Yarmouth Castle

This fascinating landmark enjoys panoramic views of the Solent on Yarmouth’s coast and is a must-see for any budding historian.

Yarmouth Castle came to be in 1547, during the final year of Henry VIII’s rule. It was the last to be built during a national coastal defence programme the monarch started in 1539.

The artillery fort’s design consists of a large square enclosure that’s flanked by a bastion and moat. There was a platform for guns and canons, along with a secret passage that led to a courtyard.

Yarmouth Castle saw a few key events during its time, including the Battle of the Solent. However, over time the artillery fort saw little use, and in 1885 the military gave it up to English Heritage.

These days, Yarmouth Castle’s platform is covered in grass and features replicas of its cannons. There’s also picnic seating available, so you can kick back and enjoy those views of the coast.

Unlock your inner historian with a visit to this historic fort…
