  • "The pictures advertising the cottage are quite old."

The furniture is well-worn now and could at least be cleaned. Several things were broken like a shower head and a window, which we were not told about before we went. The general presentation was nice, but again, let down by the cleaning standard. We did raise these points with the owner and they agreed, and plan repairs with better checks before guest arrival. The steps down to the cottage could be tricky for some and there is quite a big speed bump to the car park. It is away from any road noise and is warm with plenty of hot water.

Thank you for taking the time to write us a personal email and to share your feedback here on Sykes following your recent stay. We truly value your input, as it helps us continue improving the experience for all our guests. We appreciate your compliments regarding the peaceful location, warmth, and availability of hot water. However, we are truly sorry that certain aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations, particularly with regard to the condition of the furniture, cleanliness, and the broken items, namely hinge on bathroom door was loose and shower handle loose, these have been addressed since your stay. These would have been addressed during your stay, if we had been informed. However as you said in your personal email, you didn’t want to be disturbed and of course we understand. I hope you can appreciate during peak season a deep wet dry clean of the sofas is not possible. These are done when the property has a gap in bookings. In regards to the broken window, it was replaced that day and unfortunately the contractors broke a pane of glass when installing, They did however secure the window for safety. It is our standard protocol to inform guests of any outstanding issues and once more sincerest apologies communication was poor on that day. In emails to guests prior arrival, we do ask guests to inform us of any issues they may be experiencing, so these can be addressed immediately or at the earliest opportunity. We take your comments about the outdated photos. New photographs will be taken within the next two weeks. Regarding the steps, it is noted in the description of the property. In regards to the Speed bump, it was installed for safety for all guests. We appreciate your honest feedback and thank you again for your review. Warm regards, Sari Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely time staying in Sari/Oli’s cottage just outside of St Agnes."

The cottage is beautiful and the perfect mix of old and new. It was clean, comfortable and very well set out. We were a family of 7 and had more than enough space. We surfed, hiked, cooked lovely food, relaxed by the log burner and in the hot tub. 4 of us attended a wonderful yoga class with Sari, which we would highly recommend. She very carefully crafted the class to a mix of abilities - some who had practiced yoga for years and another’s first time. We all thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you Sari and Oli for the wonderful stay.

Hi! It sounds like you had a truly wonderful and memorable stay at the cottage. It's fantastic to hear that the cottage provided more than enough space for your family of 7, allowing you to enjoy various activities. We're also so happy you enjoyed coming to the yoga class! Sari enjoys customising classes to different abilities, and it's wonderful knowing what a great addition the class was to your stay! So thank you for the wonderful feedback, thank you for recommending the yoga class, and thank you for sharing your positive experiences :) Sending heartfelt thanks. Property Owner

The cottage is absolutely beautiful, a true home away from home with everything one could wish for. The owners were incredibly accommodating, and there was plenty of space for us and our two dogs. The views were breathtaking, and we especially enjoyed the beautiful log burner and hot tub. The central location allowed us to easily explore the entire south coast of Cornwall, and the local walks with our dogs were nothing short of amazing. We can't wait to come back again.

The cottage is beautiful with a serene surrounding, secluded and private so just what we were looking for It was excellently equipped with everything you needed and could want And the cottage itself is beautiful and quirky However the hot tub was a big disappointment for us as we always book somewhere with a hot tub and this was the worst hot tub we have ever had in the most expensive property we have ever stayed Alot of the jets don't work and for such a beautiful accommodation that sleeps 7 I would have expected a top of the range hot tub or spa bath However it is a basic range hot tub with only 1 pump attached when it can have 2 We walk in excess of 20,000 steps everyday and usually make extreme use of a hot tub It does not comfortably sit 4 people let alone 7 A few things bothered me that I noticed which could make this property even better, as it feels like the love is missing since the award was won in 2017 I had to clean the grill before using it as it was dirty, there was a disposable razor in top of the mirror from Previous people, the tops of the wardrobes are filthy discovered when we got our bags down at the end of the holiday so I wasn't looking for dust And the artwork around the house is not from the local area but from Zealand which I guess is a connection to the owners but it would have been nice to have local artwork Overall we enjoyed our stay very much it was a lovely private location with lots of great information for local walks and activities which we did, the cottage is a stunning building and you probably won't be disappointed

UPDATE**THE HOT TUB HAS NOW BEEN REPLACED WITH A LARGER CAPACITY ONE WITH MORE JETS AND BUBBLES Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback regarding your recent stay at our cottage. We genuinely appreciate your comments and are glad to hear that you enjoyed the beautiful surroundings and found the cottage itself to be well-equipped and charming. However, we are truly sorry to hear that the hot tub did not meet your expectations. We understand how important it is to have a top-notch hot tub, especially when it is a key factor in selecting a holiday property. We apologize for any disappointment or inconvenience this may have caused you. Rest assured that we take your feedback seriously, and we will evaluate the condition of the hot tub to ensure it meets the expected standards for future guests. We apologize for the cleanliness issues you encountered, including the grill and the top of wardrobe. Maintaining a high level of cleanliness is a top priority for us, and we regret that we did not meet your expectations in this regard. We have shared your feedback with our cleaning team to reinforce the importance of thorough cleaning and attention to detail. Regarding the artwork, we appreciate your suggestion to include local artwork. The photographer is from the West country, there are a few photos of local areas, for example mousehole and the painting in the kitchen is by a Cornish artist. However, it is an avenue we will explore further, as we believe in immersing our guests in the unique culture and beauty of the area. On a positive note, we are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the privacy and the abundance of information about local walks and activities. We strive to provide our guests with a memorable experience and are thrilled that you had a lovely stay overall. Once again, we extend our sincerest apologies for the aspects of your stay that did not meet your expectations. We genuinely value your feedback, as it helps us improve and ensure that future guests have a flawless experience. If you have any further concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. We would be more than happy to assist you. Thank you for choosing our cottage as your holiday destination. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future for a truly exceptional experience. Best regards Property Owner

  • "Five Elements Cottage is a nice property in a great location, handy for many places."

It has a lovely kitchen and bathrooms. However, some more details of the layout and a floor plan on the website would be useful. For instance, it would be good to know that the utility (where the freezer is located) is at the opposite end of the cottage to the kitchen, and that the ground floor bathroom is not near any bedroom (including the ground floor twin, which is directly off the living room). The stairs are steep and there are steps up or down- some of them high- to access every room, as all the rooms are on different levels. Also, there is a long flight of shallower steps plus 5 steep steps down to the front door from the car park, which makes moving heavy luggage a real task. None of this is really clear from the description. I don’t think this cottage would be suitable for those with reduced mobility, as even the ground floor bedroom and bathroom are both down two steps from the living room. It would be great to have a welcome folder in the cottage with recommendations for local eating, places to drink etc, and instructions for the various appliances. This is the first place we have stayed that hasn’t had such a folder. Also, the hot tub is a great addition, but all of the jets do not appear to be working, so it maybe needs servicing.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave feedback. The cottage is a 400 year old cob building, which we restored back in 2015/16. There is only so much we could do regarding the layout and stairs/steps. We do mention this in the description, noted at the end. We apologise if you missed this. Since COVID, we have attached the welcome folder to the emails we send out to guests before their stay. Granted, a written version will be beneficial to those who prefer to have a physical copy. In response to your feedback, we will reproduce the welcome folder so there is one on hand in the property. The folder with user manuals for appliances etc are kept in a drawer in the utility room. We will make sure to mention this in the welcome email. We are sorry to hear that the jets on the hot tub didn’t appear to be working (we have since checked and in fact two jets are not working, therefore we have called in the hot tub maintenance). We hoped you would have mentioned this earlier in your stay when you had massage treatments with us; this could have been resolved sooner and you could have enjoyed the hot tub to the fullest. • "The cottage and its facilities are absolutely fantastic, we really enjoyed the hot tub, huge kitchen for food prep and barbecue."

The beds were fantastic and comfortable for a decent night's sleep and the location is very central, close to local amenities and the A30 to get to different towns. On the other hand we were disappointed by the delayed responsiveness of the host as sometimes it would take more than a day for them to get back to us for requests especially as we had infants with us. The house needed additional cleaning, we found a half eaten dog bowl under the sofa and there a stagnant smell of dog in the sofa with hairs sticking to clothes after sitting there. The bathroom door upstairs could have done with a lock too. The steps going down to the property are stoned and pose a health risk as some of us lost grip on a few occasions. Watch out for low ceilings too in some places! On the whole it was a lovely stay however feedback to the host/property owners would be to be more accessible and follow up when checking in just to make sure guests have what they need. The house is lovely and the additional touch of service going above and beyond would be icing on the cake.

We would like to thank you for taking the time to leave feedback, especially highlighting the positives but also drawing our attention to your individual issues. Regarding following up after check in, we are usually around to meet and greet. We apologise for our slower than usual response to communication. It was bank holiday weekend and we were on and off site in poor reception areas, which is why each of your requests were dealt with at the end of that particular day. In regards to cleaning and cleanliness, we had new staff doing the changeover and this will be raised with them. Sincerest apologies this was missed. Property Owner

This was really disappointing because the hot tub was what made us choose this property over others. The cottage was in a great location and other facilities were good. If the wi fi could be improved that would be good especially for teenage guests. There could be better instructions for the heating (we couldn’t find any) but we did use the log burner instead, we also donated a bbq as the fire pit/bbq one would be quite difficult to use as it was so low. Overall none of this would have prevented us from booking so are just options to make it even nicer. Would recommend regardless as the area and Cornwall is just great to visit.

We appreciate you taking the time to leave feedback. We have added information regarding how to use the central heating to the email we send out. The BBQ was in the shed due to the weather, sincerest apologies. Since then we have bought a new BBQ and cover that stay on the patio outside the kitchen. The wifi is as fast as it can be for our area. This will be upgraded soon according to BT! We are so happy you enjoyed your holiday. Many thanks. Property Owner

The location of this cottage is perfect, very easy access to all main routes, and also close enough to reach wonderful coastal walks and villages, St Agnes was lovely and visited a few times plus if in need of more amenities not far to Truro. There were 7 of us (adults/teenagers) which worked well with the sleeping arrangements, a little snug in the lounge though but we managed. The Hot Tub was an excellent addition and one of the reasons we chose to stay here, and can imagine this lovely private spot to be great in the summer too. It does have steps down to the cottage and lots of steps inside too, so to be aware of this with much younger children or elderly relatives. Sari the owner was excellent with all requests, very friendly and quick to sort anything out if needed. The WIFI was a bit intermittent which was mentioned on previous reviews. Cosy living area and a large dining table for family meals. Nice patio area with plenty of seating and we enjoyed the hot tub. The property is part of a complex of a few other properties but still felt very private. All spotlessly clean. Pretty much everything we needed in kitchen although a couple of smaller saucepans would be nice and there were loads of champagne flutes and not many wine glasses which seemed odd. Two fridges and a freezer which was great. Great location, close to st Agnes which had the most beautiful beach. All in all a pleasant stay with just a few minor niggles - As per another review we did struggle a little as we have a 16 month old and the floors are quite up and down so we spent a lot of time chasing her to stop her falling down steps. Would be helpful if listing mentioned this, pretty much every room has a step or two into it. A stair gate to go between lounge and hallway would be useful so we could have caged her in! The beds and pillows were feeling a little tired and weren't particularly comfortable, although they did have good quality bedding. The upstairs bathroom shower area would benefit from a refresh, some tiles looked a bit rusty or something. Would benefit from a tumble drier or at least another clothes airer or washing line as difficult to dry a whole load. All minor things really which didn't detract from an enjoyable stay

Thank you for your lovely feedback and we are glad that you enjoyed your stay. We can confirm that there is now a stairgate in the utility room for guests to use during their stay. Property Owner

The property is well equipped, the separate utility room was very welcome, as it meant we could enter through a rear door and dry our dogs properly before entering the main house. The jacuzzi bath downstairs was a delight and the hot tub outside was fab, especially when it rained! The location is idyllic, very quiet and even though you are near other properties, you don't feel overlooked at all. The grounds available to walk in are very pretty and enclosed. The Farmhouse and Studio are also holiday lets so some noise was expected but this is a rural part of the county so most times all you hear is birdsong and a local cock crowing. The road to the cottage is unpaved and very rough and bumpy so we were glad of our four wheel drive. The Cottage is at the side of steep hill so it can get windy at the cottage even if its warm at sea level. We did an onsite Yoga class with the owner which was excellent. We used the hot tub a few times which was a lovely added feature to the cottage. The cottage was clean and tidy when we arrived. We cooked all our meals in the well equipped kitchen and there are two sets of tongs in the drawer now in response to customer feedback. We did not use the BBQ but it comes with a full set of BBQ tools. The freezer and washing machine are in the utility room and all we longed for was a tumble dryer as the weather was not great for drying our cycling kit outside . But there is an rack to hang clothes on that can be put up indoors and outdoors. Our main issue with this cottage was the interior design which we would have liked to have known about in the marketing brief from Sykes purely for health and safety reasons. The doors frames upstairs are very very low and there are some steep steps up to the two double bedrooms and one step down to the bathroom and single bedroom off the upstairs landing. We kept banging our heads or missing a step. We are not tall but anyone over six feet will struggle at this cottage. Likewise toddlers would find the steep staircase and steps from the lounge to the dining room and then again from there to the kitchen difficult to navigate. For this reason we would not rent this cottage again.

It would have been hard work for an older couple. Again if we had seen the owners we could have told them. All in all we had a lovely stay at Five Elements Cottage.

  • "5 elements cottage if a beautiful house in a very peaceful setting."

We had a wonderful relaxing holiday. Our dog was very well catered for with a safe enclosed garden and and a handy field for those early and late short walks. The hot tub and a super addition, one we didn’t think we needed but turned out we did taking a dip most days helped us unwind. Great pubs and restaurants not too far away plus a superb take away pizza in St Agnes. Thank you Sykes for offering this gem!
