About the location

KETTERING

Broughton 2.9 miles; Loddington 4.1 miles; Rothwell 5 miles.

Kettering is a town in Northamptonshire, England. Before the Romans, the area, like much of Northamptonshire's prehistoric countryside, appears to have remained somewhat intractable with regards to early human occupation, resulting in an apparently sparse population and relatively few finds from the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. The nearby stately home of Boughton House, sometimes described as the 'English Versailles' has for centuries been the seat of the Dukes of Buccleuch, major landowners in Kettering and most of the surrounding villages; along with the Watsons of Rockingham Castle, the two families were joint lords of the manor of Kettering. The town is home to many shopping centres, water features, public art, sculptures, street furniture, trees, plants and an innovative pavement lighting scheme. Also nearby is Wicksteed Park, the United Kingdom's second oldest theme park, which now plays host to one and a quarter million visitors every season. In 1891, Dr John Allison formed Kettering Golf Club and built a 9 hole course designed by Tom Morris of St Andrews. Shortly afterwards this was extended to the full 18 hole course we have today, making us the original home of golf in Northamptonshire.
