It would have been nice to have been informed that the water heater was being replaced on our arrival day - this meant that effectively the cottage wasn't fully accessible until 17:15. However,we enjoyed our stay at the cottage and it met the description on the internet and in recent reviews. A few small things to consider are - the fridge will not hold a 4-pint milk container upright and it is impossible to stock the small fridge for the week which is important in that there is only one shop in the village which also has a half day closing. - a brush/mop would have been useful to clean the hardwood floor. - the electric fire in the lounge makes an horrendous noise for the first ten minutes, presumably until the fan gets up to speed. - the downlighter at the kitchen end of the lounge flickers intermittently However all of these points have been left on the feedback form in the cottage so probably some if not all of the points will be resolved by the owners and overall did not detract from our stay..

About the location

NEW ABBEY

Dumfries 5 miles.

The quiet village of New Abbey is dominated by the peak of Criffel, which at 570 metres, offers excellent walking and superb views over south western Scotland and the Lake District. The history of the village is represented in Sweetheart Abbey, a Cistercian abbey dating from 1273. A watermill makes an attractive backdrop for the village which has a shop, a coffee shop and two hotels. The River Nith runs nearby and offers excellent fishing. Dumfries lies 8 miles to the north. A market town and former royal burgh, Dumfries, nicknamed Queen of the South, dates from Roman times and is split into two by the River Nith running into the Solway Firth. With its many restaurants, bars, cafes and museums, as well as walking, biking and fishing in the nearby Galloway Hills and forests, there is something for everyone in this beautiful area of south west Scotland.
