Just Show Me Caldbeck Cottages

Discover a lesser known side of the Lake District and stay in a Caldbeck holiday cottage in the magical Northern Fells.

Expect outstanding scenery and excellent walking. Take in the views atop Skiddaw and Blencathra, approached from the north along quieter paths. Enjoy exhilarating rambles across Carrock Fell and High Pike. The Cumbria Way also passes through Caldbeck, while the ever-popular Coast to Coast and Reivers Cycle Routes skirt close by. Don't miss the lovely short walk from just beyond the village duck pond up the Howk, a limestone gorge with waterfalls and ruins of an old bobbin mill. In fact, old mill buildings are a feature of Caldbeck, in particular Priest's Mill, which has been transformed into a visitor attraction offering shops, workshops and a riverside café serving homemade food.

As well as ducks, the conservation village of Caldbeck is home to cute and cuddly, free-range sheep and ponies grazing on the village green. There's also a 12th Century church, a traditional Lakeland inn and a fantastic general store that sells everything from everyday basics and regional produce (great for stocking the larder of your Caldbeck holiday home) to fuel for your car.

Neighbouring villages worth a visit and with good eating establishments include Hesket Newmarket (brewery and agricultural show in September), Uldale and Ireby (music festival). Otherwise opt for the bigger towns of Keswick, Penrith, Carlisle and Cockermouth, all about a 20-minute drive from your cottage in Caldbeck.
