    “Mrs”

My hubby and I have just spent 7 nights staying in Rosewall cottage and we found it to be perfect. It was very clean, comfortable, lovely and warm. There were things there I didn’t expect: a coffee machine with lots of coffee capsules, washing machine and detergent, eggs, milk, butter, bread and lovely biscuits, a smart tv, good internet. We spent the seven days walking and came back with our little border terrier rather worse for wear each day. The tiled entrance lobby was perfect for dog ...

The tiled entrance lobby was perfect for dog cleaning and dirty boot removal. Then either a lovely hot shower or bath. We shopped in Lidl Dumfries before we arrived and fed ourselves for the week. The pub in the village only feeds residents or if you’ve given him (Gerry) 24 hours notice. We only managed to get in the pub for a drink once, the rest of the time, when we passed, it was closed. Similarly the village shop isn’t open very long so check hours on the door before you run short of milk. In all fairness it was the middle of winter.

About the location

NEW ABBEY

Dumfries 5 miles.

The quiet village of New Abbey is dominated by the peak of Criffel, which at 570 metres, offers excellent walking and superb views over south western Scotland and the Lake District. The history of the village is represented in Sweetheart Abbey, a Cistercian abbey dating from 1273. A watermill makes an attractive backdrop for the village which has a shop, a coffee shop and two hotels. The River Nith runs nearby and offers excellent fishing. Dumfries lies 8 miles to the north. A market town and former royal burgh, Dumfries, nicknamed Queen of the South, dates from Roman times and is split into two by the River Nith running into the Solway Firth. With its many restaurants, bars, cafes and museums, as well as walking, biking and fishing in the nearby Galloway Hills and forests, there is something for everyone in this beautiful area of south west Scotland.
