• "The house is lovely and the perfect base to explore a beautiful village and cove."

  The owner was helpful and tried to solve issues we faced, most of which were out of his control and perhaps due to the previous incumbent’s treatment of it. On arrival we found a patio with dog poo on it and on the upper terrace remnants of a party, including drugs (glue we think). We could have cleaned the patio better from old poo if the hose attachment worked (you need to hold it on) and if provided with a yard brush. Inside the house we managed to lock people in a bedroom and toilet - on the first night; grateful that the housekeeper arrived and removed the locks but that did make using those spaces difficult. The wardrobes are all a bit rickety, we tightened things where possible but the knobs on the downstairs bedroom lacked nuts! The toilets and showers blocked quite regularly - we found the plunger but suggest the drains may need rodding. The washing machine needs a good clean as full of mould. The kitchen very well equipped but several glasses were cracked, so we put in bin. The sofa had obviously had a thorough clean but the agent used gave my granddaughter a horrid rash as she sat on it in just her pants - it took us a few days to identify the culprit and then bought additional blankets to cover it. May I suggest you get sofa covers that can wash between visitors (I do this for my cottage when rent it out and easy peasey to clean). The cleanliness of the visible spaces is good but noting has been moved to be cleaned for example I dropped my glasses behind the bedside table, moving to find it was obvious that never been cleaned as thick with dust that had had something spilt on it as also up wall. Did best to remove but needs a good scrub as do lots of the walls which are splattered in an array of colours. This might being contributing to the fuggy smell of the house, which is particularly strong downstairs - suggest a plug in aroma thing in hall as it is quite off putting when this is the first experience of the house. The WiFi is bad. Owner was brilliant at helping us get a better signal but it didn’t allow online meetings so sadly two of our group had to leave the holiday early. It would have helped to have known about WiFi in advance as could have adapted. It is a shame that such a lovely house is let down by cosmetic stuff - just needs a decent amount of love to make it shine again. Perhaps a bit more time allowed between visitors to get it up to scratch. Things like stained bed linen could be rectified with a laundry service? We would definitely return as loved the location and can see the charm in the house but I do feel that Mengarth in the state we found it in did not give value for money and the holiday was marred by this.

• "Mengarth is in a beautiful location and is a spacious well equipped house with everything that you could need in the Kitchen, we enjoyed our stay apart from a few issues."

  When we arrived I went to let my dog out unfortunately on the terrace area there was dog excrement and quite a bit of it, it looked like it had been there for quite some time so I had to clean this up just after arriving at the property which wasn’t very pleasant. The downstairs bedroom to the front has the most terrible smell of damp to the point i couldn’t keep any of my clothes in there. I think the whole property could do with a good deep clean, apart from this we enjoyed our stay the house had plenty of room for us and is well located the garage was very useful. And as I said the house is very well equipped.

  No dogs had stayed in the weeks before. There have been foxes and badgers in the area, but this is very unusual. We have had words with our housekeeper and can assure you that cleanliness is of the HIGHEST priority. All the bedrooms smell of a light and temporary air freshener, nothing else, I assure you. There is no damp problem. Guests before and after checked this. Sykes checked the property only a few weeks beforehand. You did not bring this matter to anyone's attention at the time, or when the owner called to check everything was alright. We would have sorted this immediately if it had existed and we can assure all future guests that this does not exist. We are delighted you had a great time and enjoyed your stay nevertheless, as do all our lovely guests. Thank you. Property Owner

• "The house is spacious, really well stocked and has nigh on everything you could need, but it needs a really thorough deep clean."

  I suspect there may be a damp issue as the smell in the whole of the downstairs area was off putting and very strong. Despite using the dehumidifier / opening the windows, it didn't reduce much in the week we were there. There was also an awful smell in the upstairs bedroom, despite keeping the windows open. It's a shame as the house and setting is really lovely. Also be aware that the sauna is as described 'small' - it is uncomfortable/awkward for 2 people.

  The guests the week before gave us 100/100, saying: ‘We will definitely return!’ The next guests gave 94/100. We are open to criticism, but the feedback about ‘damp’ is unbelievable. The house was deep cleaned, inspected, and got a glowing report only a few weeks before. The owner was at the property an hour after this guest’s departure and nowhere had a smell or damp. It was exceptionally clean. It was the height of a hot dry Summer! There was and still is no damp problem. From arrival, the housekeeper, agency and owner were all available to be contacted, to check and ameliorate any concerns, but this guest chose not to complain during their stay. Yes, the sauna is small as stated, and rather lovely especially in the winter. We are delighted that everyone else loves our house, including the sauna, and return year after year. Property Owner

• "This lovely house was spacious, well equipped and comfortable and well placed for exploring the Lizard and west Cornwall."

  The owner called to check everything was ok which was appreciated. We enjoyed breakfast on the patio, surrounded by beautiful flowers and listening to the sea. Cadgwith itself is lovely with great walks on the coast path and shanty singers in the cove. We will definitely return!

• "Beautiful house, peaceful but with lovely views of the sea."

  We stayed for a week in May, and we loved the house. It’s like a home from home and huge! Ok so, it’s a little scuffed at the edges, if you want pristine, then choose somewhere else. But if you want super comfortable beds, a well equipped kitchen, lovely sitting out areas, beautifully clean and homely, AND masses of space, then absolute come here. Pub is an easy walk even if it’s uphill on the way home, it’s not difficult. Lovely shop for fresh fish and sandwiches, and walks in all directions. I can’t recommend highly enough. We loved it!

• "We were very happy with our stay."

  The village is lovely and the house is well placed for everything we wanted to do. It was also very dog friendly - toys, fenced garden, hose for rinsing. And for humans, a well stocked kitchen with added welcome treats, comfortable beds, a useful garage for storing stuff and a great sitting room made us very happy. We'd definitely come again. And we met the very nice cleaner as we were leaving. She did a great job!

• "A lovely large property, very comfortable living space for 8 adults - plenty of seating, more than enough crockery, glassware, etc - even when one load in the dishwasher!"

  Beds were comfy, plenty of wardrobe space, the sauna was a fabulous bonus. The garden was GORGEOUS with fabulous views and lots of interesting places to sit. We absolutely loved our stay here, and managed to squeeze 3 cars on the driveway too!

• "Lovely property - well equipped and beautiful location."

  Ideal for the family and children and a very generous welcome pack when we arrived. Just one minor suggestion. The local contact’s phone number is missing a digit so when we tried to contact her on day one re a broken toaster we could not do so. She did not reply to emails so perhaps owners should check? We have also left a make up bag and shaver cover and cannot contact her to arrange to have them sent - can you help by forwarding her correct number please. A matter for Sykes cottages - come on guys Covid is well and truly over and never was transmitted on bed linen. Asking clients to strip beds is really not acceptable now. Part of the rental is so that domestic tasks are done by the house staff not the client. You need now to review your policy.

• "Our second holiday at Mengarth."

  We love it here! Cadgwith is a lovely village in a perfect location for long coastal walks and for exploring the delights of The Lizard and Mengarth is a perfect place for a large family group to stay. Close to the Cadgwith Cove Inn for evening meals and within walking distance of a good local shop in Ruan Minor. Please note the oven could do with a really good clean and that the freezer part of the fridge/freezer desperately needs defrosting and cleaning. Otherwise no complaints. We had a great stay and hope to be back.

• "Mengarth is a beautiful property in a beautiful location."

  We arrived to a surprise of scones, cream and tea/coffee which was a lovely thought. The owner phoned after a couple of days to check if everything was ok, which again was a nice touch. The property is very spacious for all our needs and for our 2 well behaved dogs! The kitchen was well stocked with cooking items and cutlery. The fridge was large (though the freezer compartment was relatively small - so note if you are bringing food with you on your stay). In all, a lovely stay and hoping to return at some point in the future. Thank you.

  Very clean and tidy and in a perfect location to explore the lizard peninsular. The bedrooms were a generous size and beds comfortable. The lounge was large but cosy could not fault the place.

• "This was our 3rd stay at Mengarth, we love the location, the property and Cadgwith community."

  The Inn is excellent and the area outstanding for walkers. It was lovely to get a call from the owner asking if we were happy with everything. We are already booked for next year - can't wait to be back - which in itself speaks volumes.

• "The standard if the inside of the house is poor."

  The bathrooms are well below par and the jacuzzi bath has black sludge coming out the holes and smells of drains. The mattresses are too soft and have poor covers and the bed in the front room is broken so we had to sleep on a slant all week. Very sadly disappointing

  Thank you for your feedback. We’ve spoken with the owners about your comments and they dispute your claims. They're bemused by your review and feel it bears no resemblance to the facts. Criticism is taken seriously and they have checked the position with their new excellent cleaners to whom they are grateful for the excellent service they provide. They also spoke with the guests who followed and also the electrician who visited on your day of departure. Complaints of sludge and a broken bed have been investigated and are unfounded. The photos on line are a true representation of all rooms in the property. Mattresses are a personal preference and there are no previous reviews to suggest otherwise. It is unfortunate that you did not report any of your concerns during your visit and when they spoke to one of your party, he said that you were very happy. Property Owner

• "House keeping not quite up to spec."

  We always clean Holiday let’s when we leave and we did a better job. We also had a strange thing happen twice. Someone was visiting the let while we were out for the day. Gates that were closed opened and garden seats moved. We took al valuable items with us just to be safe.

  Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. The cleaners have apologised and assured us this will not happen again. We take cleaning very seriously and the house will be deep cleaned and checked in advance of all guest arrivals. The lawnmower man visited and apologises for not asking in advance. • "The accommodation was very spacious and the views were stunning."

  The outside space was great for eating alfresco. The beds were really comfortable and the kitchen had absolutely everything we needed and more....however, the property was sadly let down by not being cleaned properly before our arrival (even though we were told we couldn’t get in till 6pm due to deep cleaning as extra precaution for COVID 19). The toilets and showers were dirty, human hair smeared on the wall in one shower cubicle and piled high in a corner of another. It was very dusty and cobwebs missed in all rooms. Dog hair everywhere that got all over our clothes and especially our socks. This let the holiday down. The cleaner/s need an ear bashing!!

• "We have had a great holiday in this lovely house in the village of Cadgwith less than a 5 minutes walk from the excellant pub and the coastal footpath, despite the mixed weather from the tail end of Storm Dennis."

  Cosy sitting room with efficient wood burner and a super kitchen, we could imagine how lovely it would be in the summer when able to use the terrace outside. The sauna was a great boon and we enjoyed using it after wild and windy tramps around the beautiful Lizard. We would be very happy to stay at Mengarth again.

• "Smoke alarms, batteries disconnected."

  WiFi doesn't reach living room. 2 shower heads broken, 3rd shower in sauna room was a in a very tired state. Freezer door broken. Spot light in dining room in poor condition. Mold on inside living room windows. Cobwebs! General cleanliness not up to the standard expected. Green bin..lid fell off and can be dangerous. Instructions for putting out rubbish was not clear. Outside light by door not working.

• "Mengarth is a lovely house in a beautiful location."

  It is superbly well-equipped and we had a very comfortable stay. Everything was fine, although a few of the fixtures and fittings are getting a bit tired (e.g. shower heads, dishwasher racks, icebox door, mattress in upstairs bedroom, smoke alarms) and it could do with a proper freezer. The huge fridge is a real bonus, but the freezer section is very small. A four door freezer would fit in the utility room, alongside the tumble dryer. We stayed towards the end of the season, which might explain why we felt it could do with a deep clean. Overall cleanliness was perfectly satisfactory, but there were some cobwebs, dusty shelves, window frames and ledges etc. This is often the case with holiday cottages, as it must be hard to maintain high standards with just a few hours between guests and Mengarth was certainly cleaner than many we have stayed in. Saying all this to inform housekeepers, certainly not to be critical. We noticed that the suggestions from previous guests had been taken on board, so we hope our comments will be useful. The owners have gone to considerable trouble to make Mengarth a real home from home, which it was. We would recommend it.

• "Cleanliness issues - duvet cover on one of twin beds had blood stains , sofa seat in twin room badly stained ( should be disposed of ) ; upstairs shower drain fouled with hair etc ; deep clean needed in upstairs bedroom carpet."

  Facilities lacking - stair gate at top of stairs for toddler safety ; oven gloves ; cafetiere ; BBQ. Information - conflicting information between internet sources concerning high chair availability and failure to provide correct answer by office when telephoned ( told no high chair when one was there )

• "Freezer in main fridge was no more than a large ice box and not adequate for 8 people."

  Perhaps a small chest freezer in garage or utility room could be a solution The en suite shower in the twin bedded room was scalding hot and we were unable to turn it down. Could have badly burnt the children. Very comfortable and well equipped, garden was beautiful. We managed to squeeze 3 cars into the drive. Would recommend

• "We had a lovely holiday to Mengarth and loved the cottage."

  The location was beautiful and just a short walk to beach and pub Cadgwith Cove and Cellar restaurant. Also in village was a small shop and amazing gift shop. The house was beautiful with a lovely patio to sit on when weather was good. Kitchen was lovely and big and very modern with all the utensils needed to cook for an whole large family. Only little niggle I would say was freezer part of fridge freezer was very small but the fridge was enormous so don't get too much frozen food if you get a shopping delivery which luckily we hadn't. Kitchen was cold at beginning of holiday so a small heater or radiator may be an idea but didn't affect us as we did plenty of cooking . Sauna was lovely and enjoyed using this on a couple of times . We will definitely be coming back to house again just wish it took 10 people lol as have to organise an holiday next time for that many people. I really did not want to write this review as like to keep good cottages secret. Also must be noted as reversed way of house there are stairs upto main lounge and kitchen and one lovely bedroom . Not sure if a stairgate was provided for stairs as we didn’t have young children but maybe worth asking if taking young children. Overall a fantastic property and loved the place x

• "Mengarth is a very good house in a superb location with very good facilities."

  Even though a few things need to be updated, the house was very clean throughout. Along with the views the kitchen was the star of the house, clean and well equipped but still leaving enough storage for your own shopping items. It was a nice surprise to get a call from the housekeeper midway through the holiday asking how we were finding our stay and if we needed anything else. A very enjoyable and comfortable stay.

• "House is dirty & badly maintained."

  Peeling wallpaper, stains and scratches on walls, floors & ceiling. Crates of rubbish in garage with flies. I spent 2 hours cleaning after our arrival. Filthy headboard in blue bedroom that we removed. Curtains hanging off rails. Dining chair covers stained. Table not large enough for 8 people. Cushions with tears. Swing top of kitchen bin broken. Iron broken. No roasting tray, casserole or bottle opener. Rotary dryer broken. Dishwasher tray at bottom doesn't fit. Lack of adequate furniture in 2 bedrooms. Water pressure in ensuite shower so low that water only dribbles. No information file with H&S or local numbers for doctor, vet, etc. Chair in back area of lobby broken & unsafe to use. Unfinished repair to French doors. Dead plants in pots & baskets. Very disappointed & shocked at the poor condition of this property.

• "Mengarth is in a lovely location."

  Cadgwith is a great village right on the S.W. Coastal Path. However the cottage is tired - no cushions on outside furniture, racking in dishwasher needs replacing and whole place needs a jolly good clean. Overall it suited our needs and seven of us and a small dog had a great holiday and would certainly book again. Lots to do for the whole family ages ranging 13 - 74. Sykes Cottages very efficient and info given accurate and helpful. Thank you.

• "Positives:- The house is spacious, the kitchen is modern and well equipped and the house is in a beautiful location."

  Negatives:- The house is dated and is in dire need of decorating and updating, it also needs cleaning thoroughly. The outside area is dismal, dirty and unkempt. The house sleeps 8 but the outside furniture and BBQ do not cater for 8 people, there is a table that would seat 4 and the BBQ would be suitable for 2, but was not fit for use. These are some of the issues we had: (I have photographic evidence) The BBQ was rusty, placed in a plastic garden storage container that was full of flies and household rubbish from Christmas Outside table seated 4 – the house sleeps 8 The downstairs toilet can only be used if you sit on it sideways - The flushing mechanism did not work The tap in the downstairs bathroom was loose and did not work properly Seat in the living area broken The cushions on the furniture were ripped or torn Dining room chairs stained and dirty Cobwebs on lights / ceilings in most rooms Behind beds / side of wardrobes thick with dust and damp Headboards not secured to the beds Jacuzzi in the bathroom didn’t work The house smells musty and damp It is such a shame as the house could be fantastic, but needs a lot of care and attention to bring it up to standard. We paid just short of £1,500 for the week, in comparison to other properties we have stayed in it does not warrant the cost being charged.

• "Good layout in house what we needed but steep steps to get into house with no handrails were difficult also the flat patio area was very slippery when wet."

  Windows and doors need a lot of work as they let rain in and we spent time mopping up sills and doorways in the heavy rain - some were impossible to open and although wedges or rocks were on the sills to keep the faulty sash windows up a little, if you had children it could be dangerous. narrow road was so steep 2 of us couldn't walk up or down and there was no parking near the beach area. Other cars illegally parked along road made getting on and off small drive difficult. The house needs some maintenance- fans not switching off -taps that swivelled when trying to turn them on. Smoke and co2 alarms with faults (new batteries didn't work) Little soaps were a nice touch but were past their best by dates. House was very clean which was a big positive but for the price I would have expected less 'well worn' furniture and the king size bed did not have a big enough duvet - it didn't fit in the covers and it felt a little damp. The chesterfield sofa had splits and was very uncomfortable to sit on. The small ensuite twin room had a toilet that was impossible to sit on the right way and unable to close door in use. Fan continued to run unless you turned main ceiling switch off Stunning views from house but it could do with a refresh and better maintenance. some thoughtful person had left a nice set of fishing hooks suspended on the garage door inside which I got caught on in the dim lighting. I really wish Sykes would have better search filters for disabled people and access was something searchable - it took a lot of time to find a layout to suit the family and from the description we did expect some difficulties because of the area. Although kitchen was great and everywhere very clean and stunning views the overall standard of the house and some safety aspects seemed poor.

• "When we arrived at the property we found the kitchen not be in the cleanliest state, i."

  E. crumbs on the worktops, hob top dirty, oven door dirty. The hot tap in the kitchen had a very poor flow and the water did not reach adequate temperature to wash up, so we had to use the kettle for hot water. The lamps in our bedroom did not work. Neither did the iron. Although the cottage was set in a wonderful position and was very well equipped, we felt that for the money charged it needs updating to give more of a clean, bright place to be. The only rooms we felt had this were the bathroom and the kitchen. Other properties we have stayed at for the same sort of money have had this feel.

• "The accommodation, facilities & location were good, it just lacked cleaning materials for kitchen or bath room."

  No scouring pads, dish cloth, washing up liquid or oven mit (Health & Safety issue). Also no dishwasher tabs & the dishwasher actually flooded the kitchen when we did tried to use it! All these items have been standard issue in all the dozens of cottages we have rented before along with instructions for the white goods.

• "Though it was lovely in Cornwall and especially in Cadgwith, the house was not what we expected."

  First of all it is well situated, has a great view and a very nice garden. But: It was dirty and in a very bad condition. Just a few examples: In one of the bathrooms there were remains of toothpaste on the shelves and also dust. On the tiles there were fingerprints, the radiator, which is white, had brown spots everywhere. In the second bathroom the drain in the shower was blocked. And everywhere on the floor were small black bugs. In the kitchen parts of the pots in the drawer were dirty. The telephone was so dusty that no one even wanted to think about using it. It seems that no one really cleaned the house before our stay. There were fresh towels and the linen were also new - but that's it. Aside from this everywhere were remains of the former guests: a pyjama and old socks, a really dirty recharger for a toothbrush, toys etc. And on top of it, the furniture is really old and somewhat run down. I know furniture is always a matter of taste, but it was partly broken (i.e. the window handle in the bathroom), dirty and somehow sticky (i.e. the tablecloth on the dining table). The Mengarth Cottage might have been a really nice place to stay ten years ago but today it is not worth the money. We had a really good time in Cornwall, but sadly we cannot recommend the cottage to anyone.
