  • "The Barn was extremely clean and comfortable and we all had a comfortable few nights sleep."

However it wasn't the best for dogs we originally had planned to take 2 dogs with us and ended up only taking 1. The Garden was extremely small and not enclosed. We were allowed to roam on the fields aslong as the animals were not around although these were all surrounded by electric fences so I couldn't take my dog off the lead at any point. We had assumed that the pictures showing the fields were what we would have for the dogs. Although it is mentioned in the description that the garden was not guaranteed to be enclosed we did not expect to have electric fencing and therefore would be unsafe to take our dogs off the lead. There is also a small cabin in the garden that was rented out to another couple during our stay so we found there was very little privacy with the owners attached next door and then the cabin in the garden. We had planned to go to Alton Towers for one day of our trip which in the description was 2.3 miles away. However we found that it was actually 8.8 miles away from the property according to our car sat All in all beautiful barn but not good for any four legged friends.

We thought it might be helpful to provide some information for guests staying with their dogs. The garden/grass area around Greenacres is not an enclosed garden for dogs. We sit in 11 acres and you are very welcome to walk your dogs in the fields. An organic dairy herd sometimes graze in the fields and so we do ask that you pick up after your dog as that can have health implications for ‘the girls’. As they are dairy cows they come and go for milking and they move around this and other grazing land too so you might not see that much of them. You can walk through the fields whilst the cows are there as long as you take care as you would walking near any livestock. We ask people to keep their dog on a lead going through the field when the cows are out just to be on the safe side. You can access some walks direct from Greenacres - you can join the Staffordshire Way and the old railway line walk up the Churnet Valley from the corner of the field. We are having our fence replaced later this year and until that has been done there is a secondary electric fence in place just as a precaution, to keep the cows out, not to keep you in. It wont stop you walking around the fields or joining the walks mentioned above. There is some lovely countryside and great walks to enjoy in this area with your dogs and some dog friendly cafes on the way that we can recommend to you. Greenacres is about 3 miles away from Alton Towers by road, not 8.8. Turn right out of the top of our drive, to Alton village and follow the signs for Alton Towers. You can’t miss it as it’s well signposted. Property Owner

It was very spacious, nicely appointed, very clean and most importantly comfortable. Views across open fields were delightful. A car is pretty much essential as the property is in a rural location with not a lot in the very near vicinity. We had no complaints and offer only positive feedback. • "Lovely big cottage in a beautiful area."

Cottage was great but we felt it would benefit from more kitchen equipment (without having to ask for it) also an information pack of the area. Shepherds hut too close & gives no privacy. Parking a bit restricted.

Thank you for the feedback, glad you liked the area and the Cottage! The Cottage comes equipped to cater for a party of 4 and we try to keep clutter to a minimum so that guests have plenty of room for storage. We always ask arriving guests to let us know if there's anything they would like so that we can cater for any particular requirements. Rather than having a printed guide, we put all the information on our website to keep printing to a minimum and be a little more environmentally friendly. A link to our website is included in the welcome email we send before guests arrive. If you are coming as a group of 4 in two cars, we can accommodate both. The property is set back from the road in its own land, so it's very private however it is also our home and there is a Shepherd Hut in the grounds some distance away and separated by a willow hurdle fence. Thank you for staying with us, lovely to meet you! We cut down kitchen equipment a little during covid changeovers so that we could process everything through the dishwasher but thank you for flagging up some missing bits and pieces, we’ll review what’s there and top up! Kitchen equipment was basic but adequate for standard meals. Hot water and heating worked well. Internet was surprisingly good for a rural place. Location was charming with a very pleasant walk along the disused railway close by. The property accepts dogs but due to the immediate presence of chickens and livestock they have to be on a lead to go outside which was a bit of a pain. It would be very useful if there was a fenced off area outside the cottage. However there is lots to see in the local area, which is very attractive and I would recommend this cottage as a holiday destination.

I particularly appreciated being able to walk the dog across the field to the Churnet Valley Railway path, which is a short stroll to the pub in Denstone or a slightly longer one to Alton or further along to Oakamoor. There's lovely walking country from the doorstep or a short drive away, and of course Alton Towers is a short hop in the car too. Also, the wifi is sufficiently strong that I was able to work from the Barn for a couple of days without any glitches (apart from the distracting view!). Thoroughly recommended.

The local pub does great food and is in walking distance although having to get the dogs across the first cattle grid was a bit tricky. The Barn was clean and the utility room with a washer was a bonus and great for the dogs. Due to current restrictions the kitchen wasn't as well stocked with dishes and utensils as i think it normally would be but it was sufficient for our needs. The downstairs bedroom would have benefited from having some ventilation in there at night but it was ok. The space was great and the kitchen/dining area was just fab for 4 people and 2 dogs. The downstairs bathroom has a good bath but no shower/shower attachment so this made hair washing a bit tricky! The garden wasn't as enclosed as we expected and the caravan was quite close by but again this was fine. Overall I would recommend The Barn, the hosts were very friendly when we met them and it was ideal for a weekend away, we would stay there again if we go back to the area again.

The cottage was absolutely wonderful, superb location, peaceful, tranquil yet not far away to local amenities. The owners next door exceeded welcoming. They were so friendly but not intrusive. Really great time. Would recommend it without hesitation. Our family had a truly wonderful time, made better by the owners, their son and their gorgeous dog Dara. Really worth a visit. The photographs on the website are good, but when you see the cottage in real life you will be blown away. Thank you for a truly amazing time.

It is ideally located for alton towers. The views are stunning, the photos on page do not do the cottage justice, and the owners are very nice. Definitely booking again.

They are a lovely family, close enough to help, but not overbearing. Dara the dog was a pleasure to have around and a great companion for our greyhound, Gino. The cottage was beautifully clean and spacious.

The property

This spacious, semi-detached cottage is attached to the owner's home, on the edge of Denstone near Alton.

Built in the mid-19th century as part of the Alton Towers estate, this brick-built farmhouse retains the original beams and character, yet offers extremely light and spacious contemporary open plan living.

If you like your peace and tranquillity but don't want to be miles from anywhere, then this is the cottage for you.

There's a farm at the top of the track with an organic dairy herd, and it's these ladies who will more than likely be your neighbours during your stay as they graze in the lush green pastures right outside your door.

As you enter the cottage there's a warm place for the whole group, including the dogs, to dry off and park your boots.

Step through to the sitting room with a wood burner, which is a peaceful place to watch TV, then up a few steps to the open plan kitchen and dining area, and the ground-floor bedroom.

The well-equipped kitchen with tiled flooring has a large arched window with beautiful countryside views and the dining table can easily seat everyone in your party.

If you just fancy a bit of me time, there's tons of breathing space.

This abundance is repeated in the tastefully appointed first floor bedroom with an en-suite shower room, plus there is a second bedroom on the ground floor alongside a family bathroom.

With many attractions, eateries and inns close by, there's much to tempt you away, though you may choose to enjoy the fantastic views without leaving this lovely retreat.
