Our party of parents, children in their twenties, grandparent - and our dog - liked the room and facilities in the house. The owner was especially helpful as storms had affected the wi-fi, but we coped and were grateful for their checking-in. We would highly recommend Wetherlam for a large group, with its proximity to Grasmere.

  • "We have stayed in many holiday cottages and was a little disappointed on the cleanliness of the house."

The toilets were not spotless, and the smell of all 3 bathrooms was horrendous. The ground floor bedroom and bathroom was very damp smelling and the house was not particularly warm. I didn’t like that we couldn’t control the heat from the house. I had elderly poorly parents with me and at times they were very cold. The bins were dirty in the kitchen and the worktops needed wiping before we could cook. However the house offered lots of lovely space for a party of 8 adults and the location was perfect. We enjoyed many walks from the doorstep which was amazing.

Thank you for your feedback. I will follow up with the cleaners and apologise that was your experience. We encourage guests to contact us during your stay with any issues as we are keen to resolve them so you enjoy your stay! We have some radiators that are controlled remotely (and will happily change the settings to suit you if asked), but also have heating sources that you control at the property, including a lovely log burner. We are delighted you enjoyed the walks and wonderful location! Property Owner

  • "We stayed at Wetherlam, following a recommendation and despite the Lakes being busy as was Easter, the large accommodation was quiet and beautiful and I can strongly recommend it for a large party:we were eight adults."

The facilities were clean and more than adequate. We cooked most days and the kitchen equipment was superb – Everything provided, multiple cups, kitchen utensils, large range cooker etc. . (As in most accommodation the knives weren’t very sharp – so I always take my sharpener). The beds were extremely comfortable; there was plenty of toilets and bathing facilities for eight people. And on top of this there was an excellent games room with yet another TV and table football! This is nothing to take away from the views which were superb - over the lake below. We walked each day, despite variable weather direct from the house and had some fantastic views high up on the hills. I recommend Alcock tarn ,then on to Heron Pike if you have the energy. This hike starts just behind the house and has fantastic views over to Windermere and beyond to the sea. The only problem was with one radiator which was fixed the next day, didn’t cause this much problem. I cannot recommend the property more strongly.I would definitely return. I do however have a gripe with heart of the lakes as despite taking out cancellation insurance and having to change the date due to one of our party working in the NHS, we were unable to get a rebate on the amount of money originally paid as the week we went was a lot cheaper. My advice would be to get different insurance if at all.

The house is comfortable and spacious. We thought the kitchen was particularly well equipped which we often find is a failing with rental properties. We were also slightly concerned about it being a 'shared' property but it is cleverly laid out so we were almost completely unaware of any other residents staying nearby. The location was perfect and views were stunning. Just a short walk from Grasmere village but direct access to many gorgeous walks straight out of the garden gate. We look forward to returning to the Lake District and will be very tempted to stay at Wetherlam again.

There are lovely views of the lake from both living rooms. It is cosy and very well equiped. We holiday in the Lakes regularly and this is one of the best properties we have stayed in. Very spacious for a large family with three separate living rooms. The property forms part of a large Victorian house which has been divided into separate holiday lets. We stayed over Christmas and were delighted that the house was decorated and had a tree. It was very nice (and unusual in our experience) to receive an introductory email from the owner.

  • "The property was beautifully located and very spacious and comfortable."

Bed and shower in the main bedroom were completely fab. Kitchen well equipped We were disappointed to not even have a pint of milk left for us to make tea on arrival (we stay in many properties and it seems to be a minimum standard and the last time we were up and in Ambleside in February there was a lovely collection of biscuits, milk, preserve and sourdough bread in a much more modest property) We were left with six sheets of kitchen towel, no bin bags, an inch of washing up liquid and a dishwasher with no salt or rinse aid. The loos had no hand towels. The house was very hot at times but we couldn’t turn down the heaters so had to open windows which seems very wasteful Finally several days our early mornings and all access to the terrace were disrupted by the noise and presence of decorators and their machinery working in the property with an alarm going off on the cherry picker soon after 8am on a couple of mornings and a power cable being trailed across our front door step. This did spoil our holiday With such a pricey property it was really annoying to have such problems ( especially being woken early by workman noise and thinking they’d be able to see in) in an otherwise wonderful property. Please note the workmen themselves were pleasant I have a video of the decorator alarm / noise.

Thank you for your feedback which we always endeavour to take on board. We are delighted you describe our property as wonderful and that it was warm for your stay. Some of the heaters can be controlled by guests if it is too warm and others are operated remotely-we are always responsive when guests ask us to adjust these (within reason) during their stay. Regarding the kitchen roll etc, supplies are usually left for guests and we are sorry if this was missed. However, as soon as it was brought to our attention the problem was rectified and some were delivered to you. Just to clarify, a hand towel and a bath towel are left for each guest. At the time of your visit, some decorating was being done to the exterior of the building. This was part of a rolling programme of decoration, necessary to keep the building looking its best. This work is due to be completed this week and we can only apologise for any noise. We are now pleased to be reintroducing our welcome packs which were paused during covid. Property Owner

A very well equipped kitchen, thank you. The house felt cold during the day but hot at night and no way to alter it. The hoover wasn't brilliant and didn't pick up well which I found really hard especially as I hoovered the whole house before we left. Would definitely visit again. We especially loved the fact there were different places to sit, this suited us particularly well since we had 16-85 year olds. Thank you. I would highly recommend this property for a fabulous getaway.

  • "We had a brilliant week."

The house was perfect for our family of six plus my parents. Two small twin girls and a six year old and four year old. Plenty of space To run around, the play room was excellent and it felt safe (as in baby proof) and comfortable. The setting is fantastic as well as all ages from 16 months to 76 have options straight from The door. This could be a simpler walk like coffin route or rydal caves else a stroll with buggy into Grasmere to get some Ginger bread else have a coffee in the garden centre or a pint in tweedies. And there’s also the opportunity to do Alcock tarn and me and our six year year old made it up to heron pike. This is all in February with wet weather. Again the big hall way means costs and boots and buggies etc can all be stowed and made ready for the next day. The extra sitting room On the 3rd floor was great for ‘adult time’ as well and good wifi on the afternoon I had to work. Thank you, it felt like the owners and HOTL really love the Lakes and love their house.

Thank you so much for your feedback. We do indeed love the Lake District and our “home from home” and are delighted that you had such a good week. We would love to welcome you back in the future. Property Owner

  • "There were a few maintenance issues with the property which we reported early in our stay."

The door lock on the ground floor shower room is broken, but not fixed during our stay. The drain pipe from the bath in the family bathroom was blocked and had to be cleared. The mixer tap on the shower in the family bathroom was broken and only produced very hot water - so shower could not be used. This meant that only the en-suite shower could be used for 8 guests during our stay. The shower door over the bath leaks water and needs a new seal - not fixed.

Thank you for your feedback. We have discussed this with the maintenance department at HOTL and they have apologised for not fixing these issues during your stay-unfortunately there was a miscommunication between Sykes and HOTL resulting in your issues not being actioned. We are extremely sorry for any inconvenience and have asked HOTL to look at their procedures to ensure that this doesn’t happen in the future. Property Owner

) and they may not always be available to use and parking is a little tight if you have big vehicles in any of the other properties (if I had not changed cars at the beginning of the year my car would not have fitted). Great location of the property, lovely scenery and great walking on the doorstep, perfect for a family based holiday and the facilities (in property and around) meant the kids never got bored. I did look at rebooking for next year, the increased costs would prevent me from returning.

Thank you for your feedback-I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay and the facilities in and around Wetherlam. Regarding the parking, there are allocated spaces for each property and Wetherlam has two large spaces. We often park three cars to the right of the front door (at a squeeze) and have always parked two easily, including our large Volvo. The garden is capacious (3 acre plot) and has benches and chairs in different areas for guests to use, as well as lawn areas for picnics. Equipped with just about everything you could possibly need. The views are magnificent with quiet walks from the property so no need to be in busy places. Only one very tiny negative - so few coat hangers!!! Limited places to hang clothes in two of the bedrooms and only a couple of coat hangers per person in the whole house so ....... if you're visiting take a few with you. Sad to see the price rise for next year due to the property being moved to Sykes - up by about 25%, this may stop us from re-booking as it takes it out of our price range

It’s a beautiful location on a hill with window views overlooking Lake Grassmere. There are some great footpaths accessible through the back gate. The town is beautiful. Just the right size. Not too touristy, but with lots of choices to eat and enjoy. The cottage has two great living rooms. The upstairs one has the best view with seats along the window. The gaming room was a hit with the kids we had fun table football games each evening. The kitchen is fully equipped and a pleasure to cook in. We had 2 deer eating out in front of the window The only thing that is hidden on the description is it’s presented as a single cottage. But the building is spilt in 2 and has another 3-4 holiday units on the same location. This isn’t an issue, but strange to not mention it. We would stay here again and still have lots to explore and do.

About the location

GRASMERE

Ambleside 5 miles; Windermere 9 miles; Keswick 13 miles.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family has been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century, and Grasmere Lake. Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere, and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.
