  • "Very happy with the inside, A lot of cobwebs along the inside of the bedroom curtain rail."

The photo used on the website is out dated, due to the maintenance of the grounds as the garden is very over grown. So we coud not park our car with difficulty in the allocated drive way, The entrance door way to the property, where the thatch edging above the door way is completely covered in a huge amounts of spider webs, as somebody who has a fear of spiders found this to be extremely concerning. So this did not give us very good 1st impressions from the outside. But from the inside of the property there was everything you would need for your stay.

All items in the cottage were of a good quality and comfortable. The cottage was clean and tidy. We especially enjoyed the homemade cake, tea and milk and picked flowers were a nice touch. If you want to get away from all the noise this is the perfect place to stay.

Beautiful cottage & surroundings. Peaceful & relaxing break. Couldn’t ask for more. Lanes tight but really not as bad as we expected. Couldn’t find the washing machine and the nettles etc do need cutting back at the rear where the car is parked. Overall, fabulous place and our host Mrs Hill’s welcome of cake & advice was much appreciated. Thank you.

  • "My husband and I had a lovely stay here."

The cottage is very clean & comfortable. The only negative for myself is the step into the bathroom was very deep which with me having mobility issues I ordered a step on amazon prime to use while we were there. There are other steps into the kitchen but they were manageable ( for me). So if anyone is disabled, consider the steps, as although it's all on one level there are quite a few steps to negotiate. Fresh milk and cake awaited our arrival which was very welcome. The road to the cottage is very very narrow and winding so be prepared foe that also. If you love the countryside and being in the middle of nowhere , this is the place for you. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would highly recommend the old smithy. The owner being next door was no problem, our Privacy was respected completely. We were sorry we missed the owner on the day we left to say goodbye. The wildlife surrounding the property is lovely, often hearing owls at night and deer jumping out in front of us as we drove. 100% recommended for a peaceful holiday. Rosie & Nick

  • "The Old Smithy is a beautiful, well-appointed cottage deep in the Devon countryside."

Surrounded by the Blackdown Hills, the cottage is in a spectacular location and befriended by both cows and alpacas in the adjacent fields. If you value peace, quiet and proximity to nature, the Old Smithy is the place to stay. The owner, Mrs Mary Hill, couldn't be more friendly or helpful and welcomed us to the cottage with lemon drizzle cake. The cottage is however remote and the approach is a little nerve-racking when arriving for the first time, especially if you follow a satnav which takes you down lanes not much wider than the width of a car! We would happily visit again and recommend the cottage for a very peaceful stay.

Without doubt it is faultless; everything you need is here, and we would have returned one day had I not been poorly the day before we left. The situation had the potential to be extremely awkward for Mary, indeed for us all. This was one occasion where an isolated cottage was far from ideal.

We are oldies & found driving along the single tracks to/from the cottage to the main road very stressful, especially when a vehicle came the other way, so we left 3 nights early to visit family a couple of hours away. Our fault we should have read the Sykes reviews before we booked as someone else did mention the roads are a little hairy.

The bed was extremely comfortable and the house was warm and cosy. The owner had provided milk and home made cake on our arrival. The kitchen was a home from home with loads of equipment. Everything was excellent, we even had Wi-Fi and Sky TV. The local area is safe and very quiet with views of the, hills, farmland and sheep. The location is good for access to Honiton, the south coast and the moors. We visited, Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Exmouth, Seaton and Beer to the south. Okehampton and Tavistock to the west in Dartmoor. There are lots of walks near the Smithy in the Blackdown Hills. I would highly recommend The Old Smithy for couples who like to get away from the town for a while.
