If you are looking for a quiet nature retreat with abundant beauty and wonder around, and to be away from the hustle bustle of big cities, this place will exceed your expectations --- no matter how high. They have a lovely farm, and have found the nicest spot overlooking fields for this amazing cottage, with 180 degree expansive views of the sky and the land. This palace is perfect for star gazing, and for sitting on the deck or in the garden, and enjoying the stunning views. Just stepping outside your cottage, you will see birds, sheep, Helen’s lovely horse grazing in the field beside, hedgehogs in the garden. The cottage is designed with extreme attention to detail --- beautiful interiors with muted greens and greys, a *very* comfortable bed and duvet which feels like sleeping wrapped in marshmallow, and everything you might need during your stay. Everything in the cottage is extremely high quality and thoughtfully curated. The small selection of books is great for stoking your curiosity about the area ---- walking trails, flora and fauna of the area, night sky, and fossils! You have the huge field all to yourself, and a lovely spherical fire pit outside, where you can fire roast your food at night! You can reach the town shops in an easy 20 min walk with beautiful views and the river Tee (where you can find walking trails and many quiet places and pools of water which you can sit beside, and also fossils! The most stunning feature of the area --- Kirkcarrien --- a hill with lovely views of the area around, can be reached in a ~18 mins walk from the cottage. It has a small enclosure with pine forest and the most stunning views --- particularly at sunset. You can see birds flying below you in the evening and lose yourself in the tranquility of this place. Bernard castle, the biggest town nearby, is a 25 min drive and you can get a taxi for 40 quid. There are lovely woodlands and walks to explore in this area, as well as the castle. Helen and Mark are incredibly amazing, as hosts, and people. Both of them seem excellent at gauging what you need and providing you the best possible experience. Evey evening Mark or Helen, sometimes accompanied by their lovely dog Bee, would come around with fire wood, to kindle a fire, in the amazing fire pit next to the cottage. Given my interest in star gazing and spotting animals and birds, Mark made it a point to highlight the unique stars and constellations that were visible on clear nights during my stay, and point out the various birds and animals around. He knows their behaviour, their mannerisms, as well as their scientific names. I stayed at the cottage for almost 2 weeks and found myself extremely comfortable with Helen and Mark from day 1. They are generous with their time and their investment in making sure you have a lovely time is very obvious. They give you all the privacy and are very responsive to queries over texts / emails, and very happy to help in any way. I felt at home and have never felt as welcomed in a place. I usually don’t write reviews, but this one comes straight from the heart. This cottage is a product of love, and you will have a lovely time staying here. You can take a 2.5 hour train from London to darlington, and from there their cottage is a 40 min car ride (60 quid) away, or you can take the buses. I highly recommend you go to this part of the country, and stay with Helen and Mark in their slice of heaven.
