  • "This was our second stay at Westward - a property in a brilliant location with terrific views."

The property is great for a family self catering stay - with a well equipped kitchen and comfortable living spaces. It was great to see that the areas we had fed back to Coast and Country on had been updated and improved since our previous stay. For example, the rear patio doors (which are now a great feature), and the TV, dining area flooring, and outside spaces. We noticed that the balcony hand rail is on the wobbly side and probably needs a look at the ensure it is still secure if someone were to lean on it with their full weight. All in all we had a lovely time at Westward, and Coast and Country have been responsive and proactive during the booking process and stay.

  • "We had a great time at Westward, can see why people keep coming back."

The views of the sea made the holiday even more relaxing. You’re just a short drive or if your very fit could walk to High Hope where you can take your dog on the beach. The garden is very secure, this is always a worry for us, but you don’t have to worry. Only negative is that the house needs more outside furniture. If you have 6 adults, you want to sit together. Also you can’t enjoy those fantastic views. It was so lovely and peaceful. The staff of the sister company of Sykes was great when we had a minor issue. Came out twice and we’re very friendly and helpful. Shame about Sykes staff when we rang late on arrival and the telly wasn’t working, told play charades, doesn’t help when you’ve been driving for 7 hours due to terrible traffic. I would definitely recommend Westward House, yes needs a bit of TLC, but it’s a lovely big house, with a beautiful garden and views to die for.

  • "Check out time was confusing."

Sykes had sent an amendment stating a check out time of 1000. However a COVID checking out sheet at the property stated 0900. The back door (sitting room > sea facing garden) was very difficult to lock which meant we had to leave it unlocked a few times when we went out. This was obviously not ideal.

  • "This property is obviously in a great location and is a decent size for a large family (like ours) and so we had an enjoyable holiday experience."

We found the kitchen to be well equipped and the laundry space useful. We enjoyed sitting out on the balcony in the evenings and watching the sunset. As has been noted by other visitors, the property really needs a wave of investment in updating and replacing/repairing some of the elements in order to maintain the justification for the high price. These areas include: the rear patio doors (which are virtually broken through rust and very difficult to lock), the lounge furnishings, the outdoors environment (e.g. flower pots with weeds in by front door, and ugly / broken hot tub thing). Please note we could not locate the small key for the windows in the sun room.

  • "This is our third visit to the property which is in an unenviable location which is why we come back."

We do however feel that at north of £2k a week that some updating is needed to bring the property into the 2020's !...Furniture is tired not particularly comfortable and eg living room does not have seating capacity for the properrty fro 7 people. Outdoor furniture is very poor indeed. Three outdoor chairs (two cushions) really is not acceptable for a property at this price level given its a holiday let !. Best regards Julian

  • "The house is in a spectacular location with sea views from many rooms."

It was very spacious and had a welcoming feel. We loved having the beautiful coastal path on our doorstep. The Village Inn at Thurlestone, a 15 mins walk served wonderful meals. This was a real find. Some housekeeping issues: finding the secure key box was difficult despite the description in the arrival notes, the light above the en-suite basin upstairs was broken and there was no hairdryer in the house. I checked every drawer. This was disappointing as 2 of us had thick long hair and it was very wet and cold during our stay.

  • "Love this property, few tiny niggles to keep it off perfect, but v close."

Now take our own pegs and rubber bath mat. Disappointed we were unable to use the front door as we have in the past, as one of our party is disabled, and this did make things a little more difficult, but the views nearly make up for it all.

  • "The accommodation worked really well for us - a family of 5 plus 2 grandparents and a dog."

Everyone loved the spaced as aspect from the house, as well as the local beaches, walks, golf, places to see, etc.

  • "Great location, would be good if windows at front opened."

Would also be good if list of utilities/equipment was supplied with booking details. We did ask for list of equipment and there wasn't one so we brought out own cafetiere, didn't realise there was a microwave etc. and the house was better equipped than we realised

  • "The property is now a little tired & not good value: No dishwasher or washing machine tabs or extra bin bags ."

Faulty window catch & keys that don't fit any windows. En-suite mirror-light not changed from one year to next! Drains overflowing & needed to be cleared. Kitchen equipment - oven tins & trays have not been replaced over the years & cutlery is a mix of replacements, some cheap & poor quality! Most holiday cottages now supply towels & for the rental charged make it poor value.

  • "Love this situation, was not happy that the windows in the twin room could not be used which made the hot nights uncomfortable, and great there are washing facilities, though pegs would be good."

Just a few tweeks, (spare bin bags and an anti slip mat for the bath) and this place would be perfect. Hope to be back next year.

  • "Westward is a very nice property which we have stayed at on four occasions."

It provides us with the accommodation we require and is situated in a very desirable position. There are two points of constructive criticism I would make. Firstly, on our recent stay we experienced a strong smell of toxic fumes which we initially thought came from the boiler which I would categorise as ancient, but when an engineered attended the property discovered that the fumes were issuing from the AGA cooker, which he corrected. However, his comment was that both the boiler and the AGA were past their sell-by date and with that opinion I whole heartedly agree. Secondly, the en-suite shower desperately needs a shelf on which to put such things as soap, shampoo etc.

  • "The property is in a fantastic location and mostly very comfortable."

The property is in desperate need of maintenance. We had problems with Windows in the Kitchen, sun room and two single bed bedroom where none of these could be opened. The bedroom window was the biggest problem with 2 adults in a small room and no ventilation overnight made sleeping conditions very hot and uncomfortable. The patio doors from the lounge were also very difficult to close and lock. The family bathroom caused the external drainage to overflow on to the yard area on use. To finish on a high note the garden is fantastic as it very large and with the drive gates closed our dog could run around the garden safely she was disappointed to return to her usual average sized garden at home. The views from the property are outstandingly beautiful. I wish this was mine to own as it has so much potential

  • "We, and our German Shepherds, fell in love with Westward some years ago."

It offered all the facilities that both man and beast could ever hope for and made each holiday pleasurable and memorable. With deep regret we shall have now accept that those days are over - but never to be forgotten.

  • "Amazing views, comfortable property, been going to this location for over 45 years, this is the best place we have ever stayed in."

Only could have been improved with a bath anti slip mat, and hand rails on stairs. Balcony and look out was spectacular, love the picture on the wall here....where can we get one? Hoping to go here again next year, (family circumstances permitting). Thank you SO much.. would be happy for this to be published on website, but not location, as we try to keep this glorious secret to a select few.

  • "We were disappointed that we were told the hot tub was not available as this was one of the attractions and no price compensation was offered."

Overall we liked the house a lot and enjoyed our stay.

    Jun 2015

  • "A very nice property that we have used 3 times."

However, I did leave a number of comments in the visitors book, some which have been mentioned by others, which I feel have allowed the property to fall below standard expected considering the amount we paid.

  • "Exellent property as always but for price would expect more than: one dustbin bag, one dishwasher tab & no clothes washer tabs."

On the other hand the hats & wine are a nice touch but negated by the above.

  • "Suits our needs in every way except the stairs which my wife had a problem with."

We knew this from our Christmas stay but managed to arrange her daily use quite satisfactorily. (I am still quite numble on my feet and my wife hopes to have a knee replacement at the end of July. Fingers crossed.) We hope to be back at Westward - our two dogs love it.

Not a nice find when celebrating a 40th birthday !! The property is fabulous and we have stayed 3 times previous , but was slightly sullied this time !

About the location

Salcombe 4.6 miles; Kingsbridge 5.1 miles

The picturesque and unspoiled village of Hope Cove lies in the sheltered curve of Bigbury Bay on Devon’s south coast. A choice destination for families, the two beaches offering soft sand and rock pools for sandcastle building and fishing for small crabs. The town remains a fishing village where crabs and lobsters are still landed, however it was once used by smugglers. Many ships have perished around the coast and the wrecks that lie beneath the waves make it a popular spot for divers. Above the beach there are a number of pubs and restaurants. The coastal footpath can be joined from here and leads towards Bigbury-on-sea in one direction and the coastal resort of Salcombe in the other.
