  • "We thought long and hard about doing this review."

The host was so helpful and apologetic about the issues we experienced at 8 New Cottages, however the experience did spoil our holiday and so on balance we should be honest about our experience. When we arrived at the property we were welcomed by the owner who is a lovely lady and extremely helpful and she even gave my wife a Birthday cake which was a lovely gesture. We noticed lots of cobwebs around the house, especially in the bedroom which we removed ourself but more disturbing there was a strong smell of 'smoke' in the bedroom. We understood that the previous customer may have been smoking in the property. The first night was uncomfortable due to the smell of smoke so the owner made up the second bedroom for us and gave us a box of chocolates as an apology as we had also discovered ants downstairs and there were already a lot of dead bugs in the lounge window which I sent her a photo of. Again, The owner sorted this issue out the following morning and put ant powder all around the house and cleaned up the windowsills and also shampooed the bedroom carpet to get rid of the smoke smell. We also had no heating or hot water that morning. The owner sorted the problem out instantly as the property needed the gas bottle changing over. The second night we had to sleep in the second bedroom but the mattress was so uncomfortable and the smell of smoke was still apparent and was also on our clothes. We had a few minor issues: No Terrestrial TV/ BBC/ITV- there is a smart TV but it is not connected to an ariel and no streaming services were included. Also no USB charging sockets anywhere. Hot & Cold water taps wrongly labelled in the kitchen. No salt and the sugar was damp/solid- The owner replaced both promptly. Coat hook in the entrance hall to kitchen falls off the wall if you hang anything on it and the bedside table handle drawer also fell off The smell of smoke was still strong that we decided to cut the holiday short by 1 night and we left at 5pm on the Sunday. The property is in a great position and the owner is lovely and very helpful. I'm sure the issues we experienced will be rectified and future guests will have a much better experience,

I can only apologise for the smell of cigarette smoke on this occasion. We have a strict non-smoking policy, but the previous guests did not respect that. We did our best to deep clean, decontaminate, and aerate the property before these guests arrived on the same day the previous guests left. However, the back bedroom still had a residue smell of cigarette smoke that was apparent the next day. Immediately upon notification of this, we purchased brand-new bedding, including a new duvet and made the front bedroom into a king (using the zip & link beds). The make of the mattresses and beds in both the front and back bedrooms are identical and were purchased at the same time. Therefore, it is perplexing that these clients found the beds different. These guests unexpectedly brought their two pet cats with them on holiday. Because of this, they did not want the windows opened at all so the cats could escape. This did not help with air circulation during their stay, which was unfortunate. We do generally not allow cats to stay. The property is self-catering, and guests are expected to bring all their provisions. We are not contracted to leave salt or sugar in the property. However, these guests phoned me at 7 p.m. on Friday asking if I could provide them with some salt as they were cooking when the released they needed some, I immediately provided them with some. Our property is a rural property, and we do get visits from insects. On this occasion, the guests arrived earlier than the stipulated check-in time of 3 p.m. Consequently, we could not finish the deep clean to the standard we usually would. We ask all guests to respect stipulated check-in times to ensure the property is ready for their arrival. Unfortunately, as a rural property, it is not on mains gas, and therefore we use LPG gas cylinders. We do check the remaining gas in the cylinders on a regular basis, especially on change-over days. Although we are generally good at predicting usage, if clients leave the heating on high all night, this will deplete the gas faster than usual. We always have a second cylinder on standby, ready to replace an empty one. Indeed, on this occasion, the guests had their gas cylinder changed immediately upon request after the heating had been left on all night. We do have a smart Wi-Fi TV in the property. These guests asked us to provide the passwords for our Amazon Prime TV. Guests get full access to all free digital channels but are expected to log into their own Netflix or Amazon Prime accounts if required. Following the departure of these guests, we took the property off the market for ten days for emergency maintenance. This time has been used to thoroughly aerate the cottage and remove any residual smell from cigarette smoke and, indeed, cats. Property Owner

  • "The property was very pleasant and practical."

We were very comfortable. We have already booked a further break here for 2 weeks. The hosting was unobtrusive but any questions or issues were dealt with instantly and in a very pleasant manner. Stairs are a little steep but not the worst. Great location.

  • "A lovely, cosy cottage in a peaceful location."

I stayed with my two boys and there is a safe park one minute away from the front door. Situated in a quiet area, yet all the amenities of Chirk just a short drive away and lots of options for places to visit too. The owner was very kind and helpful, nothing too much trouble. On our first day there was a small problem with the boiler which I couldn’t fix and this was immediately sorted. In the summer the garden and patio will no doubt be a lovely place to sit back and unwind. My boys commented on how lovely the new carpets felt and insisted we get the same one ! I have no hesitation recommending number 8!

About the location

CHIRK

Llangollen 5 miles.

The small border town of Chirk (Welsh spelling: Y Waun) stands on the escarpment above where the rivers Ceiriog and Dee meet, and is referred to as The Gateway to Wales. Most famous for its magnificent 14th century castle and gardens, one of many built throughout Wales by Edward I, Chirk boasts a wonderful aqueduct, designed by Thomas Telford, a selection of pleasant pubs and restaurants, convenience stores, chemist, gift shop, coffee shops, local butcher's, greengrocers, bakery, an excellent golf course and marina. The surrounding area, notably the beautiful Ceiriog Valley described by Lloyd George as “a little bit of heaven on Earth”, provides wonderful walks and cycling, including the famous Offa's Dyke Pathway, and local trout fishing. Only five miles from charming Llangollen, with its stream railway, watersports, famous Eisteddfod, Castell Dinas Bran, Valle Crucis Abbey and scenic Horseshoe Pass. Also five miles is the market town of Oswestry with its iron age hillfort, and within easy reach is the Roman walled city of Chester with its famous zoo and the medieval town of Shrewsbury, both only half an hour by train or car from Chirk. The beautiful Lake Vyrnwy and Llanrheadr waterfall are also within an hours drive. This great location has plenty to see and do for all the family!
