  • "This house is in such a great location on the cliff top on the edge of lovely Hope Cove near Salcombe and immediately on the coast path."

The house is extremely convenient, has panoramic sea views and is very private. The house was very clean and clearly well cared for. We loved staying there, thank you.

  • "Outside lights not working, which were vital for packing and unpacking on arrival and loading up to go home, as there were lots of dark steps."

A couple of torches were kindly provided. The hob was very tricky to cook on without burning everything. The boiler went off after a couple of days, so had no hot water until we saw the note about using the immersion. A plumber came out the next afternoon. The location and views were fabulous and the owners had left just about everything we could ever need for the week. Very comfortable beds. Lots of lovely patio chairs, picnic benches & bbq etc. Unfortunately, the weather was not kind so we didnt get to use the garden much. Loved the little sun room. Great for watching the stormy weather and to take in the view and sunsets. We would definitely stay again.

  • "Our family of seven had a great time here."

Very spacious property with a large, wraparound, well kept garden & plenty of parking at the rear of the house. Having read reviews beforehand I wasn't sure what to expect so went with an open mind. However, I wasn't disappointed at all! The house has a lovely homely feel, is very clean & better than shown in the photos. All beds were extremely comfortable - forgot to look what make of mattresses they were as need to get one for home - please let me know! Sea views from the front & sides are amazing. The walk to the sandy beaches, shops & pubs are only a few minutes away.

Really enjoyed exploring the South West Coastal Path which is accessed via the garden gate. Our dog loved the large garden. Beautiful views of the coastline from the property - we hope to return soon!

  • "On arrival it looks dated and in need of some TLC but we soon fell in love with it!"

Huge space inside and out, the views are awesome. Towels provided added bonus as website stated they weren’t. Very well equipped kitchen and lots of parking.I stayed in the new lanterns apartments last month 2 doors down and as much as it was great to have the mod cons it had no character or privacy. We loved the balcony and being able to play music without worrying we’re bothering anyone else. Awesome house, I pray developers don’t knock it down and turn it into apartments! Highly recommend, hope to return soon.

Thanks for your comments. See below regarding the tiredness of Westward and plans for the future. It won't be spoilt by developers ! Property Owner

  • "Really disappointed by the tired condition of the property, several of the double glazed windows had blown."

The sun room windows had no keys to open, which made it stuffy, musty and hot, but the door opened to the balcony. The garden furniture consisted of random chairs and a table that had seen better days. There was a fault with the patio door, which was rectified the next day by a man to check it out and found it had just come off its runner. The living room floor wooden tiles are a trip hazard, with many of them lifted and coming away. The main bedroom, the mattress was completely gone, as was the strange sprung divan below it. To be honest the whole bed needs replacing. There were items left by previous guests, presciption meds in kitchen cupboard, food in feezer. There is a massive open crack in the outside wall under the balcony above the kitchen window facing the sea. Overall fabulous views, lovely walks, fantastic restaurant The Lobster Pod Bistro. It was just unfortunately let down by a lack of maintenance and lack of attention when cleaning Photos can be provided if required

Thank you for your comments, and I apologise for the shortcomings. We do acknowledge that the property is a little tired and in need of refurbishment. We do plan to replace the building, subject to planning permission and if this is not possible we will refurbish extensively. We will let all previous bookers know about our plans in the autumn. In the meantime we have held down the price we charge. We will look at the double glazed windows which you have reported as blown and see what we can do. The keys to the balcony should have been left in the key box by the back door. This should have been checked by the caretakers before they left the property ready for you. Sorry. You are right, the garden furniture should be sufficient, and the caretaker has added some additional furniture. We have arranged for the plastic chairs to be removed; they were always there as extras which are easily carried around the garden. There was clearly a problem with the sliding door to the garden which was rectified the next day by a man to check it out and found it had just come off its runner. Unfortunately some guests are too rough with the door which was installed quite recently. "The living room floor wooden tiles are a trip hazard, with many of them lifted and coming away". Sorry we will do what we can with these. "The main bedroom mattress was completely gone, as was the strange sprung divan below it. To be honest the whole bed needs replacing". This was something of a surprise to us, but nevertheless we have ordered a replacement. A comfortable bed is essential. "There were items left by previous guests, prescription meds in kitchen cupboard, food in freezer". This is a basic oversight. I think the caretakers must have been in too much of a hurry that day. Sorry. We will try to ensure that this doesn't happen again. "There is a massive open crack in the outside wall under the balcony above the kitchen window facing the sea". Thank you. We hadn't seen this; its in quite an inaccessible place. We will get that looked at. Property Owner

  • "This is a lovely spacious house, a bit dated but comfortable."

The views are spectacular especially during a stormy day. Beds are comfortable but could do with being a bit bigger and downstairs shower is far too small. Excellent location, plenty of parking. The only downside is that there is no recycling collection, we are asked to take it to the church in Marlborough? There is a rubbish collection but why no recycling? We had a lovely holiday though, would recommend it.

Plenty of hot water, and enough items in the kitchen to allow you to cook properly. Would I stay here again, yes, in a heartbeat! Only one very, very small niggle, we found the ironing board, but no iron!

  • "We grew to really love this house."

It did on first look seem a little dated but it had lots of room for our two families to spread out. The balcony was wonderful with sea views. We sat there for coffee and also to watch the great sunsets. The sun room gave a quiet place to relax. The property was spotlessly clean. We unfortunately understand this wonderful house is to be demolished! Such a shame.

  • "One of the other reviews says that the site is up for redevelopment and many of the other reviews comment on the tiredness of the property."

It definitely feels that this property is just being left or having the minimum done to it to keep it ticking over and bringing in income until that happens. It's pretty tired, loose door knobs, carpet stains poor outdoor furniture to enjoy the outdoor space. It looks as though some picnic benches have been dropped there after a previous comment about outdoor furniture. Some decent chairs with backs wouldn't go a miss. There were four plastic ones with backs but this property is for seven. Extra cutlery would also be useful. I understand not wanting to do too much to a property if you are going to knock it down and redevelop but you could charge a fairer price for it or at the very least provide bath and hand towels, for the bathrooms and toilets and a hairdryer, tea towels in the kitchen and aforementioned garden chairs. Showers are fairly snug size wise. We stayed in a similar property last year and everything was provided, smart and working well and there was a welcome hamper on arrival providing milk, tea, scones, and jam, which just felt like the owner was taking a more thoughtful approach to the property they were renting out. It's a fantastic location, next to the coastal path with great views of the coast and great sunsets. Its lovely and close to the beach too. We loved the sunroom on the side of the house and often found ourselves making use of that room first and last thing most days. We also enjoyed having the space of the house and garden to spread out in. It had been left very clean by the C&C cleaners. We weren't at all bothered by the building work two properties down, it looks as though the worst of that is done and we were warned well ahead of the holiday that the approach road would be closed while we were there, so it didn't cause any problems. The main/older part of the house could be really lovely, and I really hope if it is to be completely redeveloped, its done sympathetically and thoughtfully in keeping with the village and location. Hope Cove is a lovely place to stay I would recommend it.

  • "A stunning location, an iconic house and a shame it is to be knocked down and replaced by a new build."

The decoration and facilities are tired in places but the cottage is still comfortable, spacious and well equiped. Surprised towels were not provided as most holidlay lets provide them. Downside was the radiators in the two bathrooms were not working which was a problem with the weather so cold. The main bathroom had nowhere to dry towels. The caretaker came promptly but was unabe to solve the problem. A real irritation was the large building site next door but one - starting at 7am, often muliple diggers in the access road and many trades vans parked making access to drive difficult at times and lots of mud. However - we would visit again - and if you like properties with character book soon before it is knocked down.

  • "This was our second stay at Westward - a property in a brilliant location with terrific views."

The property is great for a family self catering stay - with a well equipped kitchen and comfortable living spaces. It was great to see that the areas we had fed back to Coast and Country on had been updated and improved since our previous stay. For example, the rear patio doors (which are now a great feature), and the TV, dining area flooring, and outside spaces. We noticed that the balcony hand rail is on the wobbly side and probably needs a look at the ensure it is still secure if someone were to lean on it with their full weight. All in all we had a lovely time at Westward, and Coast and Country have been responsive and proactive during the booking process and stay.

  • "We had a great time at Westward, can see why people keep coming back."

The views of the sea made the holiday even more relaxing. You’re just a short drive or if your very fit could walk to High Hope where you can take your dog on the beach. The garden is very secure, this is always a worry for us, but you don’t have to worry. Only negative is that the house needs more outside furniture. If you have 6 adults, you want to sit together. Also you can’t enjoy those fantastic views. It was so lovely and peaceful. The staff of the sister company of Sykes was great when we had a minor issue. Came out twice and we’re very friendly and helpful. Shame about Sykes staff when we rang late on arrival and the telly wasn’t working, told play charades, doesn’t help when you’ve been driving for 7 hours due to terrible traffic. I would definitely recommend Westward House, yes needs a bit of TLC, but it’s a lovely big house, with a beautiful garden and views to die for.

  • "Check out time was confusing."

Sykes had sent an amendment stating a check out time of 1000. However a COVID checking out sheet at the property stated 0900. The back door (sitting room > sea facing garden) was very difficult to lock which meant we had to leave it unlocked a few times when we went out. This was obviously not ideal.

  • "This property is obviously in a great location and is a decent size for a large family (like ours) and so we had an enjoyable holiday experience."

We found the kitchen to be well equipped and the laundry space useful. We enjoyed sitting out on the balcony in the evenings and watching the sunset. As has been noted by other visitors, the property really needs a wave of investment in updating and replacing/repairing some of the elements in order to maintain the justification for the high price. These areas include: the rear patio doors (which are virtually broken through rust and very difficult to lock), the lounge furnishings, the outdoors environment (e.g. flower pots with weeds in by front door, and ugly / broken hot tub thing). Please note we could not locate the small key for the windows in the sun room.

We do however feel that at north of £2k a week that some updating is needed to bring the property into the 2020's !...Furniture is tired not particularly comfortable and eg living room does not have seating capacity for the properrty fro 7 people. Outdoor furniture is very poor indeed. Three outdoor chairs (two cushions) really is not acceptable for a property at this price level given its a holiday let !. Best regards Julian

It was very spacious and had a welcoming feel. We loved having the beautiful coastal path on our doorstep. The Village Inn at Thurlestone, a 15 mins walk served wonderful meals. This was a real find. Some housekeeping issues: finding the secure key box was difficult despite the description in the arrival notes, the light above the en-suite basin upstairs was broken and there was no hairdryer in the house. I checked every drawer. This was disappointing as 2 of us had thick long hair and it was very wet and cold during our stay.

  • "Westward is a very nice property which we have stayed at on four occasions."

It provides us with the accommodation we require and is situated in a very desirable position. There are two points of constructive criticism I would make. Firstly, on our recent stay we experienced a strong smell of toxic fumes which we initially thought came from the boiler which I would categorise as ancient, but when an engineered attended the property discovered that the fumes were issuing from the AGA cooker, which he corrected. However, his comment was that both the boiler and the AGA were past their sell-by date and with that opinion I whole heartedly agree. Secondly, the en-suite shower desperately needs a shelf on which to put such things as soap, shampoo etc.

  • "Love this situation, was not happy that the windows in the twin room could not be used which made the hot nights uncomfortable, and great there are washing facilities, though pegs would be good."

Just a few tweeks, (spare bin bags and an anti slip mat for the bath) and this place would be perfect. Hope to be back next year.

    Jul 2016

  • "The property is now a little tired & not good value: No dishwasher or washing machine tabs or extra bin bags ."

Faulty window catch & keys that don't fit any windows. En-suite mirror-light not changed from one year to next! Drains overflowing & needed to be cleared. Kitchen equipment - oven tins & trays have not been replaced over the years & cutlery is a mix of replacements, some cheap & poor quality! Most holiday cottages now supply towels & for the rental charged make it poor value.

  • "The property is in a fantastic location and mostly very comfortable."

The property is in desperate need of maintenance. We had problems with Windows in the Kitchen, sun room and two single bed bedroom where none of these could be opened. The bedroom window was the biggest problem with 2 adults in a small room and no ventilation overnight made sleeping conditions very hot and uncomfortable. The patio doors from the lounge were also very difficult to close and lock. The family bathroom caused the external drainage to overflow on to the yard area on use. To finish on a high note the garden is fantastic as it very large and with the drive gates closed our dog could run around the garden safely she was disappointed to return to her usual average sized garden at home. The views from the property are outstandingly beautiful. I wish this was mine to own as it has so much potential

About the location

HOPE COVE

Salcombe 4.6 miles; Kingsbridge 5.1 miles

The picturesque and unspoiled village of Hope Cove lies in the sheltered curve of Bigbury Bay on Devon’s south coast. A choice destination for families, the two beaches offering soft sand and rock pools for sandcastle building and fishing for small crabs. The town remains a fishing village where crabs and lobsters are still landed, however it was once used by smugglers. Many ships have perished around the coast and the wrecks that lie beneath the waves make it a popular spot for divers. Above the beach there are a number of pubs and restaurants. The coastal footpath can be joined from here and leads towards Bigbury-on-sea in one direction and the coastal resort of Salcombe in the other.
