  • "Had a fantastic holiday, great location, friendly clean village and excellent house."

House was clean and well presented with extra touched such as the toys and books in the children's room. Parking is tight and our van couldn't get into the parking, however we got parked on the main street. The park opposite is great and our young boys enjoyed having the park so close. Enclosed garden at back is small but functional and handy for a BBQ.

  • "Daisy Cottage was fabulous."

We are so pleased to stay in the cottage. It was really well equipped with lots of toys, cooking equipment and comfy sofas and beds. The owner was really great with communication and made us feel very welcome. The location was perfect for us, with easy access to local services and the wider surroundings. The parking was tight but we got our estate on with relative ease, some patience required at first but as the days went on it became second nature. The park being so close was great with a toddler - we even made friends with a local cat, which we named park cat.

  • "We had a wonderful stay at Daisy Cottage."

It was very clean, bed comfortable and great shower. The cottage is in a nice little village with a great community shop just a minutes walk up the road. There are two pubs, the Old Bowling Green, which is lovely, and does food (at the time we stayed) on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but take away only. Which we tried and enjoyed. The other pub The Miners Standard, is up the hill about a 10 minute walk and did good food too. Both pubs made us welcome. The cottage has a large selection of games, books, toys, plenty of towels, a little courtyard garden out back and parking out front. I noted that a lot of people commented on the parking being tight, and it is but we got used to it and I was able to park my Focus Estate in the parking space each night. Some lovely walks from the cottage too, right outside the door turn left. The accomodation was comfortable through out and we loved our stay. Its located for easy access to the rest of the Peak district and I believe the bus also travels through the village, but we used our car.Great communication from the owner before arrival, helpful suggestions on area and a welcome bottle of wine and cake, very appreciated. Kitchen has lots of utensils. Great stay.

The kids really loved all the different toys. Everything was perfectly laid out. The only minor frustration was the lack of a vacuum cleaner but I can’t say I only missed that on a holiday.

Dear Michael Thank you for taking the time to leave your review, we're so pleased that you all enjoyed your stay at Daisy Cottage. I found the stair gate at the top of the stairs awkward to negotiate being older and less nimble these days. Otherwise loved the cottage and facilities excellent. Negotiating the parking space was a bit challenging, a car much bigger than our Jazz could be tricky. This was our 4th stay in Winster, a good centre for walks and sight seeing

  • "We had a wonderful stay - 2 adults, 2 children (2 & 5 years old)."

I researched and deliberated but super glad on the choice. The location is idyllic, quiet and lovely. Local shop has everything you need - we did a click & collect at Matlock for main supplies. The little park/playground is fab which is opposite the cottage. The house itself is very cosy but spacious - has all the bits you need. The children loved the toys. There is absolutely everything from toys, books, games, smart tv, comfy beds and kitchen utensils. I was grateful there was a bed guard for the lower bunk. Heating is efficient and quick to warm up (shower also amazing). Overall the cottage felt homely as soon as we walked in. The local pub (Bowling Green) has great food and it is possible to walk to the other pub (Miners Standard). We went to the Tram Museum, Heights of Abraham, Gulliver's Kingdom and Matlock Bath - so plenty to do with kids. There are also some lush walks but with a toddler this wasn’t possible for us. The parking is tight but if you drive past the cottage there a turning circle and you can then reverse in. It’s possible to park on main high st and just walk down lane if you have a larger car. I would not hesitate in rebooking - we all had a brilliant time.

Kate, thank you for taking the time to leave such a lovely review, I'm sure future guests will find it super helpful. We're so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Daisy Cottage and look forward to welcoming you back again soon. Property Owner

  • "We loved the cottage and it's setting really peaceful, warm and cosy, the level of equipment was very good and spotlessly clean throughout, probably the best WIFI and TV package we have ever experienced in a rental property and we do this every year three times a year lock downs allowing."

This one is up there with the best, get it booked you wont regret it. Overall very good and I would book again. However Some indication of just how awkward the parking is at the property should be mentioned . I struggled to get a Mazda 6 into the parking area, and after the first day started leaving it on the High Street and walking down, anything bigger than a small SUV would be a tight fit. anyone arriving in the dark would should watch out and get someone to guide them into the bay Best bet would be to unload and then move car to High Street, which is free parking anyway and is only a 100yds away from the property. This by the way wouldn't stop me from booking here again, it,s a negative, but a very small one.

  • "This cottage was amazing!"

So pretty. The owner Sharon provided everything you could ever need. The children were so happy with the huge number of toys and books for them and the bedroom was set up beautifully for our little boy. The park is so close as well and a really lovely one too. There was also a baby carrier, stair gate and changing mat in the house laid out ready ....literally everything we needed for the kids which made it much easier for us. The cottage is beautifully decorated and in such a great central location. We were able to get to lots of places including family in Nottingham in less than an hour. Further to previous comments we have seen about the parking at the front of the house...we parked our very long Passat estate easily in the space! Reversing in is the key and knowing how to park! The village of Winster is really lovely to stroll around. The houses are all in beautiful stone and lots of little lanes and pathways. There are footpaths straight from the house into stunning fields and countryside. We also had a meal at The Miners Standard up the hill which was really yummy. We will definitely stay here again in the future when visiting family and the Peak District. Thank you Sharon for the lovely cake and wine on our arrival too. We give Daisy Cottage 10/10.

There was alot of crumbs on the dark sofa and cob webbs in the kitchen. We found the photos a little miss leading as it was although there was another bed. It was OK as we used the sofa bed. Also as we stayed a week we really could have done with a hoover just to keep on top of the downstairs. Thankfully the weather was good so we managed with the dustpan and brush.

  • "Cottage was clean and comfortable - very well laid out."

However, the listing claimed off-street parking. This is quite misleading as the walled space at the front of the cottage was far to small for our Skoda Octavia Estate. The space would probably be OK for a small car but even that would need to be parked carefully as the uneven entry might damage underneath. We parked on-street in the village and in fairness there was always somewhere to park there although I am sure the locals are not too happy about visitors parking where they might want to park! We always look for cottages with off-street parking and this would have been a deal-breaker for us had the listing been more accurate hence this posting that might warn other visitors of the potential problem. Other than this the area is beautiful, quiet and picturesque. Plenty of walking and great pubs such as The Druid in nearby Birchover within walking distance. The Miners Standard was a good drinking den but we were not impressed with the food so probably better to avoid. Matlock Bath Hotel Spa was a disappointment after we booked a morning Spa there so do not expect a lot.

  • "The main reason is that we found the bed very uncomfortable and struggled to sleep."

We both suffered from aches and pains in the day time due to the mattress. Also, we didn't think the sofa's were comfortable.Although towels were provided they were not pleasant to use. They were certainly not washed with conditioner or fluffed in a tumble dryer. However, we think it is a beautiful cottage and was surprisingly spacious. It was very well equipped and spotlessly clean. We were very grateful to find a pint of milk in the fridge, some delicious biscuits and beers. It is perfectly located for local attractions. Although there is parking at the front of the cottage (and we were given instructions re the turning space at the end of the lane) it is very difficult to park unless you have a small car.

Walls in the double room have mould and were very wet from damp round the window. Bathroom window couldn’t be closed making it very cold this time of year. Beside the negative above, house well equipped and in a good location for chatsworth and surrounding attraction. In a nice village with a decent pub for food.

Thank you for your feedback. We very much appreciate our guests feedback and we are pleased you enjoyed your stay, thank you for your very positive feedback overall. Regarding the issues raised we are sorry for any inconvenience caused. Unfortunately just prior to your visit we discovered that the humidity extractor fan in the bathroom was not functioning. In old stone walled cottages humidity from showers and baths quickly condenses onto cold walls. To try and control the humidity before we could arrange for the extractor repair we left the bathroom window fixed open by approximately 1.25cm. We have now arranged for the bathroom humidity extractor to be repaired or replaced in time for our next guests arrival. Property Owner

The cottage is very pretty and reasonably well equipped, however we were met with quite an overpowering smell in the living room. We couldn't put our finger on it, it could have been damp, but we couldn't sure. There is an automatic air freshener in place so i suspect the owners are aware of it. As it was a rainy week, we had to spend quite a lot of time inside the cottage and although it might sound like a small thing the smell did have an effect on our overall enjoyment, which is why we have marked lower than we would have normally.

It is a lovely cottage, very well located. The owner was very pleasant and send us a very clear and useful information booklet. I have no hesitation recommending it. A couple of very minor caveats 1- there was no washing machine. We knew it before coming so we packed accordingly but it would be a useful facility to add to this already very good accommodation; 2- the parking in front of the cottage was quite tricky for a larger car. Again not a big issue given that we could park a bit further away on the main street. Everything was as expected and very straightforward. I would book again on Sykes Cottages.

The weather over our stay was inclement throughout but the cottage was always warm inside. Four of our party were adults and as the cottage only had one bathroom we thought there could be problems, but everything was fine. The whole experience was a dream, booking was easy, the owner was very helpful sending us great information prior to our visit to help us make the most of our short break. Daisy Cottage itself is a slice of Derbyshire heritage, cosy welcoming and very well equipped. Our children loved the children's books, toys and bath toys. We found the wifi to be rapid, useful for all our devices and the cottage had everything we could have possible wanted. Granddad loved the wood burner! Winster is a beautiful Derbyshire village full of interesting nooks and crannies and the National Trust's first property purchase in Derbyshire. We ate out at both the Bowling Green and the Miners Standard, both very delightful but very different, we would recommend the Miners Standard for children and we took over the bar. We explored some of the area, taking a lovely walk (to a fantastic pub) to the nearby village of Birchover and the Nine Ladies Standing Stones. We visited Matlock and Bakewell, both beautiful, bustling market towns. Only one complaint from my family - we were only there for a weekend but we will definitely be back!

We were a little disappointed that, given the premium price, the cottage lacked a few "extras". For example: 10-year-old TV with limited digital channels; no facility for catch-up TV (e.g. BBC iPlayer); slow internet; insufficient sockets (e.g. 4 appliances behind sofa but only 2 sockets); squeeky bedroom doors (un-oiled); out-of-date food in kitchen cupboards (now thrown away by us); no black-out blinds and very thin curtains that are too narrow to completely cover windows; no electrical power to gas cooker so automatic ignition did not function; instruction pack from owner not up-to-date (e.g. no bin collection dates for 2018, incorrect info re: window blinds, door keys, etc). Nothing major but shows inattention to detail. Electrical fault with bathroom extractor fan notified to owner by email (no mobile phone reception in cottage) but no response or acknowledgement from owner.

About the location

WINSTER

Bakewell 6 miles; Matlock 4.5 miles.

The conservation village of Winster is situated within the White Peak area of the Peak District National Park and is an extremely pretty place, with a charming 17th century market house at its centre, and other imposing 17th and 18th century houses, many three storeys high. The three main streets - Main Street, East Bank and West Bank are interconnected by alleyways known as ‘ginnels’, which are well worth exploring. The village of Winster is famous for its Morris dancers, the annual Shrove Tuesday pancake race, Wakes festivities in June, and the Secret Gardens of Winster event in July. Within the village there is a well-stocked, community-owned general store incorporating a Post Office. There are two pubs, both serving food and traditional beer. Bakewell, Matlock, Chatsworth House, and the Peak Rail Steam Railway are all nearby and, for keen walkers and cyclists, The Limestone Way runs along the edge of the village. The Tissington and High Peaks walking and cycling trails, with bike hire available, both lie less than 5 miles from the village, a wonderful base for exploring the Peak District.
