"Well what`s not to like, an earlier review said they did not like the dark furniture, this adds character to the cottage, done out very tastefully, what you want when on holiday after a cold winters day ( we had snow and heavy rain) is to come back to a warm cosy cottage and this place ticks all the boxes, The owner has the shop next door so any problems he is there for you, great for shopping for emergencies as well."
The cottage is super quiet at night, lovely kitchen, bathroom huge and both bedrooms are a great size, plenty of parking when we were there, 3 or more pubs in the village which do food and are less than 10 mins walk away. Central location for many places to visit, we would return for sure.
"We have thoroughly enjoyed our week in this charming and cosy cottage."

We found the old world charm as discribed not to our liking T o much old heavy furniture lighting quite dull except bathroom Four people would be cramped Parking could be a problem at school pick up times Nice welcome from owners & nice welcome pack Heating worked well cottage warm
"This is the first time I’ve visited the Peak District and I couldn’t have picked a better cottage in terms of location, cleanliness and cosy ness."
The cottage had everything I needed for a very comfortable and peaceful stay. The parking was never an issue the whole week I was there. The cottage was in perfect location to Chatsworth House, Eyam and Bakewell. I will no doubt be booking to come visit this area again and will recommend this cottage to others. Thank you!
"A most enjoyable stay."
Very comfortable bed and good shower. It was lovely to have a garden to sit in when we returned home each evening. We parked easily on the road a few yards away. Great location to walk out from each day and for access to superb restaurants.
"Lovely cottage in a really excellent location to discover and enjoy the Peak District."
Lots of great walks nearby. The owners were very helpful with several different issues before, during and after the holiday. The cottage is very comfortable, but if you are self-catering for 4 people, it might be helpful to know that there is only a very small under-counter fridge (with freezer compartment), so you have to shop regularly. This is not too much of a problem, with the cottage owners' Spar next door and a Co-op down the road, but you can't stock up for the week. Also, it is a squeeze sitting 4 adults at the kitchen table - two are trapped in by the others and the kitchen units. Not ideal if you get claustrophobic. Those were minor issues though - we had a great holiday overall.
"A lovely cottage, very clean and comfortable."
Ideally situated for walks, some directly from the cottage, others starting a short drive from the cottage. Also close to Chatsworth and Bakewell. Would definitely recommend and hope to return.
"Everything as described."
"Beautifully decorated and very comfortable cottage in a fantastic location with great walking from the doorstop."
Having the little shop next door for excellent bread and local produce was a real bonus. We loved every minute of our stay.
"A lovely cottage next to the village shop."
Comfortable and in an excellent location, with walks straight out of the door up onto Baslow Edge (wonderful views along the Derwent Valley) and down the hill into the Chatsworth Estate. Friendly and helpful owners, who have provided a fascinating history of the cottage in the visitors' guide. (....and the old wardrobe in the 2nd bedroom is so big you half expect to find fur coats at the front and the way into Narnia further back!)
"On arrival we were overjoyed with the cottage, so cozy yet the rooms were a great size."
The owners made us very welcome and the cottage provided everything you could need for your stay. Parking was never an issue for our weeks stay! We had lovely walks from our doorstep, in such a pretty location with great pubs to visit too - what more could you want!
"Cottage did “what was said on the tin”…."
Very nicely decorated and had all you need for a short break….and within walking distance of the Chatsworth estate. Parking wasn’t a problem…unloaded outside the cottage and parked up within 50m.
"Beautiful cottage and exactly as the pictures showed."
It was the second time we have stayed there and am looking forward to the third time. Lovely owners also at the Post Office Spar shop next door.
"Well equiped and snug cottage perfectly situated for visiting Chatsworth and surroundings."
As stated in description no dedicated parking but we booked for 2 weeks and never had any problems. The very welcoming owner has the shop next door too, ideal for essentials and local goods. This was our third stay and hopefully we'll be back next year.
"Clean, comfortable and cozy cottage situated in the heart of Baslow with easy access to lots of lovely walks in the surrounding area."
"Needs to highlight no guaranteed parking, advert omits to say this, looking at photo you assume you can park in front of property or by shop or at side of cottage."
Had to jostle for a space every day across the road! There is a damp smell especially in kitchen, stairs are dangerously steep! The radiators upstairs did not heat up, even though turned up fully, setting on boiler( not thermostat,) had to be altered we discovered this by Wednesday, so for 3 nights were cold. We were only informed to control heat on thermostat. Must have been on summer setting.( Could be why previous visitors left early) The cottage is small, could do with a bit more tlc on paintwork, however it is central for places like Chatsworth/Bakewell a positive point.
Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. Our advert is very clear in that parking is roadside only; we cannot control the cars that park during your stay I'm afraid. As this is a lovely, traditional cottage, the stairs are steeper than average which is why this is clear in our description for customers to be aware before booking. I'm sorry you had trouble with the heating, had we been made aware you were struggling with the thermostat or the temperature of the property then we would have been more than happy to help you resolve this to ensure the property was warm for you, however, to be clear, our previous guests did not leave early, they booked for a short break, stayed the full duration and, as far as we are aware, did not have any issues with the heating. Thank you for your feedback which is duly noted. Property Owner
"I booked this cottage for close friends who were visiting from abroad."
They loved it.
"A lovely clean, comfortable and peaceful cottage only a few minutes' walk from Chatsworth Park."
Ideally placed for visiting Bakewell and other places of interest in the Peak District. It was very handy having the owner's food shop next door to the Cottage who kindly left us wine, milk and cake as a welcome pack. They also sell locally delicious bread and rolls in the shop. Would highly recommend this cottage.
"A beautiful cottage fantastically placed for walks and exploring the Peak District."
From the warm welcome from the owner to the beautiful, clean and well-equipped cottage we could not have had a better base for our week in Derbyshire. The cottage was very well presented and had all of the little touches that make you feel welcomed and “at home”. A comfortable sitting room, a lovely kitchen, two comfortable bedrooms and a very impressive bathroom - with a roll-top bath and “formidable” shower! We really appreciated all of the additional “baby” facilities that were provided - especially the stair gate (thank you). Certainly a family-friendly cottage (with family-friendly hosts). The courtyard garden (at the front) was also perfect for a leisurely breakfast in the warm weather! The cottage is perfectly located for walks/runs through the Chatsworth Estate (7mins walk away) or walks up the hill to Baslow / Curbar Edge with spectacular views (especially at sunrise / sunset). Bakewell, Hassop Station (and the Monsal Trail) and Padley Gorge were all within a very short drive (10mins) and Derwent Lake, Mam Tor and Dovedale are not much further. A perfect cottage for enjoying walks, runs or cycling in the Peak District… Thank you :-)
"Beautiful little cottage located in a lovely quaint village."
Has everything you need, beds very comfortable, couldn’t fault it. Plenty to see and do in the area would definitely recommend it.
"A beautiful cottage with very good facilities in an excellent location."
Such welcoming owners and their shop next door was well supplied with local produce. The welcome pack was much appreciated ( especially the bottle of red wine ) !
"Clematis cottage is oozing with charm and is matched by its fantastic location."
We would come back in a heartbeat. Thank you to our hosts for the very warm welcome!
"This is my 6th if not 7th Spring in the lively Clematis Cottage in its idyllic surroundings that I look forward to enjoy every year - so guess that speaks for itself."
I can’t fault it; just live it ❤️❤️❤️
"A warm cosy cottage perfect for a visit to the Chatsworth House and for enjoying walks in the surrounding countryside."
"A super wee cottage."
Excellent location and furnished to a high standard.
. lovely cottage, ideal for accessing local places of interest.
"The cottage was equipped with excellent quality furniture and fittings."
Owners are friendly and helpful, leaving food gifts to welcome us. Ideal location for visiting the great houses and attractions in the area, and a couple of excellent restaurants and pubs a mere 10 minutes walk away. A great stay in a cosy period cottage.
"Ideal situation for exploring the Peak District."
Small and compact cottage with easy access to Chatsworth, Monsal Trail, Bakewell etc.
"This is the fourth time I’ve enjoyed the cottage."
I just love ot and the village og Baslow and beautiful walks
"A warm and cosy cottage and surprisingly very spacious."
Everything was very clean so we felt very comfortable entering it especially due to the Covid 19 situation. A great spot to enjoy the local area whether it be for walking, cycling, touring or just relaxing. Owners are extremely friendly and welcoming and their shop next door is well supplied. What more do you want for a great stay ?
"Wonderful holiday , really enjoyed our stay in Clematis Cottage, very cosy and warm with good facilities."
We much appreciated the welcoming gift of wine, bread and milk and friendly greeting by the owner, Mr Upton.
"The cottage is well located and it is an advantage being adjacent to the village store which is well stocked."
It is small but cosy and the living area comfortable. For four, it is quite tight in the kitchen and it would have been helpful to have had a dishwasher, though I can see that space for one is an issue. The stairs are very steep - but this is mentioned in your description. A cottage full of charm and character and we loved the location.
"Wouod not book with Sykes again due to the way they handled our booking in light of Covid"
"We’ve stayed here nine times now."
The great thing about this cottage is that every time we visit there have been improvements made. The owners also keep the standards maintained by regular decorating and replacing items. The cottage is ideally placed for walking and for easy access to the chatsworth estate.
"Quirky, cosy cottage, special thanks to our hosts for being so accomodating."
The wine, bread and milk was very welcome. Had a lovely week despite the weather. The cottage is a real home from home equipped with everything you need, Plenty of books, games and dvd's. Chatsworth House is in walking distance and well worth a visit. Lots of places to eat in Baslow. Would recommend , hopefully we will back. A++++
"Such cosy welcome , cottage break really came across , lovely village ."
Peaceful but easy to travel the Peak areas . Thank you
"A lovely cottage with everything we needed."
Really appreciated the welcome package and having fresh bread in the morning from the shop next door. Visited with two children who really liked the cottage, especially the big bath! A fantastic base for visiting so many places. We particularly enjoyed walking to Chatsworth from Baslow.
"The cottage was straightforward to find, and a good base for exploring Derbyshire being relatively close to all main roads."
The cottage is linked to the village shop and post office (same owners), so during extended daytime hours there is always a helping hand nearby if required. We were given a tour of the cottage and how to light the gas stove, etc, on arrival. Also a welcome pack of bread, milk and wine which was appreciated. The cottage was plenty big enough for two adults and two children. The cottage is clean and well equipped, bedding was very comfortable, shower and bath were great, plenty of hot water. We didn't find the on-road parking an issue at all. There are a number of eateries (pubs/hotel/pizzeria) within a 10 minute walk, plus a Co-op in addition to the village shop/post office. We would recommend this property and would be happy to book again.
"Positives: very comfortable mattresses."
Generally very clean and tidy. Very well situated. However: no soap in bathroom on arrival which was not very welcoming. We left a bottle for the next family! The temperatures on the knobs on the cooker had all warn off which made it very difficult to cook meals and the shower mat was utterly filthy. Stairs were very steep and steps narrow. Large enough for two people but any more would be cramped. I would not return to this property but had an enjoyable holiday. Chatsworth Farm shop should be visited early in a holiday particularly if you want to spoil yourselves. The food they sell is delicious.
"The cottage was just what I wanted an old style of living with all the comforts of today."
I felt as though I had gone back in time it was lovely .
"Located in Baslow, the cottage is perfectly situated for walks to Chatsworth House, and very short journeys by car to Bakewell, Monsal Head and Viaduct, Eyam, Matlock to name but a few."
This is the 5th year of booking Clematis Cottage for myself and my mother and we ❤ it. As soon as we walk through the door, it feels like coming home. Clematis Cottage is impeccably decorated and furnished in keeping with the character of the property. David and Christine Upton are the proud owners of this cottage, and are always so kind and friendly.
"Had a great hols, so you can see why I gave the cottage full marks."
This is my third time at the lovely Clematis Cottage in stunning Derbyshire, this Spring time of the year it just looks divine; we can walk straight out from here on long walks; did drive further away a couple of days to meet up with other walker friends, but no real need. Thanks again Best regs Helle
"Nice cottage in a good location."
Nice welcome pack of wine, bread and milk
"Beautiful little cottage next to the village shop which was really handy but you really didn’t notice the shop otherwise."
Big enough for two adults and two teenagers. Cottage was very well equipped and very clean. Lovely village. I think if you were elderly you would find the stairs rather steep but for us it was absolutely fine. Thank you.
"Cottage was generally good and well located."
Full of character. Kitchen equipment and utensils could do with a refresh / replace. Oven needs testing as I don’t think it’s hitting the right temperature.
"Perfect, we loved it!"
Everything you could need, heaps of character and plenty to do in the local area.
"Lovely cottage in a lovely location."
have booked another stay there.
"The cottage as always, was very cosy and warm."
Every year the owners make improvements and additions to improve the customer experience. This cottage is very well situated for walking into the chatsworth park and is close to shops and restaurants. I would highly recommend.
"We had a lovely stay at Clematis Cottage."
The cottage had everything we could need and was perfectly located for the activities we wanted to do while we were there. We were greeted with a pack of tea cakes and a bottle of wine, which is a lovely touch and very welcome! The cottage is situated right next to the village shop and is owned by the family who run it, so there is always help if needed and is perfect for supplies if wanted. We ate at Rowley’s, Fischer’s Baslow Hall (a treat for our anniversary) and Il Lupino Ristorante, all of them are spitting distance from the cottage and highly recommended. The Lavendar Tea Rooms in Bakewell is a particular favourite that we’ve been to on previous visits. For those that like to stay in, there are DVDs and books galore (although we noted that a lot of freeview channels were not available). WiFi is good (the details are not in the welcome pack but are on the WiFi box itself). Reception is a little hit and miss upstairs but this is an old cottage so it did not bother us. The shower is not as good as the cottage details suggest. It was basic and satisfactory. There is a lovely roll top bath as well. The cottage is near a school but we were lucky with the parking as we were there during half term but I imagine it’s a little challenging if you try and park in the early morning or afternoon during term time. However this just requires a little bit of planning around, and common sense) and it would be absolutely fine. We would definitely return to Clematis Cottage and look forward to doing so in the New Year.
"We brought a friend with us who had spent a lot of time in the area."
Sadly her husband has passed away and this was a trip down memory lane which she so enjoyed it. The cottage was ideal for walking to Chatsworth House.
"Genuinely homely and characterful cottage."
Owners very welcoming and availabile (in shop next door) but totally non-intrusive. Great location with walks from house and good eating options on foot. Stairs challenging for mobility-impaired (can’t remember if this was flagged but if not, would be worth doing so). New bedding would improve comfort and update ‘feel’ a little.
"An absolutely lovely property in a beautiful part of the world."
Would definitely recommend both the property and Sykes Cottages. Many thanks.
"Lovely weekend with friends."
Great location as we could walk to Chatsworth House, Nice pubs and restaurants
"Lovely cottage in perfect location for visiting Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall ."
Situated in a pretty village and a short drive to Bakewell . Will certainly book again .
"It provided an excellent opportunity to share a beautiful cottage with old friends and we wrote some positive comments in the Owner's Visitors Book."
"Great little cottage in a lovely location just a short walk to Chatsworth house."
Cottage is spotlessly clean, super comfortable and really cosy of an evening. Perfect for a family or a get away with loved ones. We wished we could have stayed longer.
"Absolutely loved the cottage; it was cosy, very tastefully furnished and stylish decorated to suit a cottage."
Will definitely return and recommend to others.
"We had a great weekend at Clematis cottage, it's in a good location for walking into Chatsworth or the edges."
The owners were very helpful. We will book the cottage again.
"This is the second time i have stayed at this cottage."
It is a lovely cosy cottage in an excellent location. I will book to stay again. A real gem.
"A lovely cottage ideally placed for Chatsworth and surrounding districts."
On road parking but we didn't find any issues finding a space close to the property. Would benefit from Wifi.
"The cottage was extremely comfortable and the amenities provided were excellent, the location was very convenient for walking to Chatsworth House and also visiting other towns and villages in the Peak District."
We felt it was our very own "Escape to the Country".

Character, charm and an ideal location - this cottage makes a perfect Peak District holiday base.
About the location
Chatsworth 1 mile; Bakewell 5 miles.
The pretty village of Baslow lies at the north end of stately Chatsworth House - home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. The village has many unusual and picturesque features including a triple-arched river bridge guarded by a toll house whose doorway is only 3 1/2 feet high! Baslow offers a range of village amenities including shops, pubs and restaurants. Close by is Bakewell, the capital of the Peak District, and home of the famous Bakewell pudding (definitely not tart!), still made locally to an old and secret recipe. Bakewell is at the scenic heart of the Peak District, and with Alton Towers also within easy touring distance, there is plenty for the whole family to enjoy.
