Knill's Monument, Cornwall

Knill’s Monument

Sitting atop Worvas Hill, overlooking the sea at St Ives is Knill’s Monument. The 50-foot-high granite obelisk is the work of architect John Wood the Younger of Batheaston, designer of the Royal Crescent in Bath. Knill’s Monument was built in 1782 as a mausoleum and memorial for John Knill, a mayor of St Ives.

The monument was repaired in 2013 using the same materials used in the 18th century. John Knill also requested a ceremony take place every five years on St James the Apostle’s Day. The ceremony is still enacted here every five years.

The monument sits on a 40-acre woodland nature reserve, giving visitors plenty of walking options.

Enjoy a lovely day out at Knill’s Monument…
