  • "Insufficient instructions on eg heating."

Many doors and windows difficult to open or close. Lights not working in one bedroom. Parking only possible with cooperation of neighbours. Several windows cracked. On the plus side we'll equipped, roomy and comfortable. Shame really, so many little niggles, could be so much better.

As per previous reviews, parking outside the cottage is problematic more so if travelling with disabled people, as not wide enough for two small cars. The door lock still requires attention as hard to lock when leaving the premises. Overall, well appointed property and highly recommended.

  • "No complaints, very comfy property."

Had there been a couple of throws/blankets in the lounge we wouldn’t have used the fire to warm the room in the evenings. Also the front door lock was a little temperamental-sometimes when you turned the key it didn’t lock and sometimes it locked but was tricky to unlock. Generally ok but just a warning that it might need looking at.

  • "The big issue is parking."

The Bulls Head is listed on the website, and in the visitor information book in the cottage, as somewhere to park, and to leave keys. However, when we left our car there, and notified a member of staff as a matter of courtesy, they were not happy. We didn’t understand why until we spoke to the owner who confirmed they no longer own the pub. There is space for two cars outside the cottage but only by blocking one car in; we had to discuss with the people next door when they would be coming and going and, as they were there first, we moved our car to accommodate them. It is almost impossible to park in the village at weekends as it is so busy. The gas fire doesn’t work (waiting for parts) but the central heating is efficient. On a positive note, the cottage is spacious, comfortable and clean; the shower is powerful, the bed extremely comfortable and there was a plentiful supply of dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, tea towels etc.

Thank you for your feedback. Our apologies, we no longer own the pub so the parking is not available here, thank you for pointing this out as we needed to update this in our visitor information. We have a parking space that's available for use left of the patio doors. We are sorry to hear that you had issues, the parking space should be sufficient for a normal size car, those with bigger vehicle's may struggle. We are glad to know you enjoyed your stay overall. Kind regards, Property Owner

  • "We had a fantastic stay at Laburnum Cottage."

The location was excellent (Cave Dale and Peveril Castle are right behind the property), and the cottage was larger than expected! It had everything you could need, the nights were quiet, and the bed super comfy. We did not try and use the parking space as it looked very tight with the next door neighbours car there too, but parking was available across the street so this was no problem at all.

  • "Great cottage in a great location."

Had everything we needed. Welcome pack was very nice. Two negatives: car parking is tight (we ended up leaving our car at The Bull's Head); and locking the front door can be a bit fiddly (until you get the knack!) Both minor things though; overall very good.

  • "Would never recommend Sykes, they increased the price of the cottage with 65% (£389) after we had to rescedule because of covid."

+ Laburnum cottage is a very nice, spacious property in a wonderful location. The beds are comfortable, so are the sofa's. - No refresh of towels for 2nd part of week. Front door difficult to close, remains that way also after feedback from others. Bathroom/bedrooms could have more facilities for towels to dry (we were with 4 persons). Outside furniture: 2 chairs for 4 persons is strange!

  • "Delightful property."

Ideally situated for access to the centre of town and local sights. Very clean and well equipped. One drawback is the parking. If parked outside cottage you block in next door cottage's car. We parked in Bull hotel car park instead just a couple of hundred yards away. Kitchen has a vast 6 ring range cooker but we only ever managed to light 3 of them simultaneously!

The welcome basket on our arrival was a lovely surprise and much appreciated. Had a problem initially, locking the door but was sorted by contacting the owner. The shared parking to the front of the property is a bit tight I had to park very close to the cottage wall to enable our neighbours to get their car in but we managed. Had a great time would certainly recommend the cottage and look forward to coming back in the future.

  • "A beautiful cottage in the heart of the village."

All the furnishings and contents were of a high quality and we were very comfortable and cozy. There was an issue with opening the kitchen door from the outside but I did eventually get the knack! I would mention that it is a gas fire and not electric in the living room and it would be very awkward to get 2 cars parked directly outside the cottage - we used the carpark at The Bull’s Head. - all minor issues which didn’t detract from a relaxing stay.

  • "We have stayed here before at both cottages."

They are in a great area for walking, so much around. Great selection of pubs if you want to eat out or socialise lots. On this occasion we were happy to cook and stay away from lots of people. Ample shops for gorgeous fresh bread, cakes and the staff are really friendly and welcoming which is great. The cottage is lovely and doing yoga looking out at the hills a great bonus. Appreciated the food hamper left for us, thank you very much made us smile. I can't think of much negative thoughts just 2 points. I personally could not lock the door from the outside as a problem with the lock. We did mention it and it was not sorted before we left so hope it mended soon. If my husband wasn't there although a safe village would not appreciate leaving it unlocked whilst out. We have always found the parking fine as we don't use the car all week so need to chat with other cottage. Have always found them nice and agreeable. Thanks for a great week Regards Janet and Steve

  • "Very spacious property with a brand new kitchen and bathroom."

Photo doesn’t show updated bathroom which is a shame because it has the wow factor. Set in the centre of Castleton within 2 minutes walking distance to cafes, shops and lovely cosy pubs. You can park in the Black Bull which is about a four minute walk away so no problems parking at all. Walking distance to Blue John Mines and Mam Tor. Had a lovely stay and would really recommend giving this property a try.

My only concern was when using the shower there was a leak that came through the living room ceiling. I contacted the owner to inform them of this immediately who undertook to have this checked by the housekeeping team. This is my reason for not giving the facilities the highest mark.

  • "The location of the cottage is great."

The welcome basket was also a nice touch. Many homely touches which made the stay even better. We parked at the pub, otherwise we would have blocked the other cottages parking space - but it was literally a 2 minute walk away from the cottage and always spaces there for residents so wasn’t a problem at all. Thank you very much for a very pleasant stay

But the following needed attention: 1. WC flush was not working well and was temperamental. 2. The Front Door lock was difficult to operate it from outside and needs WD40 or something 3. The floor tiles at the entrance of the door have come loose. 4. The freezer tucked under the staircase was occasionally noise for periods. Don’t display our name if you wish to publish this feedback. As has been mentioned in previous reviews, the kitchen could do with a little updating, but the rest of the cottage was lovely. Very comfortable and spacious with good quality linen and towels and a great shower. A welcome basket with eggs, milk, bread and shortbread was a nice gesture. From the cottage description, we were expecting there to be parking at the cottage. In reality, there are two cottages and only one parking space (unless you block each other in). Additional parking was available at the Bulls Head which wasn't a problem for us as it is only a few minutes walk away, but may not suit everyone.

The parking, and getting cars in and out was a little awkward, as it is in a small courtyard shared with another cottage. Our neighbours eventually decided to park elsewhere! That courtyard is also the only outdoor space for the cottage. The location (Castleton) is very attractive, and has good pubs, restaurants, tearooms etc., although facilities to buy groceries for self catering are quite limited. However, despite those few reservations, we would certainly visit again.
