired and needed replacing ,having said that we would book this location again ,Great holiday
"A well designed and clean cottage that had everything we needed."
The location so near to the Lake was excellent; our dog loved the walk around it every day. (the listing on Sykes mentions 'Games Room' which is a little misleading)
"Our 2nd stay."
Very peaceful. The lodge was clean and warm. Plenty of hot water. Great shower. Friendly hosts. We had mixed weather. Lots of places to visit. Matlock, Matlock Bath, Crich Tramway village. Bakewell. Great walks through the woods. Fabulous views along the way.
"This was our second stay at the lodge and was just as great as the first one."
The facilities are perfect for a disabled or able bodied person, the situation of the lodge right against the lake gives fantastic views of both scenery and local wildlife. A secure compound for your pet, if you take one, and ample parking for even the biggest MPV. The owners make you feel welcome and could not be more helpful, lovely people!! All in All one of the best holiday lets I have stayed in and I have been to quite a few with Sykes, I would recommend Bear Lake Lodge to anyone.
"We have limited mobility so chose BLL as it had a wet room and enough space to move around using mobility equipment."
Owners where very attentive and there if you needed anything. Couldn't be improved on
"The Owner has everything correct lovely accommodation, like home from home with a better view."
Would highly recommend to anyone.
"Bear lodge was a great holiday, comfortable, relaxing, and warm ."
Everything anyone could ask for, the hosts were interactive kind and helpful, we will definitely return again.
"Owners Katharine & Nick are lovely, friendly & welcoming, when we walked into the lodge it was toasty warm, clean & smelled gorgeous."
Constant hot water, tea, coffee, sugar pots full & fresh milk in the fridge, a nice, thoughtful touch. Kitchen well equipped, had everything we wanted. Wetroom was great, especially for one of us who has limited mobility. Beds were super comfortable, we all slept like logs. The setting is stunning, our pooch loved his walks around the lake & in the nearby woods. Perfect location, peaceful & relaxing. Loved all the little bears in the lodge & the big bear who we named Billy! We can't wait to book again, absolutely loved it. Thank You for a fabulous stay. Best Wishes from Jakki, Stevie, Andy and Mr Spottley the Pooch xxxx
"Very cluttered with old musty cushion, throws, blankets etc."
The beds had lots of linen on with sheets, blankets, pillows, cushions, teddy's etc....all of which smelt. We went out on our 2nd day and had to buy 4 new pillows to use. Leather seating which is what it should be....but there was 1 material recliner armchair which was absolutely filthy on the arms....disgusting! Too cluttered......a home to rent should be minimalistic. We had to move so much stuff to fit our own in and ornaments and pots etc had previous owners stuff in like reading glasses, pens, nail files, boxes of matches etc. Not nice.....not necessary!
"Fantastic walks in a lovely peaceful setting."
Had a very relaxing and chilled out week
"It was in a lovely surrounding and easy to reach everywhere"
"This could be a delightful cottage if the following things were rectified."
All easy and inexpensive to do. Overwhelming smell of laundry products on entering, fortunately took own sheets Lots of glasses but no matching set for 4 people Saucepans iand unclean plastic pit in a heap in cupboard at floor level Very thin towels albeit fairly new Too many ornaments. Cutlery drawer not cleaned Half used food products in cupboard. Burnt ironing board cover Stained upholstery at head level on chair, grubby cushions. Insufficient advice regarding recycling eg food waste NO CONTACT FROM OWNERS
"Really nice location!"
Good facilities although some furniture could be updated! Leaflets and brochures would benefit from being replaced with current versions and one of the reasons we selected it was how close it was to a local pub, which has sadly closed! Very quiet and peaceful!
"A really comfortable bungalow in a beautiful quiet location, with lovely view of the Bear Pond."
Absolutely perfect for anyone with limited mobility too. Well equipped and very clean with very helpful and friendly owners. Lots of lovely walks right from the door and many wheelchair friendly walks in the local area. We would thoroughly recommend the bungalow and the area and intend to return for another holiday.
"What a find, want to keep it all to myself, Bear lake lodge is such a lovely place, we were so relaxed & comfy, as novices at fishing we caught 20lb carp, saw squirrels, jays , bats, water snake, lovely woodland walk, Katherine & Nick were the perfect hosts."
We will be back, already looking. Thank you. X
Location stunning - Views and tranquillity of the place were off the scale. Central to several market towns and plenty to see and do. The owners were very polite and treat you like family. If it's a relaxing break you are after I haven't been anywhere that matches bear lake lodge.
"The location was lovely, but the lodge was filthy, old food and glass in the sink plug hole, bathroom smelt like sweaty feet, kitchen cupboard handles were all sticky, found broken glass on both rugs in the lounge/kitchen area, the bed had 3 fitted sheets on it!"
!! WHY I NEED A REFUND, NOT HAPPY
"The property was not clean."
I had to ask the owner to change the bedding in one of the bedrooms and had to wash the salad drawer and shelves in the fridge. There was food ie cheese crackers, flour etc in one of the cupboards- it felt like someone had been living there prior to our arrival. On the plus side the cottage was lovely and warm with plenty of hot water and in a superb location- very peaceful and picturesque.
Great walking shinning cliff woods magical !!!! Views over the valley breathtaking!! I have lived in Derbyshire for 26 years and I have just found shinning cliff woods it is beautiful. My hosts are lovely so helpful great stay highly recommend Thankyou
"Extremely beautiful setting."
Relaxed atmosphere. Owners were extremely kind and helpful. Local restaurants and shopping was excellent. Great walks and stunning views. Fishing just outside the lodge was fabulous. The wildlife was amazing. Highly recommend bear lake lodge.
"What it says on the can."
It really is an oasis of peace and relaxation. Views of the lake at sunrise, the ducks and the squirrel. How better to enjoy that first cup of tea/coffee? Fish splashing in the lake( which is very well stocked) I fished every day and caught six different species over the week. This is THE place to chill out and unwind. We will certainly be returning for another holiday in thf not too distant future.
"We had a wonderful time at Bear Lake Lodge, the setting is beautiful and we loved how quiet and tranquil it was."
We heard owls, we saw bats, and we had some great walks in the surrounding countryside. We were impressed with the dog-proofing around the lodge, very safe and secure for dogs. We didn't want to leave!
"Had a lovely relaxing 7 nights."
Owners met us at the gate with the key, very friendly. Fully enclosed property ideal for our dog to wander in and out. Good layout in main open plan kitchen, dinner and living room. Plenty of plates cutlery and general for cooking. large Wetroom with rain & standard shower, plenty of hot water and pressure. The beds (2xdoubles) were really, really comfortable. Fishing lake on your door step along with several woodland walks which were manageable even for myself who is waiting for 2 knee replacements. Locally a couple of pubs within a mile and Belper a 10 minute drive away having pubs/ eateries supermarkets and petrol stations. All together a good place to explore the surrounding areas of Matlock,Bakewell,Carrsington water etc. No wifi but a good sized TV in main lounge and bedroom. Mobile signals a little sketchy but got full signal and internet deep in the forest on walks with the dog!!!!??? Would definitely re-book in the future.
"Fantastic cottage by your own lake."
Perfect for 4 & a dog. On a farm with goats & pigs. Lots of walks nearby & beautiful countryside. Recommend highly.
"Things didn’t get off to a great start as the owner was unsure if/when we were arriving or leaving."
The house was in a beautiful spot with modern fixtures and fittings although some of the soft furnishings were a little dated. The house had been tidied but not clean so there was our dilemma, if we went back home we were not sure if we could get our money back or get somewhere else as such short notice. So we decided to clean the lodge ourselves and 2 hours later I felt a lot better although still very disappointed that this was necessary. Food residue on the worktops/floor, fridge dirty (not going anywhere near the freezer box as food inside), mat not hoovered and damp and that’s just the kitchen. Bathroom had other issues, muck and hair under the toilets seat, dirty taps and towel rail. We did not ever use the shower curtain as there was mould around the bottom but luckily did not need it. The cabinet was full of personal items which is not good during such a pandemic. The lodges location sold it to us to stay but would not return, we expected better.
"We enjoyed the pure serenity of Bear Lake."
It is wonderful to sit outside and watch the wildlife on the lake and take in the fresh air. The indoor comforts are really good, a massive corner sofa to lounge back on or a really nice wing back leather chair and a rise/recline chair. The whole place is disabled friendly, wheelchair accessible and has a lovely wet room. As a disabled person I found this brilliant. The owners, Csth and Nick, are super friendly and helpful, can't do enough for you.
"Fantastic relaxing stay."
Hosts Kath and Nick are so friendly, welcoming, and there if needed. Lodge is well equipped with lovely views of the lake. One of the most spacious Sykes properties we have stayed in, also lots of natural light. Beds are extremely comfortable. Wet room is a great addition with constant hot water and the shower is powerful enough for a great shower, no shower seat but we knew this so took our own. Warm and cosy in colder months. Access is perfect with a ramp to front door and parking right outside the door for anyone with limited mobility, inside property is all level except one step onto patio from french doors, but patio also accessible via ramp without step as flat slabs all around property. On the whole a great property. A small adults only camp site on the same site but cottage has low fencing all round with no access to campers and camping is closed through winter months. Very rural location and a car is essential unless going walking which was ideal for us for a total getaway. We have already booked another stay.
"We had a lovely few days at Bear Lake Lodge."
It was warm and cosy and just what we needed to recharge the batteries. The owners were lovely and friendly too. We will definitely be back to the Lodge!
"Had a lovely quiet week away."
Traveled round beautiful Derbyshire. Not for anyone who wants to be in the middle of things. But a great place to relax & chill out nick & kath the owners make you feel really welcome just a nice place to be thanks neil & Nicola
"Beautiful location, perfect for our stay!"
Very lovely owners!
"Superb lodge in a superb setting, extremely pleased with it all."
A very enjoyable holiday and owners very nice indeed.
"Really enjoyed staying in the cottage."
It wS just as described, great views across the lake. Ideal location to visit the Peak district. The only negative was no WiFi. Nick and Catherine were really lovely and very helpful.
"Although the lodge was very nice we felt it was in need of a bit more care in regards to cleaning in the bathroom, everywhere else was ok,also if you wanted to cook a meal there was a lack of saucepans, but after saying this the location was fine."
"We found the whole 4 days so tranquil and definitely would return."
"What a fabulous place, very clean and well equipped."
Lots of local walks, very dog friendly with enclosed garden. The owners are such lovely people, very helpful & very discreet. If you like fishing the lake is well stocked & easily accessible.
"Fantastic cottage in a beautiful location, very well equipped with everything you need and the bed was so comfy!"
! Great base for sightseeing, but the woods next door are an added bonus for lots of off lead walks for the dog!
"Very nice place."
"This lodge is absolutely Perfect."
"The location of the cottage was really great as it was quiet, it was a short distance away from shops and near to the main roads for getting around."
Thereis a caravan site at the samr location but we never had any problems with this.
"Our particular 'secluded' cottage was actually on a caravan Park with no privicy from the caravanners, eg."
No tree line or wall to obscure view, which wasn't made very clear at all on the advertisement
"The surroundings of the lake and easy access to things to see."
The owners were very nice and accommodating..
"If you want a quiet country retreat this is for you."
A real haven! The adjoining caravan site is for adults only and even in August we hardly knew anyone was there. The fishing lake formed a perfect backdrop.
"Everything about the cottage and location was perfect,we will definatly return."
"Owners were very friendly, lovely accommodation was private and peaceful, also dog friendly, with beautiful outlook over private fishing lodge."
A freezer would have been useful, especially so for a longer stay as would a sun umbrella for the patio, as it has full sun all day, which is wonderful if you want to sit and chill. Would definitely revisit.
"Very comfortable bungalow in a lovely setting."
Many places of interest within easy reach and would definitely stay here again.
"We thought the lodge was in a lovely position and enjoyed the quiet."
The drawbacks were the dog hairs upon the sheets, pillow cases and duvet covers, we had to change the bedding in the second bedroom because of this. Also the mat or cushions in the living room smelt of dog wee. We have a dog of our own but did not allow him upon the sofa or beds. Perhaps more diligence should be taken if allowing dogs in the property.
"We had an absolutely fabulous holiday."
The photo did not do it justice; the lake was absolutely beautiful and right next to it. We enjoyed sitting out in these peaceful surroundings and watching the wildlife, ducks, ducklings, a heron, squirrel etc. I suffer from MS and am in a wheelchair. I knew that it would be ok for disabled, from the disabled entrance, but I was absolutely amazed by the no. Of disabled aids there were. Grab handles in shower, it was a wet room, a relaxer recliner chair in living room, which is what I have at home. The doorways were just wide enough for my wheelchair 16” seat, to get through. All it needs to be advertised as suitable for disabled people is another grabrail on the wall to the side of the toilet and lower beds. The beds were far too high for me. We were able to visit Chatsworth House which had excellent accessibility for me and lots of lovely people to help us get round. We went to Haddon Hall, which is totally inaccessible to wheelchairs, I had to wait in garden whilst my family looked around it! We loved Derbyshire and would certainly come back here again.
Will go back again next time
Location! It was such a pleasure to overlook the Bear Lake. Every morning we rushed to the dinning room to relish the view, it was different but equally beautiful in rain, snow or sun. For seven days it was our lake, with all trees and small islands and fishermen. The cottage is very modern, warm and cosy, equipped with all you need for comfortable holiday. If you are like us and value countryside with no crowds, this is a place for you. We recommend: shopping in Morrisons in Belper, Wednesday night steak at the Bear Pub, walks in local woods, walks along Cromford Canal, walk round Carsington Water and visit to Cromford Mills (a must!). Everything within few minutes drive.
"I phoned your office before making the booking for Bear Lodge."
...we were told that it was situated not far from Belper Station and within walking distance to the town...in fact it was about 5 miles up in the hills and we were snowed in for two days and could not meet our family for a Birthday lunch!!!!!
"Brilliant lodge in fantastic location"
"It said it was dog friendly but it wasn't."
people coming and going and an open farm. games room and pool was nice.
"Beautiful location, well-equipped and cosy cottage."
We booked at short notice to avoid the fireworks and were delighted with the cottage. Would highly recommend to others - our dog loved the adjacent field to walk around and we love the view and comfort.
