The Sykes Cottages Guide To Wirksworth

As anyone visiting one of our holiday cottages in the area may know, Wirksworth is a busy local centre and one of the Peak District towns where ancient traditions are still observed to this day. Well dressing is kept alive during Whit week, whilst each September, the ritual of ‘clypping’ is observed, as townsfolk hold hands forming a chain around the local church. Maintaining such traditions is fitting for Wirksworth, which is one of the oldest of the Peak towns and as such boasts a long history. Its market charter was granted by Edward I in the fourteenth century and it was an important centre for mining and lead production, which brought the prosperity which enabled some of the many fine buildings still visible in the town today to be built. The town’s information and Heritage centre are housed in a former merchant’s yard just off the main square, and this is a useful starting point for the visitor.

The Peak District is famous for its ancient stones and minerals, and so it is appropriate to find the fascinating National Stone Centre here, at Wirksworth in Middleton, not far from Wirksworth village. The Centre makes for a great day out for those with or without children to learn about the history and importance of stone dating from hundreds of millions of years ago. The centre tells the story of stone; the science and history and its importance to the environment and ecology of the area, and visitors can try their hands at gem panning, fossil rubbing and a variety of fun activities and marvel at dinosaur eggs and ancient fossils from around the world.

Carsington Water is another popular visitor attraction close to Wirksworth. The reservoir is an outdoor centre with water sports, cycle hire and children’s playground. The visitor centre offers an informative exhibition into the role water plays in our daily lives and has a restaurant, craft and gift shop area, plus information on the walks and rides around the reservoir and how best to enjoy the surrounding countryside.
