  • "We had a lovely time at Orchard Lodge, what a fantastic place."

It was a great base from which to explore the surrounding area, and so much to see. The Lodge was exactly as described, really pretty, spacious, clean and comfortable that had everything we needed. We enjoyed sitting on the veranda overlooking the garden. Our dog also loved the garden and surrounding fields. We met the owners during our stay, they were gave us some great ideas of places to explore. We had dinner at the Staple Cross Inn which was just a 2 minute drive away (make sure you call them to book). The food was fantastic, a tasty home-cooked meal at a friendly local pub, and genuinely the best apple and blackberry scrumble we’ve ever had, and also the most yummy ‘fudgie’ pie (something we’d never heard of until then!) with homemade ice cream - you must try it - you won’t be disappointed!

Dear Katrina and Andy, thankyou so much for your lovely review. Makes it all worthwhile. We had Sunday lunch at the Staple Cross Inn today and showed Leigh the landlady your review, who was equally delighted. We would love to see you again. Best wishes, Clive and Bridget. Property Owner

  • "Nice quiet property."

The living room was comfortable with lovely sofas. The beds were very very firm unfortunately none of us slept well. The kitchen was well equipped with virtually everything needed to cook. Very pleasant owner who even went out of his way to find us a teapot. Unfortunately things took a downward turn on departure day. My 92 yrs old mum had used the bedroom downstairs and when I stripped the bed linen I was shocked. The pillow was very badly sweat stained and the duvet had stains too. I was very upset to find that my mum had been sleeping in that bed and had I realised about the bedding I would have had it changed or bought new myself.

Puzzled by your 25% score for comfort. Not one previous guest has ever complained of the beds being too firm. I think you protest a little too much about an allegedly stained pillow and duvet, only discovered at the end of you stay when stripping the bed on departure. The pillow cases and duvet covers are immaculately laundered for each guest, and your mum would not have had any direct contact with the pillow and duvet inside its actual covering. As you have now brought this to our attention we will replace the items if they are stained. You do not explain why you have only given 50% for accuracy of listing, or in respect of facilities. You say the sofas were very comfortable, and the kitchen had everything. What facilities were you expecting over and above those described in the property listing? Thankyou for your feed back, which is rather at odds with all the very positive reviews that we have received this year. I hope you still found your stay good value at £160 per person for a weeks stay (not that we actually receive all of that sum from Sykes!). Property Owner

  • "We found the lodge extremely comfortable and loved the pine interior with the added bonus of using the tennis court and games room which we enjoyed along with meeting Solo, the horse."

Clive the owner was very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately the location was not suitable for us due to the fact that access was via a very narrow country road with potholes that stretched for miles, which was not in the location description; therefore there were no nearby local shops and no safe access for walking from the property. It is a definite necessity to bring essential food upon arriving.

Thankyou for the 100% score for cleanliness and comfort. Devon has the largest road network in the UK to maintain, much of it country lanes. The state of our roads is the subject of national debate. Sykes writes the property descriptions. I don't think you will find a road survey report included in any of their listings. There is lovely walking from the property, and perfectly safe. Were you expecting pavements? The proximity to towns and local amenities is detailed in the property description, and is evident from looking at a map. Thankyou for your feed back and we hope you enjoyed your time in Devon. • "Lovely place for a holiday."

Owner very helpful and checking in with us to make sure everything ok. Fantastic large wild garden suited for children and well behaved dogs to explore. Photos on website don’t do the property justice which is such a shame as it’s wonderful.

Thank you for your kind comments, and pleased you enjoyed your stay. I am in the process of updating the photos with Sykes. Property Owner

  • "Great holiday home that is clean, comfortable and well maintained."

The kitchen had everything we needed and the garden was safe for the dog. Having a downstairs shower by the front door was perfect for washing the dog to keep the dirt out of the house - it rained a lot during our stay so this was important! There is a common at the top of the hill which was a godsend for taking the dog out for a walk when not wanting to go out in the car. The owner was really friendly and helpful. He popped over one evening just to check all was well which was appreciated.

Thankyou for your kind comments. Property Owner

. Very well equipped for five adults and a small child. Plenty of constant hot water and good heating when required. The area around the lodge was ideal for our two dogs.. Conveniently placed for shops and sites. Beautiful area to explore ( even on the narrow lanes and roads).

  • "We had a lovely time away, the only thing i would say is that we were asked to separate all the recycling stuff and put it in there separate containers and these were so full it was very hard to do this."

Also the sofa is very warn and could do with a new one. We did notice alot of flies especially in the bathroom upstairs. Not sure where these were coming from as we got rid of them and then they would appear again.

Glad you had a lovely time. As to the recycling, this was the Christmas/New year holiday, when unfortunately there was no refuse collection. The sofa is being replaced. I can only think that flies came into the bathroom from outside when the bathroom velux ceiling window was opened. Thankyou for your feed back. Property Owner

  • "Perfect if like us , you want a country side tranquil haven ."

Poor Internet and phone signals, suited us as we loved switching off and enjoying an uninterrupted holiday. Based central in the heart of Devon, an hour and a bit to reach Illfracombe and Exmouth coast lines. National trust houses and gardens to visit, most dog friendly with lovely walks enclosed.

I am glad you enjoyed your stay. I recall that there was a slight problem with the internet for an hour or so on one morning, but this was affecting all the properties in the area, and was not specific to Orchard Lodge. It was quickly remedied. Yes, the telephone signal can be patchy in this rural area. Whilst staying at the lodge, I recommend setting your mobile phone to accept internet calls, which gets around the problem, and I will add this to our literature. We hope to see you and your lovely dogs again. Property Owner
