  • "The accommodation at The Dairy is simply beautiful."

The property features lots of oak and high quality furnishings throughout, which adds a lovely touch and makes it feel very well looked after. The beds were comfortable and gave us a great night’s sleep each night, which is something we really value. The sleeping arrangements are generous too, with one double bed, two single beds (each with a pull-out mattress underneath), a bunk bed, and three sofas, there’s easily enough space for 8+ guests. The reverse-level layout (with the kitchen and living room upstairs, and the bedrooms and bathrooms downstairs) took a little getting used to at first, simply because we’d never stayed somewhere arranged like that before. The garden is a great size and well equipped, with plenty of outdoor furniture, a BBQ, fire pit, and parasol, making it a lovely space to relax. The only downside during our stay was the weather. We brought our dogs with us, and temperatures reached 36°C, which made things quite difficult. There wasn’t an outdoor tap in the garden to help cool them down, so the only option was to use the shower. Some of the windows don’t open (or very far likely for privacy reasons), and we couldn’t reach the skylight above the stairs, so airflow was a little limited. The main downstairs door is a stable door, which was great for the dogs, but the living room door opens directly onto the car park and road, which wasn’t ideal. Sadly, we lost a day of our holiday due to the lack of airflow in the property, which was just too hot for us all. We had been staying indoors waiting for the temperature to drop until venturing out, but the house was no cooler than outside, so for the sake of our dogs, we had to go home early. The extractor fan in the kitchen also wasn’t working, and combined with the limited ventilation, this made cooking quite uncomfortable in the heat. Overall, we did have a lovely stay and would definitely return. The extreme weather was unfortunate and obviously beyond anyone’s control, but on a cooler week this place would have been perfect.

The property

The Dairy is one of those places that makes you slow down the moment you arrive.

Set in the peaceful village of Bridgerule, this beautifully converted barn has been thoughtfully reimagined as a reverse-level retreat, where light, space and countryside views take centre stage.

It’s a wonderful choice for families or friends who want to spend proper time together, with room to spread out and plenty of character to enjoy along the way.

On the lower level, a welcoming hallway leads you to three restful bedrooms and a stylish family bathroom.

The king-size room feels especially special, with windows on two sides drawing in the changing light and an en-suite shower room that adds a little everyday indulgence.

The remaining bedrooms are equally inviting, offering flexibility for children, friends or anyone who appreciates a comfortable night’s sleep after a full day outdoors.

Upstairs is where The Dairy truly comes into its own.

Climbing the stairs reveals a stunning kitchen and dining space alongside a separate sitting room, both crowned with lofty vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and beautiful stonework that hint at the building’s agricultural past.

Sunlight pours in through the roof windows, creating a bright, uplifting space that naturally draws everyone together.

The kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, whether you’re preparing a leisurely breakfast or a celebratory supper, while the dining area encourages long meals and unhurried conversation.

A glass partition leads through to the sitting room, a calm, comfortable spot for movie nights, board games or simply opening the balcony door and letting the fresh Devon air drift through.

Outside, the enclosed garden is made for easy, happy days.

There’s space for children and dogs to play on the lawn, shaded areas for lazy afternoons, and a barbecue that invites relaxed outdoor meals.

As evening falls, gather around the firepit, watch the sky darken and enjoy the simple pleasure of being together under the stars.

From your doorstep, Devon and Cornwall open up in all directions.

Head towards the coast for wide beaches, rolling waves and dramatic cliff-top walks, spend time exploring the historic streets and legends of Tintagel, or wander inland onto Dartmoor, where rugged tors, open moorland and wildlife create unforgettable days out.

Back at The Dairy, you’ll always have a welcoming place to return to – somewhere to put your feet up, share stories from the day and start planning the next adventure.

BRIDGERULE

Holsworthy 5.5 miles; Bude 6 miles; Widemouth Bay 6.5 miles; Tintagel 21.3 miles.

The only Devon village west of the River Tamar offers a pub which serves real ales and a children’s play area. This is a fantastic base for exploring the surrounding area with some lovely walking and cycling opportunities. Nearby Holsworthy has much to offer, including a swimming pool, tennis court and splendid park with bowling green. Holsworthy town centre boasts a varied selection of traditional shops, pubs and cafés, based around the market square. Further afield is the popular coastal town of Bude which has something for everyone; great beaches for relaxing, and building sandcastles on, rockpools for investigating at low tide and cafes to watch it all from. For days out, take the coast road north to see the lonely lighthouse above the sea at Hartland Point or walk down the steep and cobbled village street (no cars allowed) of beautiful Clovelly to the harbour and the pub below. Follow the coast in the other direction and there's the little cove of Crackington Haven, Boscastle, King Arthur's castle at Tintagel, Doc Martin's "Port Wenn" at Port Isaac, home of the Fisherman's Friends and yet more great surfing beaches at Polzeath.
