  • "We can highly recommend Sycamore cottage, it's quiet, cosy and warm with a wonderful garden."

The owner lives on site and is a great host. Foolow is a lovely village with lots of walks from the door or just a short distance away. The village pub serves very good food; it also has a small supply of bread and cakes from Bakewell Bakery available to purchase. There's no shop in Foolow but there's a well stocked Spar a couple of miles away in Calver.

  • "We had a very enjoyable and relaxing week."

Sycamore Cottage is cosy, comfortable and welcoming, and the garden in particular is a delight. Maveen the owner lives next door if you need her, but totally respects guests' privacy. The cottage was immaculately clean. It is well placed for walks and visits. The advice to reverse into the drive is sound - thanks to the owner for that. I would add that having a second person watching for traffic on the pavement opposite really helped! The only very minor inconvenience for us was the lack of a freezer. (We were aware of this in advance and planned accordingly). There is excellent food shopping at Buxton (Waitrose, Aldi and Morrisons, all within a short distance). A special recommendation for the Proper Pasty shop in Bakewell - really excellent coffee and pastries!

The property was very snug with 4 adults. A nice garden area available. The location is excellent, we walked or cycled from the door every day and there is an abundance of places of interest a short drive away. The village pub does a special pie and pint deal on top of an already good choice of food. Pubs at Bretton (1m walking distance but up a long steep hill) and Eyam (2m, flat) are also recommended.

The little village is full of stone built cottages and they are vert atmospheric. It is very comfortable with all you need to enjoy a stay in the Peak District. We did not cook meals as we wanted to enjoy the lovely cuisine of the area. There was cooking facilities and cookware if needed. The owner was welcoming but not intrusive and we enjoyed her lovely garden and outside pots. I would recommend this cottage to anyone wanting a short break in a quiet village. The village is just off a main road and has very good pub for meals. We dined there for two nights as the food and landlady were so good.

The pictures had been stretched. Note the oval millstone outside the Glass porch etc. Oven did not work. Owners response? "It worked last week". Owner entered accommodation while we were away. When questioned about it there was a fair bit of hesitation before admitting she had been through the property to close an upstairs window. We had purposely left the window o a crack to try dry out condensation which nightly left a pool of water on the window sill. Very old property which has been rented out for over forty years . Very small for four people. Both bedrooms up a steep flight of stairs. All in all an unpleasant experience. No washing machine or use thereof. The list goes on.
