Hexham Cottages
Please find below a selection of self catering holiday cottages
to rent in Hexham, Northumberland.
First impressions really do count and Hexham's dramatic
medieval skyline gains top marks on a Hexham cottage holiday.
This is Hadrian's Wall country and this bustling market town
nestles amid glorious countryside in the Tyne Valley. Historically,
it comes up trumps and there are some interesting buildings to
explore and admire. In the centre is Hexham Abbey; today a parish
church, but once a place of worship for Benedictine monks. There
are also two medieval towers, an ancient Moot (or meeting) Hall and
the 14th Century Hexham Old Gaol - the latter a fascinating
experience for all the family, delving deep into the turbulent
medieval past.
Every Tuesday, Hexham's narrow streets are crammed with
shoppers visiting the market and there's also a regular
farmers' market selling top-quality local produce. Shops
include a collection of antiques and curio shops, together with a
couple of supermarkets.
An excellent leisure centre solves any rainy day issues, while
other entertainment comes in the form of parks, pubs, restaurants,
a cinema and the Queen's Hall Arts Centre - a fabulous venue
featuring drama, dance and European cinema.
But it's Hadrian's Wall that jostles for your attention,
a UNESCO World Heritage Site just a short drive away. Around eighty
miles long, you'll find some of its most remarkable parts close
to Hexham. Whether you're walking the Hadrian's Wall
National Trail Path, peddling along Hadrian's Cycleway, or
simply keen to unearth secrets from 2000 years ago in the forts,
temples and archaeological sites found in its path, a Hexham
cottage will make a welcome retreat every day.
