  • "Loved it. Such a beautiful location."

Easy enough to get to all the mountains and beaches. But well away from the tourist trail Lovely walks and cycles near by. Will be back

  • "Wonderful location, great for exploring the amazing sights mid/north Wales has to offer."

Comfortable cottage with a beautiful river literally on the doorstep. The fire was so welcoming on cold evenings (they sell some reasonably priced firewood at the local garage). Camlan farm shop just up the road were great for bits and bobs too. The contact we had was really helpful when the river got a little close for comfort, as were the neighbours who were lovely and reassured us we would be fine and we were. Nothing major but the only thing that would have improved our stay was an extra tea towel, some oven gloves and some new pots and pans.

Thanks for the lovely comments. All of the minor issues you mention have been resolved. Property Owner

  • "Fabulous character cottage in a stunning location!"

We LOVED this cottage and the river outside. We spent much of our weekend on a window seat gazing outside. Being February the water was fast flowing and noisy and we saw the river rise a few feet overnight and enjoyed the changing scene. The cottage was clean and welcoming, and we soon lit the fire and made it cosy. More wood would have been nice but we had brought plenty with us. The bed was really comfy with clean white bedding which is alway appreciated. Outside space limited but that’s obviously due to the river right by the cottage, and it’s on a lovely quiet lane to walk your dogs and the local pub is dog friendly too. We were sad to leave and would love to return and see the stunning scenery in different seasons.

Thanks Richard, it is great to hear that you had a good time. Please come back and visit again, the scenery is wonderful at any time of year, and changes daily as the river levels alter. Property Owner

  • "We have had an amazing time!"

! The weather has been very generous given that we are Jan/Feb. Aswell as exploring everything possible local on foot, we have also put quite a few miles on the car and taken in the amazing views that Wales has to offer!! Our 4 year old son asked if we could live here . The house is amazing and the scenery is to die for. We have loved the pheasants and sheep (we have explored the river a lot and have found a lot of small bones and skulls - what could this be?)

Thanks Tom and family, lovely comments and very much appreciated. It would be great to welcome you back again in the summer. Property Owner

  • "Great get away cottage."

If you are looking for a quite, peaceful break in a remote, quite spectacular location, then this is for you. The cottage is set next to a cascading river so wildlife is everywhere, dippers, pheasants, red kites, buzzards, herons..etc. There is a road straight infront of the main entrance and in summer I can image this could be a problem if you have dogs, we stayed there in November so only 1 or 2 vehicles per day. Also there are 1000's of pheasants EVERYWHERE, so dogs must be on leads around the cottage. There isn't much to do locally, the Brigands pub and small garage are 10mins walk, so you do need to travel for food if required. The logs and kindle for the fire are very expensive locally so take your own if needed. I would recommend Barmouth and Lake Vyrnwy waterfall for days out. The cottage could do with new bedding, leak in bathroom fixing and a dusting of cobwebs....that's just a personal preference, other people may not see these as necessary. Communication with the property owner was 1st class when we did need assistance, thankyou. All in all an enjoyable, if not rainy, experience which I would recommend. Dean & Judith

Thanks Dean, Glad you had a good time. The lane never gets busy but due to the abundance of wildlife we do always recommend that Dogs are kept on a lead. There are other amazing places nearby and we are always happy to share our recommendations. We have just changed cleaning companies and so hope we will be back to our normal high standards again. Found oven very difficult to work , also washing machine had been left with a large number of wet smelly towels

Sorry Brenda, the changes to check in and out times are a direct result of covid advice and we will go back to our normal times as soon possible. We have replaced the oven since your visit and changed cleaning companies and we hope that we can return to our normal very high standards as a result. Property Owner

  • "First impressions of Pen y Bont cottage is a lovely, charming cottage in beautiful surroundings, but when you settle in, you realise it is very tired and has not been very well maintained."

As you walk in the kitchen the door catches the open flap of the fuse box. I tried to shut it but it wouldn`t stay shut. In fact the whole box was very loose and in danger of falling off. The cooker, (which was different to the one in the photograph) had a burner which only gave a limp yellow flame. The duvet covers were of flannelette (again, not the ones in the photograph, which are white) and of a red, pink and an off-white striped pattern, which didn`t give you much confidence of the cleanliness of them, and when we removed the covers and pillow cases at the end of our stay to aid the cleaners, we were horrified to find that the duvets and pillows were covered in large brown stains, and obviously hadn`t been washed for a while. A pity, because Pen y Bont could be a perfect holiday getaway with some TLC, and these simple to fix things let it down badly.

We are sorry we did not meet your expectations on this occasion, but thanks for your useful feedback. All of your comments have now been addressed. We have replaced the oven, dishwasher and fuseboard since your visit and, as have now changed our cleaning company, we are sure that if you were to visit again your lasting impressions would be as good as your first. The cottage itself was well equipped for a comfortable stay. However I would like to say that our 1st evening there enjoying the lovely cosy atmosphere of the log fire, we had night time visitor a small bat appeared and started flying around the lounge totally unexpected. However overall out of the 7 nights of our stay only 2 were bat free. Our last night was completely ruined by a total of 3 flying around in the lounge so we were unable to enjoy the cosy fire and ended up spending the entire evening in the kitchen which we were not happy about. Apparently people had mentioned seeing bats in the visitors book.

We came for our honeymoon and I couldn't recommend it enough. The property is immaculate, not a speck of dust anywhere and is extremely well equipped. The owners leave a folder with all the information you could possibly need for your stay. The views from the cottage are surreal. To wake up, and go to sleep to the sound of the river is lovely. We met bats, we saw an otter and we're inundated with views of pheasants. This place is magical and we've already booked to come back.

  • "Cottage in nice position but as a small side road the amount of traffic was unbelievable and the speed they travel was the same, there is no garden only the deck and its NOT safe to have your dog off the lead !"

!! then there is the walkers bus loads of them you cant sit out to be quite as they walk past the deck every few minutes and to make things worse they stand at the side of the deck to take pictures of the waterfall someone even sat by the river in front of us !!.Cottage suffers from lots of cob webs which wouldn't take long to sort,i know older places get cobwebs but not to the extent of these in the house other parts could do with some tlc which is a shame, final comment the bathroom is down stairs which could mean up and down for a lot of people during the night, but wont be a cottage for us to go back to.

Thanks Iain, unfortunately the main road was closed during your stay which sent more local traffic down the lane, which is normally very quiet. The property description makes it clear that dogs and children should be supervised due to the unfenced river, which, due to the stunning views, cause walkers to stop to take a look too. Most are very envious that our guests get to wake up to that view! Property Owner

Wildlife in abundance with pheasants, bats, red kites and mink. Due to the really hot weather the spring that feeds the water supply had dried up and we had to switch to the bore pump, an interesting twist. The locals are very friendly and always stop for a chat. The RAF enjoy their low fly pasts which can be a bit noisy but a fantastic sight to see. Local beaches at Barmouth and Aberdovey are well worth a visit. Overall a lovely relaxing holiday

The balcony is a great add on but isn't very private as there are a lot of walkers who stop there to take pictures which isn't ideal when your sitting down to eat. We took our dog and on the first day she nearly got hit by a car that came zooming up the lane, thank God she was on her lead and I managed to drag her onto the verge. That made me very nervous as the front door is the only door on the cottage and is directly off the lane. There was road works going on in the area so maybe the lane was busier than usual. The views are spectacular and the Fox pub was great for food and drinks. Lots of great walks and the beaches are lovely.

It was a stunning cottage both inside and out and if I could I would buy it and live there. The 1st thing I would change though is the shower. it is awful. I am a fan of a shower especially after long walks in the beautiful countryside. My only negative was the shower so if you are looking to stay there, then prepare for either freezing cold dribble or scolding hot dribble. other than that, I would certainly stay there again and recommend.

    B) We used the maps in the drawer for walking, but found that they really are out of date: on one the promised footbridge had obviously been gone for years, and the river was too high to wade across at this time of the year. On another walk we found it extremely difficult to fight our way through high gorse and bramble, or even to see where the path might be. It cannot have been used for ages. We have marked this on the maps in the drawer.

Also due to the water supply coming from a spring lots of condensation in the bathroom, but no heat source to help evaporate some of the water. Shouldn't have to get wet feet when using the bathroom. Also a heater in the bathroom would make it more comfortable when getting out of a warm shower.
