Frequently Asked Questions about Lake District Holidays

What month is the best to visit the Lake District?

The Lake District National Park is the perfect destination to visit all year round with each season offering a different experience.

To get the best experience, we’d recommend visiting in May or June, when the weather is milder, the landscapes are blooming and green, and the trails are slightly quieter. The milder weather means you can uncover countless trails, designed to be explored as well as experience exciting activities including boating, watersports and rock climbing.

If you’re looking for an even quieter holiday, then we’d recommend visiting in September or October as autumn is creeping in and the colours of the lakes change from green to orange. You can still experience all the Lake District has to offer, just with a higher chance of rain. Although then you can look forward to cosying up in the warmth of your holiday cottage after a day of exploring.

How many days are enough for a holiday in the Lake District?

There’s so much to see and do in the Lake District! We’d recommend spending around 4 to 5 days exploring this wonderous national park. That allows plenty of time to experience unmissable attractions and landmarks including Lake Windermere, Rydal Mount, Grasmere as well as breathtaking walks up Tarn Hows, Latrigg Fell and Blencartha.

However, you can still experience the Lake District during a short break. A weekend or 2 to 3 days gives you a chance to make plenty of treasured memories with one of the iconic Lake towns as your base. Stay in Keswick to enjoy walks around the shores of Derwentwater, lose yourself in the past at the Keswick Museum and the Castlerigg Stone Circle.

Or stay in Bowness-on-Windermere. Here you can visit The World of Beatrix Potter, take to the water of Lake Windermere, explore countless walks including those to Orrest Head Viewpoint and visit the National Trust’s Hill Top.

What is the most beautiful part of the Lake District?

As the UK’s largest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Lake District is without a doubt home to some of the most beautiful places. In our opinion Grasmere tops that list. Surrounded by spectacular fells, home to its own lake and the muse of one of the most famous poets in the world, William Wordsworth, it’s truly a beautiful place.

Other contenders include the view across Wastwater, the deepest lake in the Lake District, the view across Lake Windermere from the top of Orrest Head and Buttermere Valley which is home to three idyllic lakes; Buttermere, Crummock Water and Loweswater.
