Cardigan is a place of quiet, unspoilt natural beauty on the Teifi estuary, with Cardigan Bay linking Pembrokeshire to the south and Ceredigion to the north. The town, a great place to visit on a cottage holiday, has a gentle charm, a thriving maritime centre with a rich cultural heritage. Cardigan Castle, an eleventh century stronghold, and the Cardigan Heritage Centre on the wharf, are obvious starting points for getting to grips with discovering this lovely town.
Take a boat trip out into the bay to see dolphins and porpoises, visit the many local artists’ galleries and studios not only in the town, where the shopping is refreshingly independent, but also in the outlying villages. There are many excellent walks and cycles around Cardigan. Most are coastal, but inland the Teifi valley offers particularly good mountain bike trails. Such is the natural beauty of the area that many popular attractions are dedicated to showcasing the rich diversity of flora, fauna and wildlife to be enjoyed here. Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park has it all; the spectacular scenery of a coastal island nature reserve with maritime flowers and dramatic cliffs, a hands-on family farm for children, as well as seals, dolphins and bird life in abundance. Teifi Marshes are a favoured haunt of bird spotters. This delightful reserve has a Visitor Centre and a gentle circular walk incorporating an otter trail, together with two additional woodland walks, which are ideal for all ages and abilities.
At Aberporth, step into the tropical hot house with a visit to the Felinwynt Rainforest and Butterfly Centre, or simply enjoy the superb sandy beach there, before trying the one at nearby Tresaith. The Teifi Valley Narrow Gauge Railway makes a pleasant day out for enthusiasts and families alike, with woodland walks and picnic sites in addition to the heritage locomotives on display. The Dyfed Shire and Leisure Farm offers the full farm experience, with activities extending to cover wet weather needs; farm, tractor/trailer rides, quad biking, bouncy castle, face painting, indoor play area and more – ideal for families.
