  • "Lovely place and was very suitable for our needs."

We did order a essential food package for arrival but it wasn’t there. Floors were dusty and needed mopping and spiders, flys and cobwebs around window sills and windows. We found a pair of knickers under the bed which didn’t belong to us! Also around the farm a collie dog was around which was lovely to see but kept pooing but the gate we go into the farm house. We cleared up 4 poos whilst we were there. Needs more or up to date lighting as very dark. And a lot of the furniture seemed very tired. But we had a lovely time and would definitely go back.

Thank you for taking the time to complete your feedback. We are sorry that we were away when you arrived and when we were back, we apololgised for the cleanliness issues encountered. Our Collie dog is a working farm dog and is usually with my husband but as we were away, he may have been allowed to roam the grounds. We try to keep the downstairs lighting in keeping with the character of the house but in wet weather, due to the age of the property rooms can seem darker. We are glad that you all had a lovely time and we would love to welcome you back at a future date. Property Owner

  • "Our family had a very enjoyable stay in The Farmhouse."

The four children had a wonderful time in this large country cottage and its outside space. We all enjoyed the games room, outdoor heated swimming pool and walking on the nearby moors. The Farmhouse had everything we needed, kitchen space large enough for our party of ten, and the dining room became our most used family chat room. We hardly watched the TV in the lounge. The conservatory room was always lovely and warm and was a great room for the children to play, and drying our washing. Tim and Victoria are wonderful hosts and always happy to help without being intrusive. The children were very sad to leave.

The duvets were yellow stained and has blood spots on them. Also needs some outdoor seating a little something by the back door would be useful. Overall it was a lovely cottage, very rustic and rickety. Would recommend staying there.

Thank you very much for your feedback. The bedding you mentioned has now been removed and was thought in fact to be paint, not blood. The point about the cane chairs has been noted and a few outdoor chairs will be provided by the backdoor. Property Owner

The Farmhouses was beautiful and relaxing. The Farm was lovely and all the animals so well looked after. The games room was a real hit with the children, as was the pool. The gym was an added bonus too. Tim and Victoria were both welcoming and helpful. My husband loved Clay Pigeon shooting with Tim. You are miles from anywhere which was heaven for us, just don't forget anything at the shop! We will definitely go back ( although probably not via Skye's cottages) communication has not been good and ridiculously hard to get hold of during booking process.

Really enjoyed our stay, location was great, house was lovely, kitchen well equipped, bedding lovely, sitting room ideal for our big group to relax close together with enough sitting for all, great fireplace and massive dinning table. Only issue was that the WIFI kept dropping when there were too many of us on it at the same time, and also none of the bathroom/toilet locks worked which I highlighted to the owner on departure. Also, the hoover bag was full so we were not able to use on the day of departure, also mentioned.

Thank you for your feedback and we are pleased to hear you enjoyed your stay at The Farmhouse. We are pleased to hear the locks and hoover nags were resolved during your stay. We have spoken with the owner in relation to the wifi who says this is not so easy to improve due to the rural location and currently there is no option for the fast speeds, although this may be coming in the future. • "If you would like a holiday break on a working farm in quiet countryside surrounded by fields of cows and sheep a stones throw from Dartmoor the the Farmhouse at Burnville Farm would be an ideal location."

A large spacious house is well provided for with a cosy Inglenook fireplace in the dining room. An adjacent building has a gym, games room. There is a swimming pool and a garden for al fresco dining. The Farmhouse is an old building with creaky floors but generally fairly well maintained apart from the wicker chairs in the conservatory which need replacing (Tim the owner has been informed). There are steps in the house so not ideal for the disabled unable to manage them. It is not luxurious but if you don't need five star accommodation then this might be a good choice if you have children.

  • "Had a great week on Dartmoor."

We have stayed in the farmhouse about 20 years ago. It hasn't changed. The kitchen needs an oven/hob that caters for 9 people. The 4 ring hob and 1.5 oven is not adequate. The bathroom facilities could also be improved. The owners were attentive and friendly and delivered more firewood when we requested it, but be aware, you have to pay for it.

Thank you for your feedback. We have never had a comment about the hob being an issue before. The bathrooms and certainly other areas of The Farmhouse have been updated since your previous stay. Plenty of logs are left, but as in most holiday lets, extras are chargeable. We are glad to hear you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

  • "Lovely big farmhouse, situated on the edge of Dartmoor!"

Location was great, situated on a working farm. Staying just before Christmas it was muddy but we're used to that with 3 dogs and we came prepared. We could use an enclosed field nearby(one without sheep in it) and the dogs had the time of their lives! The farmhouse is unique in having a traditional dining room but very modern ktichen. Very very spacious, I got lost between rooms and doors at first :) One or two glitches with radiators not working, remote for TV not working etc but owners sorted straight away. Perhaps leave a radiator key handy, as my partner willingly would have 'bled' the relevant radiators? Loved watching the farmer/owner do his work around the farmhouse but sympathised with his 15 hour day! Grandchildren appreciated a bedroom each and the brownies which were eaten straight away, Everything was beautifully clean. Thank you for the stay-we will be back!

  • "The house is large, comfortable and well equipped."

The games room is a real bonus for a wet cold week in Devon! The only thing I would say didn’t meet expectation was the lack of an enclosed garden. For some the partial enclosed garden across the yard would be ok but we have one reactive dog so having the farm dogs (albeit friendly farm dogs) wondering around by the back door with no enclosed safe space was stressful. Mr Cunningham was very friendly (without being intrusive) and let us know which fields had cattle/sheep and which ones we were free to wonder so there was plenty of space just not enclosed garden which was disappointing.

Thank you so much for taking the time to send in your feedback regarding your recent stay. We are pleased you found the house comfortable and well equipped. Taking all feedback seriously, we have considered your comment regarding an enclosed garden, we feel that this would enhance our offering. Therefore, we intend to action this before the beginning of next season. We do hope that you will holiday with us again in the future. Property Owner

A problem with the shower was resolved promptly by the owner with minimal disruption to our holiday. There was just one point I would like to make - the main description of the house does not make it clear that the pool is shared with other properties. Given the current covid situation a rota was in place for pool usage which allocated 1.5hours per day for its use to each property. Looking at the description of other properties on the farm, the shared nature of this facility is much clearer. I would highly recommend that the description is amended to bring "the Farmhouse" in line with "The Red barn" and "the Coach House".

  • "Very cosy farmhouse."

Loved the open fire which the owners had prepared ready for our first night. We then had 3/4 further evenings using the leftover logs which was lovely. If you have a toddler I would recommend a stair gate or potentially looking elsewhere as there are many steps/stairs to navigate in the house, as well as a large glass coffee table. However we safely moved that into the side hallway which gave lots more room for games and play space for our daughter. We had no accidents with her, she loved the high chair and we were very pleased to see an actual cot rather than a travel cot which we were expecting. The beds were extremely comfortable and warm and all rooms and bathrooms were very clean! We took 3 dogs with us and they all loved their daily strolls around the farm. There is a garden area but something more enclosed for our (pampered) pooches would have been ideal. You really are on a working farm and it was great to see! We saw Sheep being weighed by the farmer from our window, had them all being herded past the house and could hear them and the cows each day. The farmer Tim was very friendly and gave us some tips on where to go. I would recommend visiting the Whitelady Waterfall a few mins down the road, it was raining when we went but well worth the visit! Local Donkey Sanctuary about 20 mins drive was also a lovely family trip out, as was the National Marine Aquarium at Plymouth- would highly recommend this too. We were unaware that the pool at the Farmhouse was shared (later saw this in the small print on the website) and due to current circumstances was limited to one 1.5hr slot per day which with the weather we could only do on one day and found this time slot to be too short. Lovely and clean though and the gardens are very pretty too. We all had a lovely time and it was a great place for us all to spend time together as a family, have cosy evenings and beautiful walks. The views from this place are absolutely stunning!!

The farmhouse is spacious and well-equipped and comfortably furnished in a traditional style. A winning feature is the enormous open fireplace in the dining room, in which a fire had been made up before our arrival. Additional logs are available for purchase. The dining room is dark and cosy and a good place to hunker down when Dartmoor's notorious rain or fog sets in. The light-filled conservatory is a wonderful place to have breakfast and is stocked with huge numbers of board games. The small gym in a converted barn opposite the house has a few good-quality machines, there is also an indoor games room which we didn't use. It is possible to walk from the farm direct (through a few fields and over a few stiles) onto the moor - on Tim's recommendation we walked via Gibbets Hill and Wheal Betsy to the excellent Elephant's Nest pub at Horndon and back via Mary Tavy. There is plenty to do and see in the vicinity: the charming village of Lydford with the famous Lydford Gorge walk practically within walking distance from the farm, the elegant UNESCO-listed market town of Tavistock about 20 minutes' drive away, large National Trust properties with extensive grounds at Cotehele and Buckland Abbey, and the scenic Tamar Valley Railway offering a picturesque alternative way of travelling into the great port city of Plymouth from the railhead at Gunnislake. A short drive takes you to the many attractive sites on the moor: the stone rows and circles at Merrivale were particularly atmostpheric on a damp and windy Dartmoor day. Overall a very enjoyable visit!

The property

The Farmhouse is one of the three lovely holiday homes on Burnville Farm, looking like it came from a child's picture book.

It is big and old and stands on the edge of the traditional Devon farmyard.

Leave your boots in the hall and head through to the comfy sitting room with its traditional beams, off which is a bright sun room for fine days.

The kitchen is well equipped for preparing meals to enjoy around the big sociable table beside the open fire in the dining room, where fascinatingly the table is an ancient dough trough.

The four comfortable bedrooms are all upstairs, peaceful places to sleep well after busy days exploring the area and enjoying the farm amenities.

Outside, you will find your own big enclosed pretty garden with lawn, trees, stream and barbecue 20 yards from the house.

Beyond this, there is as much freedom and fun as you could wish for.

You are welcome to wander the 250 acre farm and help when possible, picnic beside the pond, swim in the shared seasonal outdoor swimming pool, play tennis and use the shared games room and gym.

Maybe arrange with the friendly owners to try clay pigeon shooting and archery or hire mountain bikes and head out over the open moorland which surrounds the farm or on the Granite Way cycle trail (small extra charges may apply).

This is brilliant walking country too, or if you have horses you can bring them and ride since stabling and grazing are available.

Golf and gliding can be arranged nearby and Roadford Lake is excellent for water sports.

With so many activities available, yet in such a peaceful spot, The Farmhouse is an ideal location for a fabulous family break.
