  • "We had a great week at the Carriage House."

It's a lovely, comfortable house with some really nice paintings & ornaments. And set in a beautiful parkland setting. The position is excellent; we loved the walk down beside the river into Lyme Regis. And along the coast path, on either side of the town. All four bedrooms were comfortable & spacious. The living space was fine for six but eight adults might find the dining area a bit squashed. Also, as others have said, the garden is not at all secure for dogs. In one place, there is no barrier at all between the garden & the car parking area. Our only other quibble is some shortfall in kitchen equipment. We had to borrow a tin opener from the neighbour! But overall, it's a lovely house & we recommend it.

Thank you so much for going to the trouble to write a review. I am so glad you enjoyed your stay. I am so sorry you couldn't find what you where looking for in regards to kitchen equipment. In the kitchen there are drawers within drawers which may not be easily visible but they do contain tin openers and many other kitchen implements. I will try and label them more clearly. The front garden where the pool table and the sun loungers are is all fenced but only to about a metre or so high in some areas. As mentioned before we are not allowed to fence the rest of the garden. Best Wishes Jacqui Property Owner

  • "We had a super multi-generational (+ 2 dogs) family holiday."

All facilities were well thought out, with plenty of space for everyone to do their own thing as well as get together, inside and outside. We felt very relaxed, especially enjoying the ‘green energy’ from the decking. We arranged a supermarket food delivery for the first evening, which was really helpful, although we remembered to give specific instructions not to follow the postcode via satnav, we did liaise directly with the driver to negotiate the electric gate. We are hoping to visit again next year. Thank you for a simply marvellous stay!

  • "Overall excellent."

A few quibbles: door to downstairs bedroom jams and no lock or handle instructions on directions could be clearer-back gate only open if main drive locked, and this back gate is where Google takes you. One overall point of view-gardens being planted up with exclusively non-native plants- rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias etc. The lovely wildlife depends on native trees and arboretum all around. Could do with much more native species around site especially hedgerow and deciduous trees.

Thank You for your feed back, I am pleased you enjoyed your stay. I was not aware that one of the bedroom doors sticks, I will attend to that straight away. None of the bedrooms have locks as it's a family home, I think you may be referring to the ' Secret door ' to one of the bedrooms. This is a design aesthetic but there is a handle on the inside to get out. I believe the arrival instructions you receive before your stay give full instructions on the Gate keypad and directions to the front gates and advise not to use SAT NAV. The back gates are only available to guests for pedestrian use. Most of the planting on the estate was done a long time ago but I will definitely look at native species if I am doing any further planting in our garden. Property Owner

  • "Just back from a Bank Holiday weekend stay at the marvellous Carriage House, in such a quiet and beautiful setting, made all the more spectacular by the variety of leaves in their vivid early season greens and reds of the copper beech and acers."

The house is very well maintained, comfortable and extremely well equipped. There were six of us for our family get away, so plenty of indoor space, and of course, in the summer ample outdoor seating for any time of day. From the main lounge you’re always catching the stunning view of the sea and distant cliffs. The walk into Lyme along the River Lim is very pleasant, there is a footpath parallel to the main road to get down to the Talbot Arms where the walk starts. If you like hearty, tasty, well cooked traditional British pub food, the Talbot Arms is the place to go, anything fancier you will probably need to go into Lyme itself. As various reviewers have commented, the garden isn’t dog safe, I don’t know if it would be possible to ‘line’ the wooden fencing with close mesh wire. I know you get instructions on how to get to the property, but if you’re looking on the website map, the house is shown as being on the wrong side of the road!

Thank you so much for your lovely comments. I think you are referring to the small fence we just put in near the hammock. We are in fact going to put some chicken wire along there Tomorrow! unfortunately that is the only area we can try and secure as fencing is not allowed on the estate. Thank you for letting us know about the map. I hope to see you again sometime. Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely stay at the Carriage House and absolutely plan to stay again."

We loved the quiet setting - the fact it’s hidden away makes it such a peaceful hideaway from the busy Lyme Regis area. We could hear the owls and saw the rabbits and deer on the estate. We visited in a really quiet time but imagine it would be a real benefit at peak times. And even though it feels quiet and remote, it is really close to Lyme which we visited for dinner a few times. The property is really well equipped, it had everything we needed and more. We were able to sit outside for some of the week and enjoy the distant view of the sea. Everything was more than comfortable, the house was cosy with the underfloor heating and we loved the snug. It is worth being aware of the following but they didn’t detract from our stay at all: - there has definitely been some effort to make the front garden more secure for dogs but it’s not 100%. We kept ours on the lead and that didn’t bother us. - water pressure isn’t great as it’s rural, we just worked around this for showers etc We loved it. Thank you!

  • "This is a wonderful property in a beautiful location."

Seating areas all round the house, so you can always catch the sun. It is worth noting that the various steps around the garden and the deep step into the house were very difficult for my mother to manage with reduced mobility. The property is extremely well resourced and very comfortable. We loved the distant view through the trees to Lyme Regis and the feeling of peace and calm. Highly recommend this property.

  • "Just got back from the best weekend at the carriage house."

What an amazing property; clean and everything about it is so perfectly done, the interior design is beautiful. Very peaceful break away with everything you need, very well equipped. Decking is very slippy when wet and as other reviews the garden isn’t very secure for dogs but manageable. Thank you so much for such a lovely stay, this really is a gem of a place! We will be back for sure.

    Otherwise brillant property thank you

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. Unfortunately due to the parkland setting we are not allowed to erect fencing. We will try to get some sort of portable barrier to close off the patio area to make it easier to secure dogs. Property Owner

The property

The Carriage House is an exceptional, Grade II listed building located in Uplyme, a village set within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just a short drive from the popular seaside town of Lyme Regis and the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast.

Situated in a private woodland setting, this former carriage house for the main residence has been lovingly restored and imaginatively configured to an impressive holiday home sleeping up to eight guests.

The house is approached by a long sweeping drive taking you through the impressive grounds, with electric gates opening and welcoming you to the property, where you will find three off-road parking spaces, and a further space located in a separate car parking area situated in the grounds. The spacious open-plan living area has been arranged with distinctive spaces, including a sumptuous seating area featuring large floor to ceiling windows and doors that flood the room with light, and perfectly capture the distant sea and coastline views.

For the cooler evenings, a woodburning stove provides a homely feel and makes a charming feature in this room.

The kitchen is a well-equipped and stylish space, again adorned with many exquisite touches, with the large dining table a great spot to enjoy mealtimes together. For a quieter moment, there is a separate snug with TV and seating in what was originally the carriage section from where the house derives its name. The bedrooms are arranged over two floors, with two of the bedrooms, a king-size and a double located on the ground-floor.

The king-size bedroom is a fantastic room with doors that open into the garden giving a delightful outlook to your surroundings.

The adjoining bathroom has both a free-standing bath and large walk-in shower, again styled beautifully.

The double bedroom is a charming room, with exposed stonework and a shower room conveniently located next to it. The other two bedrooms are located on the first-floor, reached by a hand-crafted staircase.

With vaulted ceilings and feature windows, one is a large king-size bedroom, whereas the other is a family room with both a double and single bed, with the family bathroom housing a feature roll top bath and walk-in shower also located on this floor.

The house is situated in an impressive woodland garden with several outdoor areas sympathetically positioned nearby for you to make the most of your surroundings.

Step down from the lounge to an adjoining decked seating area which has been furnished with relaxed style seating and a low table that creates an informal setting ideal for an evening drink.

A sunken patio area has been adorned with inviting garden seating and sun loungers, perfect for making the most of the good weather.

The owners have thoughtfully added a large outdoor dining table, ideal for alfresco dining, as well as an outdoor pool table allowing guests to fully embrace the great outdoors when the sun is shining.

The grounds themselves are a delight, linking up with popular footpaths, the nearby nature reserve at Trinity Hill or into the village of Uplyme itself, with its shop and village pub. From Uplyme, there is a riverside walk from the village into Lyme Regis with its family-friendly beaches, independent shops and galleries, along with must see attractions including the iconic Cobb Harbour and Aquarium.

Popular days out include Charmouth, where you can try your hand at fossil hunting on the beach or learning about the area’s rich history at the Heritage Coast Centre.

Further afield, the pretty fishing village of Beer is also an excellent day out, with its quaint streets and art galleries, or why not partake in a pint of local beer at the aptly named Barrel of Beer, in Beer! Visitors to Seaton can hop on the tram for a scenic ride along the River Axe estuary through nature reserves to the town of Colyton or take a leisurely stroll around the wetlands centre, nearly 4km of level trails and boardwalk through beautiful marshland and reed beds alongside the river, which itself is home to an abundance of wildlife. For a truly memorable holiday on the stunning Jurassic Coast, the Carriage House is the ideal choice.
