“Brook Cottage was as described, 5-star accommodation set in the beautiful countryside of South Devon.”

The directions provided by the owner were excellent and it wasn’t difficult to find, although some of the lanes to access it were quite small and, for us at least, it was a drive rather than walk to the beach, these were also easily located. Our favourite beach in the Hams is Bigbury on Sea which took us between 25-35 minutes but armed with a picnic and beach chairs/swimwear we spent two (different) days there. Parking is quite expensive (£12/day) but if you go equipped you don’t need ...

Parking is quite expensive (£12/day) but if you go equipped you don’t need to spend anything else other than ice creams. Mothecombe was lovely though at least a 5-minute walk down - if you’re not fit (and I am not!) then you can at the very least double that on the way back as the steep lanes were quite hard - if you’re fit (like my teenagers) then you won’t notice it so much. Hope Cove was another great visit and there are two or three lovely pubs serving food, a small car park and fantastic views and coastal walks. We were lucky with the weather and had a wonderful week away with the family, made all the more pleasant by returning to such a beautiful cottage. We will be back

The property

This smart cottage is located at the end of a row of cottages in a peaceful valley hamlet near the Coast Path, 1½ miles from Newton Ferrers.

With a split level layout and stylish décor, it is comfortable accommodation in a relaxing rural spot.

Step up through the front door into your kitchen which doubles beautifully as a sociable dining space.

Beside a glass balustrade, open tread stairs lead you down to the lofty sitting room with country-style wood burning stove and doors to open to the terrace.

The three comfortable bedrooms are spread across two levels, with an en suite twin on the ground floor and an en suite double and a twin with beams on the upper floor.

Your outdoor terrace has a table and chairs for sunny meals and if you head through a gate and over a little bridge across a stream you will discover an enclosed garden with a lawn sheltered by trees and tranquil views across meadows enjoyed by hens and alpacas.

If you would like to help feed the alpacas, there are opportunities sometimes and you can even buy an alpaca scarf as a souvenir.

Head to the waterside pubs in Newton Ferrers for lunch or supper, or Plymouth has excellent city eateries and entertainment.

Mothecombe beach, a beautiful bay which has starred in films such as International Velvet, is three miles from the cottage or take your nets and buckets to Wembury which has great rock pools and a conservation centre.

For walkers, you only need to join the South West Coast Path a mile away for lovely scenery and challenging hikes.

Brook Cottage is a lovely retreat for enjoying the South Hams.

About the location

NEWTON FERRERS

Plymouth 8 miles.

A tranquil, picturesque village in the South Hams area of Devon, on a bend of the River Yealm leading up from the South Devon coast (1 mile). The perfect haven for sailors, for those who love messing about near water and for those who appreciate stunning and civilised countryside. There is a local butcher, chemist, post office and grocer in Newton Ferrers and an organic farm shop just two miles away. The village pub, with fantastic views across the water towards Noss Mayo and the creek, serves good food and drink. The area is blessed with many walks that meander along the waterside and across the fields, while to the north Dartmoor's high tors and open spaces beckon those who love wild country. The city of Plymouth with its shops, Marine Aquarium and Barbican quayside area is just 8 miles away while beautiful Totnes with its 'alternative' view on life is a must. If the beach rather than boats is what you seek, you won't do better than the beautiful sands at Mothecombe and Bigbury just a few miles down the road. Both are accessible by road or boat from Newton Ferrers. There are a number of excellent golf courses nearby.
