"Another excellent holiday at Penrose cottage."
The views, the wildlife, from squirrels to buzzards and kites and any number of small birds. Friendly tame sheep, horses to feed and all backed up by Keith, the owners, encyclopaedic knowledge of the local area. Comfortable and warm, well equipped with three good sized double bedrooms. Walking directly from the cottage, wether it be on the old railway or Brecon canal, up the mountain for the more energetic to the keeper’s pond, or after a short car journey up Sugar Loaf. Highly recommended. Keith and Dianne are excellent hostes, as is Glen a lovely friendly collie who loves his walks.
"A lovely warm , comfortable and clean cottage."
The downstairs bedroom and accessible bathroom were prefect for my elderly Dad. Gorgeous views from the large garden and we loved the friendly sheep! We will definitely return to Penrose Cottage to do some of the walks in the surrounding area .
"Keith was lovely, made sure to show us everything we'd need and also gave us some recommendations of where we could visit (he was mindful of my physical limitations) The cottage was lovely and spacious while remaining cosy."
It was warm, which was nice after long days out. It was clean. It felt incredibly homely. BONUS: There was sheep :) The view outside was stunning which made early mornings much more pleasant A few things to note was some of the stairs are uneven but once you've done them once you remember the ones to watch out for. Some locks were tougher to do but all rooms had a functioning lock. I really liked how the property was accessible inside (ground floor bedroom, wet room, rails on both side of the stairs) one personal thing was the mattresses wasn't the most comfortable, so I'd reccomend bringing an extra duvet that you can lay down for extra padding if you suffer with any chronic pain etc Hope to stay again in the future :)
"We loved this spacious cottage with all the facilities you need for a relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings with stunning views of the Welsh countryside and Sugar Loaf Mountain."
The owner Keith is so helpful with places to visit and recommendations for local attractions. We would thoroughly recommend this cottage for a quiet rural holiday. We loved our stay in Penrose Cottage.
"The location was incredible and the surroundings were really nice to explore, we wandered along the canals and old train tracks and we could easily wander up to the top of the mountains surroundings the house for some immaculate views."
Keepers pool nearby was a lovely place to wild swim and Keith had loads of suggestions for walks and days out. He was always around to help and was insistent we have a relaxing time, helping clear up some mess made by the fluffy cat when we left the food waste bin outside without realising it would be raided and scattered everywhere. The house had a lovely garden and we really enjoyed sitting out there to eat and stare out at the mountains. It was nice to have seperate bathrooms for each of the bedrooms and the space was well maintained. The only small things to mention are that the stairs are an even heights and lead to constant tripping, and the knives in the kitchen were incredibly blunt. Might not be a problem for people who don't enjoy cooking on their holidays but we do and it was a struggle to prepare food. Apart from these small things, we really enjoyed the stay and feeding the very friendly sheep in the field next door was a highlight :)
"Exactly what we wanted and needed for our holiday."
Keith was extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The property was clean and everything we needed was provided for a very comfortable stay. The surrounding countryside was stunning. Would highly recommend Penrose cottage.
"Lovely stay in the quiet countryside."
Keith was an excellent helpful host, we loved it feeding the lambs.
"A lovely place to stay!"
Clean, roomy, quiet, with a lovely lawn garden to sit after a long days walking. Our host very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Full marks and I would certainly stay here again if I was in the area. Angela
"Great cottage, beautiful setting, VERY friendly and accommodating vendor, Perfect!"
"A very comfortable, cosy cottage with stunning views."
We enjoyed our stay at this comfortable, cosy cottage which has fantastic views. The location is very peaceful and ideal for walking from the door and visitng many different places in the area. The hosts are very friendly and always on hand if needed. Hope to return.
"Penrose Cottage is a lovely house in a beautiful area."
The owner and his family are very friendly and helpful.
"A lovely warm cottage in a beautiful setting with superb views of the surrounding mountains."
Very useful having downstairs bedroom with wet room for those not as able. Also nice having 2 en suite bathrooms upstairs.
"A very peaceful location with wonderful views across the valley to Sugarloaf mountain."
Accommodation is very comfortable and well appointed. Roomy upstairs bedrooms all with en-suite. Downstairs walk in shower/ toilet, well thought out. Lounge diner works well, added bonus of conservatory to watch the wildlife from. Friendly sheep to feed and the horses up the lane love a fuss with a few apples, carrots and bread. Host Kieth is a lovely man, nothing too much trouble. A wealth of knowledge about the local area having lived here all his life.
"Ideal accommodation for 3 walking buddies, with bed and ensuite each!"
Good location but a car necessary. Good walks from property. Village has a pub and friendly shop. Property owner friendly and helpful. Warm cottage - February visit.
"We had a lovely week made extra special by the friendly and helpful hosts."
A real treat to each have our own ensuite shower and bedroom.
"Had a wonderful stay at Penrose Cottage."
Keith was very welcoming and had a wealth of knowledge on the area. The property was comfortable and homely with plenty of space etc. The views were outstanding, made even more so with sunny days and frosty mornings. Love the sheep in the adjoining paddock. Very pleasant stay and would love to visit again.
"I would like to say a huge thank you to the lovely couple who own the property."
So helpful. Kind. And considerate. A rare find today. House beautiful. Warm. And views will stay with me for a long time. Thank you for giving folks a chance to stay reasonably in such a beautiful area.
"Keith is a star and very welcoming."
There are one or two repairs required to bring Penrose back to excellent, but overall it is comfortable and we have enjoyed Christmas 2022 there very much indeed. Mum is in a wheelchair and did not like the bathroom floor as it is not anti-slip but she managed. One thing to point out is that althought the lisiting states a fridge freezer being in situ in reality it has a larder fridge with an icemaking compartment which meant that the ice I had bought had to be sacrificed to keep the parsnips frozen. The oven is overly complicated although very efficient once the instructions have been read (A must) also we ate out at The Anatolian Turkish restaurant in Abervaggenny and it is excellent. Keith is a gem and very friendly. Thank you.
"An excellent location, very comfortable, superb views and the added bonus of a friendly and knowledgeable host."
"Lovely clean, warm & cosy cottage."
Spacious ensuite rooms with modern & easy to use shower facilities. Large comfy sofa in the living room. Beautiful countryside mountain views. Nearby picturesque attractions. Keith, the friendly landlord, who lives nearby is a wealth of knowledge for interesting places to visit. Great stay! Wonderful memories!
"This property was in a beautiful location with easy access to Abergavenny and many lovely places to visit."
It was so peaceful. Keith the owner was so helpful and friendly. Beds were so comfortable. The downstairs bedroom and wet room was great for people with limited mobility. There was everything that you needed in the cottage. Absolutely loved our stay and waking up to the views each morning was lovely. Also a great place for star gazing.
"We stayed at Penrose Cottage for the 2nd time in August, and had another fantastic holiday."
The first time there was 2 of us, and this time 6, and the downstairs living area felt a bit too cramped for us all. The cottage had all the facilities & cooking utensils we needed and it’s not too far to a supermarket. I love the cottage & Keith the host, but it looks tired in places & could do with a bit of TLC! The stunning views of course really make this place so special, along with being surrounded by nature, beautiful sunrises & bright stars in the black night sky. There’s no light pollution here! We will be happy to stay here again.
"Penrose cottage was lovely it was peacfull, quiet and relaxing and has amazing views."
Keith and his wife the owners are really helpfull. I would highly recommend Penrose cottage. We will defiantly be back.
"We had an amazing stay in this idyllic cottage."
Keith & family were the perfect hosts. We were staying with a relative with mobility issues and the accommodation worked well for us all. There are many walks & activities close by or you can just relax at the cottage and take in the amazing views and watch the wildlife. Keith has so much knowledge of the area and our chats with him added a personal touch to our stay, a lovely man. We will definitely return to Penrose cottage.
"The property is well laid out with excellent facilities especially for wheelchair access."
The downstairs bedroom and wet room met the needs for our disabled companion and we will be recommending it to the care company we work for. The owners live nearby and were very kind and helpful. The cottage has spectacle views and is very peaceful but local amenities are close by. We are already planning on returning.
"Keith and Dianne (owners) were great, made us welcome and couldn't have been more helpful."
Cottage has amazing views of Sugar Loaf Mountain from the Conservatory and rear garden. Facilities in the cottage were good, all bedrooms fitted with a television. Ground floor bedroom and wet room and toilet for those with disabilities. Full range of white goods. If you like wildlife, birds, rabbits, squirrel abound and a couple of the owners sheep who love lettuce!!! All in all we had a great time and enjoyable holiday in the spectacular Brecon Beacons.
"This was a very clean and comtable cottage with great views across the valley to the mountains."
"A well appointed cottage with stunning views in a very friendly area."
"It could be argued that Penrose Cottage is beginning to show its age and furnishings are quite basic but this doesn't detract from the fact it's a totaly charming holiday home."
The elevated position and garden with spectacular views of the southern Brecon Beacons is a delight. The ground-floor including one bedroom with en-suite for disabled visitors is totally wheelchair friendly. The two first floor bedrooms are comfortable both with excellent en suite showers. The position of Penrose is ideal for exploring Abergavenny and the whole of the Brecon National park. The very affable and highly informative owner Mr Keith Embrey lives in the adjacent house on the other side of a wide shared drive. He was always ready to recommend places to visit and answer any queries we had. We would not hesitate to return to Penrose cottage and recommend it wholeheartedly.
"Very comfortable cottage with great views."
The host was extremely helpful and we would not hesitate to book again.
"Great place for walking."
Oven is a bit slow but other wise the views in the garden Wow. I would recommend this place to anyone, good value as well.
"Penrose cottage is beautifully located and comfortable."
View from the lawns is amazing. I enjoyed my every morning with a cup of tea on the bench in the garden. No traffic noise just birds chirping. What else you want when you are running away from the city life.
"This was a comfortable cottage with lovely views."
Had everything we needed for our stay. The location was excellent for touring the Brecon Beacons, the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley. Keith, the host was helpful and gave us plenty of information. We didn't want to leave and hope to return.
"Superb location,wonderful views."
The facilities for a disabled person made our hioliday so much easier. Having so many things provided made life very comfortable Have already recommended it to a couple with MS
"An excellent property and venue."
Keith went beyond what could be expected of a host. A truly lovely man. A wealth of information about the local area, history and culture. Thank you. We will be returning. Dave, Trish and family.
"2 time staying wonderful cottage cosy and warm Keith is a great host couldn't ask for more ideal to explore the area and beyond."
Will be back again!
"We have thoroughly enjoyed our week at Penrose Cottage."
It’s was comfortable , cosy, clean, warm & the bathrooms were sparkling. The location was perfect for us visiting family & friends locally. The views & garden are breathtaking, and the sound of silence apart from the birds is very therapeutic. I can’t think of a negative word to say about it! We have already booked to return next August , and plan for another winter visit next year. Thank to you Keith, a wonderful host.
"Really nice property, really good location everything you would need for your holiday, the only thing I would say about the stay is that the freezer was quite small, but saying that it wouldn’t stop me from going back, as I said a really nice place and very quiet, nice for a peaceful holiday."
"Location first class, owner made us welcome and gave good instructions to make our holiday enjoyable."
Cottage very clean, comfortable and warm. It was like home from home
"The location was perfect, it is ideally placed for many places to visit."
Found Abergavenny a really good place to visit with its excellent shopping and market. The cottage was clean and well furnished with excellent views over surrounding countryside. The host was very warm and welcoming. It was quiet beyond my wildest dreams, with the birdsong in the evening a most welcome change from traffic where I live. would highly reccomend this cottage to any one who enjoys a walking or cycling break also
"Whilst the holiday cottage and the owner were absolutely delightful, and the cottage an excellent example of a truly accessible cottage for a wheelchair, the response from Sykes was disappointing."
I would LOVE to book this cottage again, but will not book with Sykes.
"We arrived to a very warm welcome from Keith the owner."
He was very helpful and knowledgeable about the area. He lives close by and said if we had any issues or something wasn’t right to let him know. The cottage was lovely, with a big garden and fabulous views, well equipped with plenty of hot water and equipment. The downstairs bedroom was fab as I am in a wheelchair and the wider doors made all the difference as did the shower. It’s a great base, 3 miles from Abergavenny and so close to many popular landmarks. My daughter and partner enjoyed some really good walks, finishing with Sugar Loaf. There are several parks to visit, great if you have children. We will definitely book again. Thank you Keith for you care and kindness.
Keith, the owner, was more than helpful. Great for someone with limited mobility.
"A lovely property with a great garden and views."
Great cycle/walking paths on the canal and old railway track a few mins away, safe for children. Lots of walks right on the door step, Blorenge, Skirrid and the must do Sugar Loaf. Pub and shop in village, Abergavenny has supermarkets and more. Fantastic holiday and hosts.
"The house is in a wonderful location and the owner was very friendly and couldn't fault him, however, the photos are not updated and it is actually modernised quite a lot."
Even has Netflix on the TV. We did book last minute so may be the reason it wasn't perfectly clean and no supply of soap in the bathrooms when we arrived. There was however a good supply of toilet paper and dishwasher tablets which is not always the case. The garden has a wonderful view and was great for our BBQ. One fault that we thought was quite bad is the stairs going to the bedrooms. The top 3 stairs are different heights and whilst holding my baby I slipped down one of them, thankfully I was holding on to the banister! Also all of us tripped up the last but one step a few times. On the whole though the property is very nice.
"Keith the owner of the cottage was very very welcoming and most helpful with anything we needed."
The cottage was homely and well equipped and the bathrooms were very good. Water pressure was very good as was the wifi and mobile signal. We had a great break and would definitely like to return again The pictures and details on Sykes site are very out of date and the owners has been trying without success to get someone to update them. It's not fair on them as the cottage has been upgraded in a lot of ways, these are the things we would like to point out 1) there is a very nice conservatory off the living room that allows access to the garden and the amazing views ( not mentioned at all on the details) 2) The seating in the garden has a shelter around it allowing all weather viewing 3) The furniture is now a modern comfy corner sofa 4) the tv is a full size on in the living room 5) the beds now have duvets on them not bed spreads and the curtains have been renewed 6) the owners mobile number is an old one and has not been updated as requested by the owner COME ON SYKES DO THE BASICS RIGHT SO THE OWNER AND CUSTOMERS CAN GET A REAL FEEL FOR THIS LOVELY COTTAGE
"A great experience after a last minute booking."
Cottage was lovely, in a great location and owner Kieth is very friendly and helpful. Great scenery to enjoy even without leaving the cottage. The working farm feature is something we’ve never experienced before and it was an amazing addition for us because we have school aged children. Would really like to return to Penrose cottage soon to re live the great experience.
"We had a great short break at Penrose cottage."
The cottage is spacious, well equiped with easy parking. There is a lovely garden with fantastic views and the country setting is very quiet and peaceful but with Abergavenny only a 15 minute drive away.
"Just What We Wanted, accommodation was wonderful and hosts very helpful ."
"Very comfortable 3 bedrooms , all en-suite, well heated cottage with a beautiful view from the conservatory."
The cottage is near / opposite to the owner’s dwelling , could be convenient , blinds and curtains down to keep privacy on this side of the house. Very warm and clean with a good kitchen. Thank you ..
"A lovely cottage in a wonderful position with sensational views of the Brecon Beacons."
The owner Keith could not have been more helpful and friendly. We had a long weekend here in mid-November and it was ideal for a family and friends get together. I would highly recommend staying at Penrose Cottage, particularly, if like us, one of the part is in a wheelchair
"Lovely and relaxing despite uk weather."
Going again at Christmas . can"t get too much of a good thing
"Wonderful accommodation and a fantastic welcome from the landlord and his family ."
We could not have asked for better. We enjoyed a peaceful and relaxing holiday with plenty of local things to see and do. I have enjoyed all the holidays we have booked with you. We have never felt we had to complain. And we also have always recommended you to friends and family.
"Great location and helpful host."
"Penrose Cottage is a wonderful place."
We were met with a warm and friendly welcome by the owners. The setting and cottage is idyllic. Great turning and parking for our very long people carrier. The views are absolutely spectacular. The cottage is very well equipped and everything is easy to use, the bedrooms are spacious, very comfortable and all en suite upstairs and having the downstairs bedroom and wet room made it work brilliantly for our daughter who has very complex needs. The owners were always on hand to offer any help and advise on places to visit and eating out. Nothing was too much trouble. The surrounding area has lots to offer to see and do. We had a fabulous week and intend to book again.
"This is a delightful, comfortable and homely cottage with amazing panoramic views of the Sugar Loaf and other Brecon Beacons."
Well appointed for anyone in a wheelchair, along with others. There is a wonderful conservatory where you can sit and enjoy the views whatever the weather, also a lovely bench in a sort of shelter in the garden, and a picnic table too. The beds are very comfortable and the property is well-equipped. A few minor things - many of the drawer handles on bedside drawers seemed to have come off; the latch to the bedroom door could also do with repairing (or a door wedge / door stop be provided) because if you have the window open at night the door gusts open and shut despite the small piece of cord to hold it in place. But overall it is lovely, and owned and run by a delightful couple! Thank you...
"Penrose Cottage is in an idyllic setting in the hills in Brecon Beacons Park."
The all-round views from the large and pleasant garden are to die for. We were warmly welcomed on arrival and soon settled in. Breakfast in the new conservatory became an enjoyable routine and Keith was always ready to chat and relate stories of local history and recommend places to visit. We did not do much sightseeing because the peaceful garden was so tempting but we did enjoy a “last night” meal at The Lamb and Flag – again, recommended by Keith. Altogether a really good week. Thank you Keith and Diane.
"Proper disabled facilities, beautiful countryside, lovely friendly owners."
felt like a comfy home to holiday in, will be going back.
"We hugely appreciated the well adapted bathroom-many cottages just call themselves'wheelchair friendly' and leave it at that ,but the thoughtful and sensible adaptations made the holiday easy for us instead of a struggle."
Thanks especially to Keith and Diane who made us welcome and were a helpful presence if needed. We enjoyed the beautiful surroundings and would have been quite happy to spend the whole time in the garden enjoying the view!
"Mr and Mrs Embrey are a lovely couple- genuinely caring people who made us feel totally at home."
The house is spotless and very comfortable. It is in a very peaceful location, with only the sound of birdsong and lambs baaing, and wonderful views. It is very convenient for walking on Gilwern and Blorenge mountains, and there are sustrans cycle routes all around. The wifi works perfectly, and there is easy access to supermarkets in Abergavenny, so the house combined rural tranquillity with modern conveniences. We`re just looking to when it is available again!
"Clean and comfortable house with friendly and very helpful owner."
"We stayed for a weekend and really enjoyed our stay."
The cottage is well equipped, comfortable and spacious. There's great views and the owner lives next door, who was very friendly.
"We had 2 nights ,3 family and we realy joined."

"Lovely comfortable cottage, fully equipped with everything needed - very much a home from home."
The owner is very friendly and helpful and has a wealth of knowledge about the surrounding area. The views of the Brecon Beacons from the cottage's garden are stunning! We will happily return to this cottage for future holidays.
"Very warm welcome on arrival."
The views are outstanding especially when there is fog in the valley below with sunshine on the rest of it. Very good position to explore the Brecon's and good road links to other towns and villages.
"The cottage was in a perfect setting with the most amazing views."
It was ideal for the six of us, particularly as we all had en suite bathrooms. The owners were lovely, very helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. Our holiday at Penrose Cottage was just perfect. Thank you.
"We enjoyed our holiday at penrose cottage, it had everything we needed and the views were amazing, Keith and his wife were lovely and there if we needed anything, i would recommend to any one going to wales to book penrose cottage as its a lovely little house and central to things we wanted to go and visit, i would definitely stay there again and recommend to family and friends."
"This is our third visit to Penrose Cottage - the first in summer time as we normally visit in the Autumn."
The cottage lends itself to all seasons, cosy dark evenings inside and eating outside in the garden with it's beautiful views in the warmer weather. Keith and Diane are great hosts and do everything possible to ensure that their guests have the best holiday possible. We will return.
"The cottage was by far the best we have stayed in, perfect in every way."
Finding a cottage and booking with sykes was really easy the web site again is the best I have used to book accommodation.
"Just very enjoyable and relaxing."
"Great location lovely views ; late checkout was very welcome friendly host"
"Excellent weeks stay."
Lovely locations and excellent wheelchair accessible and great wet-room. Lovely welcoming hosts.
"Cottage was 5 star."
"Just fabulous cottage."
Looked after by owners Keith and Diane. Stunning views and plenty of wildlife.
Very quiet and warm. Ideal for total relaxation. Hosts are extremely friendly and helpful.
"Keith and Diane are extremely welcoming hosts."
The cottage is ideally located for visiting the many attractions and beauty spots nearby; the cottage is a very relaxing base to return to after a busy day out. The cottage was spotless and extremely well equipped and the children enjoyed the company of the sheep next door! Keith was a fount of knowledge regarding the local area and even led us on a walk with trainee sheep dog Glen! We certainly plan to return!
"I've booked with Sykes before, so I knew what to expect!"
The cottage is lovely, and ideally placed to explore the local area.
"Firstly the hosts Keith and Diane were absolutely brilliant, they helped us with everything we needed and went the extra mile to ensure we had everything we needed for our stay."
The property itself was fairly well equipped, bathrooms were to a high standard and the kitchen was nice and clean on arrival. The private garden was safe for children as it is guarded by shrubbery and fencing on all sides. Keith even took us to feed his horses and his sheep, dogs and ducks were extremely excited to see us! The views of sugar loaf mountain and other local mountains and the valley containing Abergavenny were fantastic and very serene watching the sun rise. The farm is located on a small narrow lane but this is just off an easy to reach dual carriageway with good access by car to local towns and shops, so although you get the peace and quiet, you are only 10-15mins away from everything you need (not in the middle of nowhere like some cottages). Will definitely book again one day! What would be a bonus: a working DVD player, TV in main lounge with more connections to add hard drive to watch movies etc, and possibly wifi but these are small gripes.
"Couldn't fault it!"
Very kind hosts who went out of their way to make sure that we had a good holiday. Would recommend this cottage to anybody, especially wheelchair users.
