  • "Even though we only stayed for two nights, we had a very comfortable and relaxing time and would recommend the property to anyone wishing to visit Richmond and the rest of North Yorkshire."

  • "We couldn’t have chosen a better property, a well appointed, cosy cottage, with lots of room for the three of us and for more, had we needed it."

There were clear instructions about access and shortly after arrival were welcomed by Anne, who had provided us with gifts of wine, cakes, flowers and basic pantry items. A very kind gesture. The farm overlooked beautiful countryside, a 5 minute drive from bustling Richmond and a good centre from which to tour the quiet country roads and Yorkshire tourist sites. A perfect spot both for relaxation and adventure! We would love to return.

We love the beautiful location with plenty of places to explore and visit nearby. Our kids love being on the farm and seeing the animals. There were some treats on our arrival - sweet, wine and coffee - which were much appreciated! We will definitely book again.

  • "We love this holiday let, and had a great break ."

The only "fly in the ointment " which troubled us was Sykes' statement that " Guests - you are not permitted to invite guests back to the property". Last time we invited close friends to spend a night with us in the Cartshed , and they loved it too!. Is this a legacy of Covid restrictions ?. Next time we will name potential guests if that is what is required , because the price doesn't drop because of under-occupancy .

Beautiful location ideally located for Dales, North Pennines AONB and Teesside towns. (The irony of a rural holiday is that we couldn't get internet in the cottage, as there was a local mast issue, and as business owners we still needed to be available to our teams, so big plus for the local farm shop, Mainsgill Farm Shop for great pies, coffee and wifi).

You were free to explore the small farm and garden and there was excellent car parking and a sunny spot to sit and enjoy a coffee or glass of wine. It was on the edge of beautiful countryside but less than 10 minutes from Richmond centre and thus provided the best of both worlds.

Having a few rainy days we decided to stay in and have a relaxing time which was great as we don't often have the opportunity to do this and with not problem at all. The goodies which were left for us on arrival were delicious and didn't last long, but we bought some bacon to go with the eggs for breakfast next day. We were impressed with Richmond - so much going on. There were also some extremely good eating places around - our favourites within three miles of the cottage - the White Swan at Gilling West and the Shoulder of Mutton in Middleton Tyas. About the location

GILLING WEST

Richmond 3 miles; Barnard Castle 11 miles.

The attractive and peaceful Dales village of Gilling West, winner of the "Yorkshire in Bloom" award, is situated in lovely rolling countryside just a few miles to the north of the popular market town of Richmond. The village itself has a lovely old church, two real ale pubs both serving food. There are footpaths and bridleways in every direction and fishing is available nearby. Nearby Richmond grew up around its castle, famously situated high above the River Swale, with panoramic views of the river. Today there are wonderful walks to be enjoyed such as the Castle Walk - a dramatic terrace walk beneath the castle walls - or alternatively walk alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls to enjoy. Within the town, narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled Market Place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers’ market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. The Georgian Theatre is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the country with visitors enjoying its regular productions all year round. An ideal location for exploring all of Swaledale, Teesdale and the Yorkshire Dales.
