  • "A very disappointing holiday."

We had to wash all kitchen tops, dishes, glassware ,crockery ,cutlery that we used as it was greasy and bits of food stuck on. The mattresses were old and should have been replaced over a year ago, no pillow protectors, the pillows were so thin and uncomfortable. Where we had to hang our clothes smelt damp and was not clean, so we lived out of our suitcase. Down stairs bathroom plugs in the wash basin and bath broken. I tried to use the grill but had to abandon it as it had so much fat stuck on it filled the kitchen full of smoke and set the smoke alarm off. we paid quite a lot of money expecting a good quality cottage, but we were very disappointed and had we not been in Rutland for a special and emotional gathering to celebrate the amazing life of my brother who recently passed away we would have gone home. The only good thing I can say is that the heating was good . The down stairs bedroom was classed as a double, the mattress was jammed between the walls with no access to the far side of the bed other than climbing .All the beds had poor quality linen and in appropriate duvets for the time of year , better suited to the cold winter rather than Rutland. Please feel free to ring me to discuss our time in pheasant cottage

  • "A very nicely renovated cottage situated on a quiet sideroad where parking is easily available."

The cottage has a nicely appointed ground floor bathroom with bath and overhead shower..there is also a bonus of a small shower room on the second floor. The bedrooms upstairs were spacious and light and the ground floor bedroom just about accommodated the double bed which you can't walk around. However, I personally didnt find this an issue though maybe at this time of year a lighter tog duvet could be provided? The nicely decorated living room leads into the bright kitchen extention with doors leading into the garden. The garden was perfect for our needs and for my French Bulldog. There were a couple of places where perhaps a smaller more inquisitive pooch could squeeze through but these can easily be blocked if necessary. The rugs in the kitchen and living room tended to slip but they can easily be removed if considered a trip hazard. One friend read in the cottage notes that duvets covers etc were to be removed on leaving but I have stayed in many cottages and this is now expected. Overall, Pheasant Cottage was welcoming and clean and was perfect for my weekend stay with my two collage friends and my dog. Would we choose to return to the cottage??...Definitely! Jane

  • "So disappointed."

Visited for a week with elderly parents. Was delighted to have found a place that had a downstairs bedroom, bathroom and garden my small dog. However, I can only really asses our stay as 'adequate' and sorry to say that I wouldn't return or recommend, we left a day early. There were issues with cleanliness; damp/mould(?) in the cupboards designated as wardrobes so didn't really want to hang clothes in there; there was quite a bit of dust and lots of cobwebs (floors especially in need of thorough cleaning); some of the bed linen needs renewing as some was a bit grubby. The downstairs bedroom is far too small for a double bed. Although we only had one person in that room a couple would need to decide who climbs over the other to get in/out of the bed. We even kept the blind shut all the time once we'd climbed over to close it. The shower door is so ill-fitting that the entire floor gets soaked. Also, floor mats need some kind of gripper, very slippy on wooden floors. We rolled up the kitchen one and kept it under the table for the duration of our stay. The biggest disappointment was the garden. Although previous guests had commented on the garden not being entirely secure and the response being that it had been rectified, this is not the case. There are still gaps in the hedge at the end of the garden where a small dog can get through and what is behind is like a maintenance area. I used a couple of the outdoor seats to block the gaps. Small bin needed outside for poo bags otherwise having to carry it through the house to the main bin at the front (although I left them in the garden, by the table that serves as a stop gap, and took them to the bin on our last day). The other disappointing aspect to the garden was how ill-kept it was. Overgrown and untidy, even mowing the lawn would make a significant improvement. Overall the whole property inside and out needs a deep clean and some basic maintenance done. One last point: instructions in the property ask for guests to strip the beds before leaving. We did do this (on 2 of the 3 beds used) but this is a task for the owner/manager/housekeeper. Although we left a day early so had some time there isn't time for guests to do this kind of housekeeping and vacate the property by 10am. Emptying bins, washing up, yes no problem, but stripping the beds? Bit of a cheek. The village is beautiful and the location great for exploring Rutland but I noticed several other cottages in the village that were listed as self-catering so would look at those in future.

  • "A lovely welcoming cottage with good central heating (welcome in a wet January)."

Comfy beds and excellent facilities. A lovely location in a pretty and welcoming village with a good chip shop and a handy local store. The owner kindly let us know in advance that a garden fence panel was damaged but this wasn't a problem. However, I would just say that the garden isn't secure for dogs large or small as there are several areas where they could escape. Just worth mentioning for future visitors. Other than that, no complaints at all and really enjoyed our stay.

We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. We will review the garden security for dogs when we get the fence panel re-fitted. Thank you for pointing this out to us. Property Owner

  • "A truly beautiful cottage in a very pretty village."

Close to Rutland and the many stunning towns and villages. The beds were very comfortable and the bedding thick and cosy. I slept better than I do at home (possibly down to the fresh air and gin at the local pub)! Incidentally the pub serves great food which we sampled for my birthday. The service was great and our greyhound was made welcome whilst we ate. The locals were very friendly also. The kitchen is well equipped with an enormous fridge freezer and doors leading out to a pretty garden. We would definitely stay here again and recommend anyone looking in this area to try it out, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed

Thank you so much for leaving us a lovely review. We are lucky to be in such a beautiful location in the UK. We hope to see you again sometime. Property Owner

Garden needs some attention, eg weeding. Really loved the cottage and high end furnishes.

Thank you for bringing to attention the shower fan. We will get it looked at as soon as possible. We have some time booked in between guests to give the garden some attention. So pleased you liked the cottage and its furnishings. Property Owner

  • "Double bedrooms very cramped, no real access down both sides of the beds."

Really can't see how this property could hold 6 people. We were 2 older couples and found it was great for 4 as we had a double bedroom each or the twin bedroom. Dining table and lounge seating suitable for 4 not 6. No potato masher or Pyrex to use in microwave to make sauces, porridge etc. The property was lovely and clean so overall our stay was pleasant. In a great location close to Rutland water and barnsdale gardens. Pretty village and good pub.

Thank you for your feedback. We have been renting out the cottage for a year and never had any comments about the beds or the other points raised. We will of course look at putting a potato masher in the kitchen and a pyrex jug. Property Owner

  • "Both toilet seats were broken and one toilet was not even connected to the floor as the bolts had rusted."

Many lights were not working, including the one over the dining table. The towels were very rough, one of the beds you could only access from one side, so one of you had to climb over the other to get out. The garden was very uneven and totally unsuitable for an older person. There were old bits of broken wood in the garden with nails sticking out and access to the garden path was not good.

We were sorry to hear of the issues you had during your stay. As soon as we were informed about the toilet seat, we immediately worked to get it replaced. The outside porch light we were able to fix immediately and we have an electrician booked to go into the property this week to check all the electrics. We have never received any negative feedback about the garden and patio before. However, both have been booked for renovation this springtime. Property Owner
