  • "Lovely little place, immaculately decorated, especially loved the bathroom and the bedroom."

There was some roadworks going on whilst we stayed there which I think helped with the traffic outside, and never had a problem with parking within 100 metres, regardless of what time we arrived back to the property. Would stay here again, although next time maybe in the summer so we could of enjoyed the outdoor space.

Lovely walks and food places nearby, so much to explore and so little time. Dodging the cows on the roads on the common was an experience. Highly recommend ‘The corner House’ and Amalfi for dinner. The walks along the canal are spectacular. Thank you for letting us share the experience.

  • "This little stone cottage has loads of character and history, as it used to be an old Toll both for horse driven coaches."

It's immaculate inside and fitted with many mod cons. There is everything you would need to stay completely self contained for as long as you needed. The roof terrace with BBQ, seating and wood burning chiminea is a nice touch as it over looks a beautiful view of the Cotswolds hills. The bed is very comfortable! The local surrounding area has plenty to offer if you like country walks or cycle rides. It's not far from Stroud Town centre with lots of shops and nice restaurants. We ate out at Toni's Italian restaurant which was particularly good!.

The property

Please note this property only accepts Monday and Friday changeovers . Butterrow Gate is a beautiful former toll house located in the vibrant market town of Stroud, with one beautiful bedroom, it is the perfect romantic retreat for a couple seeking a relaxing break in the South Cotswolds.

The property was constructed in the 1820s and has eye-catching exterior and is one of the few toll houses in the UK to still have the original wooden toll charges board fixed to the front of the building – a very unique part of the building.

The green front door opens into a stylish entrance hall which contains a washer/dryer and is a useful space to store coats and muddy boots, before moving into the characterful living/dining room that has Cotswold stone walls, stone mullion windows, wooden beams and doors as well as gorgeous flagstone flooring with underfloor heating; the perfect space for a relaxed evening snuggled on the sofa with your loved one, with the light from the woodburning stove gently lighting the room whilst keeping you toasty.

The small yet well-designed kitchen has all the amenities you require to cook up a delicious romantic meal for the both of you, as you retreat to the drop-down wooden leaf table to enjoy your meal.

When night falls, head upstairs into the master bedroom which is bright and airy and has an abundance of character features such as original elm floorboard, Cotswold stone walls and lovely stone mullion windows with panoramic views overlooking Stroud and the beautiful countryside beyond, that you can enjoy from the comfort of your double bed.

In the morning, head down to enjoy an invigorating rinse in the walk-in shower before making you and your other half a steaming mug of coffee using the Morphy Richards coffee machine, to be enjoyed in the enclosed terrace garden that offers breath-taking views of Stroud and the fields beyond, with a charcoal barbecue and chiminea to make use of in summer months.

Butterrow Gate is located on the outskirts of the bustling market town of Stroud, famed for its independent shops, galleries and cafes and an award-winning farmers' market every Saturday, with an organic farm shop just a short drive from the property.

The town has a wide range of restaurants and pubs, the closest to Butterrow Gate being The Prince Albert Inn which is dog friendly and often has live music night and is also surrounded by the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where there are many lovely walks and cycle routes, including those through Rodborough Common which has spectacular views across Woodchester Valley and to the River Seven on a clear day.

The River Frome flows through Stroud itself and has a pleasant tow path which follows the course of the river, passing by the Stroud Brewery, just a half hour stroll from the property.

The Museum in the Park details Stroud’s interesting past, touching on its involvement in the Industrial Revolution when it was a cloth town and the rivers flowing through the Valleys powered the woollen mills, which is an interesting and educational day out for all.

Choose Butterrow Gate as your base in Stroud.

About the location

STROUD

Gloucester 9.5 miles; Cirencester 13 miles.

The town of Stroud is known as the less commercial corner of the Cotswolds, a somewhat bohemian collection of buildings, squares and lanes, tucked into the green hills which once housed countless sheep during the town’s time as the centre of the Cotswold’s woollen industry. Today, Stroud welcomes visitors to its friendly cafes, quaint bookshops, independent shops and tempting eateries. Described by Jasper Conran as the ‘Covent Garden of the Cotswolds’, Stroud has a regular farmers' market, year-round programmes of music and theatre, a thriving arts scene and a state-of-the-art cinema. For simply relaxing, Stratford Park on the edge of town offers lakeside walks, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and a museum. Head out of town to explore the five sweeping valleys which surround it, with country lanes just made for walking or cycling.
