    Location perfect for us as many walks straight from the front door. Shop and excellent cafe 100yds. The property was very cosy. A well stocked kitchen and good tv/wifi. No issues. Highly recommend.

    The kitchen was well equipped for our needs. The garden was good and well enclosed for the dogs. Great to see that the TV had all the streaming channels for the kids given the weather was changeable. My only criticism is the pillows, they really need changing as they are thin, flat,and uncomfortable. Otherwise fabulous

    A great base, very helpful friendly neighbours and their pets. Lovely village and central for getting out walking, visiting local towns as well as gorgeous gardens. Lovely weather so made good use of garden. Down lots of back steps, not an issue for us and well kept. Bright house, quiet despite being on main road. We'll be back!

  • "We had a most enjoyable stay at Laurel Bank the property has all we needed Heating is remarkably good warming up quickly on return from trips out."

    Beds comfortable and sufficient storage for clothing. Never bothered with rear garden as it was November bit cool sitting out but looked dog secure. Parking can be busy though free car park just over the road. Local shops have a good supply of your day to day essentials and even the option of having a coffee. Would certainly return if opportunity presents itself. Thank you

    Very comfortable and spacious with enclosed garden for dogs or sitting out. Mostly clean and well maintained throughout, but a couple of things not quite right, mainly the oven not clean, a note was left for the owners hoping it would easily be remedied for the next guests.

  • "We enjoyed our stay in this lovely house in one of our favourite villages in Dumfries and Galloway."

    There is access to Garrie's Wood just across the road from the house, which is perfect for dog-walking. This was the second time we stayed here, and everything was clean and comfortable. We had a slight problem with the central heating when we arrived, but the owner came very speedily and sorted it out for us. We loved the fact that we could go out the gate in the garden to get to the Mill of the Fleet, which we really enjoyed visiting several times during our stay. All in all, we had a great holiday here, and would definitely book again.

    Great Central basefor accessing all areas. Neighbours and locals all very chatty and friendly. We def intend to comeback for another stay. Weather wasfreat so made use of the garden. Handy for Spar and local eating out options.Only thing missing was some coffee making facility, a cheap cafetiere would do fine for most folk I think.

    We really enjoyed our stay. We had brunch every day .at the Mill (with art gallery) by the river, and the parkland across the road was a great place to walk our dogs. The house itself was clean and comfortable, and a good base, and the neighbours especially were very friendly and welcoming

    It is a beautiful village in a lovely area with walks, beaches and good eating and drinking options. The cottage was well located and well equipped. There was plenty of space and it was generally comfortable. The garden was nice and a great space for outdoor dining, though could do with a bit of a spruce up. The only other issue was that we found the bed too soft. That may be our preference

    The house was warm and cosy, scrupulously clean and had everything we needed for our stay. The area is fantastic and there was lots to see and do, plenty of places to eat and drink and lovely friendly people to talk to. Towns are notably litter free although recyclying facilities are poor. Our nearest card / paper/ cans recycling facility was ten miles away so we brought our recyclable rubbish home with us. On a tiny note, it is nice to have the option of both bath and shower but the bath would only be suitable for thin people. We are intending to rebook this house again over Christmas next year.

    Very well placed for local amenities, especially the second hand bookshop at The Mill on the Fleet! Lots of things to do and places to eat nearby and further afield. We took the ferry across to Belfast (£10 each as a foot passenger - bargain!), to visit the Titanic Experience.

  • "The next door neighbours gate at the front was very distracting."

    The blind in the bathroom was too difficult to pull up and down. A handle on the wall of the bath/shower would be useful. The steps to the garden were very steep snd the chicken wire hurt the dog's feet. It would not be ok for handicapped persons. Liked the location to all amenities.

  • "Overall the accommodation was very satisfactory, being comfortable, cosy and well-situated."

    The heating was effective (and necessary due to the cool weather) and the TV and WiFi worked well. Although on the main street, the house is usually very quiet and has a pleasant outlook. The view over the river and woods to the rear is also nice and it was warm enough one day to sit in the peaceful garden. There is some noise from next door and at times it sounded as if someone was going up and down our stairs. The neighbours’ front door is particularly noisy although the occupants aren’t. The kitchen was well-equipped and the hob very efficient. The only item lacking was a pair of scissors. The bathroom is modern and very smart though the shower screen is not extensive enough to prevent splashing on the floor. The toilet seat is not secure and lurches sideways a little in an alarming manner each time one sits down. From comments made in the guestbook, it was evident that this problem has existed for over a year; perhaps it is very difficult to remedy. We didn’t find the double bed as comfortable as our own; it is obviously a matter of personal taste but we would have preferred a wider, firmer mattress. Having said that, we slept OK and didn’t wake with a stiff back. The town and area are lovely and we didn’t feel the need to use the car much as there are some great walks starting in the town. We ate twice at The Masonic Arms and once at The Murray Arms, the former being excellent. Their new conservatory is beautiful and a very pleasant place to dine; the service was friendly and efficient. Despite the above-mentioned reservations we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would be happy to return.

The property

A delightful, mid-terrace cottage situated on the main street through the small town of Gatehouse of Fleet in Dumfries and Galloway.

Nestling between the coast and the splendour of the Galloway Hills, it’s ideally located for a holiday in this beautiful part of Scotland.

Step into the entrance hall, which then leads off into a comfortable sitting room, an ideal place to relax with loved ones.

From the sitting room, there are three steps down into the kitchen, and you will find two bedrooms and a bathroom on the first floor.

The back door from the kitchen opens onto a small decked area with steps leading down to a lawned garden, where a morning coffee can be enjoyed before setting off and exploring this wonderful area.

Gatehouse of Fleet is an attractive town with much to offer the visitor, including four pubs, a selection of shops and a Post Office.

Explore the rich history of the area at the restored Mill on the Fleet visitor centre, Carsluith Castle or the Neolithic burial sites at Cairnholy.

Enjoy the outdoor life with the abundance of walking and cycling in the area and in the nearby Galloway Hills Forest Park, or relax on one of the many excellent beaches that can be found on the River Fleet estuary.

GATEHOUSE OF FLEET

Kirkcudbright 8 miles; Newton Stewart 15 miles; Castle Douglas 15 miles.

Peaceful in its pastel colours, the small country town of Gatehouse of Fleet lies on the Solway Firth, in the midst of Dumfries & Galloway countryside, with good sandy beaches a five-minute drive away. The town was founded in the 1760s as a mill community, and today the nearby Mill on the Fleet - a visitor centre in a former bobbin mill - tells the tale of Gatehouse’s cotton-spinning days. Today, there are several shops in the town including a small supermarket, chemist, bank and Post Office, along with two book/gift shops, a kilt-making centre and two cafes. All four pubs in the town have restaurant facilities and welcome children. Castle Douglas, a 15-minute drive away, offers an extensive range of shops, Threave Gardens and boating on Carlingwark Loch.
