  • "The apartment was exactly as described and we couldn't have asked for a better place, overlooking the beach."

We've stayed in the block before and it is truly a unique spot. You can't beat the views onto Burgh Island and the kids loved waking up in the morning and seeing the ever-changing view - was the tide in or out, what the weather was like and whether the sea tractor was operational. The ground floor apartment itself was very comfortable, and exceptionally clean and had absolutely everything one could possibly need. Bathrooms were very modern and everything had been thought of down to having a more cosy light over the basin so you didn't have to put on the main bright light. Heated towel rails were a bonus. We had lovely weather for most of the week and enjoyed time on the beach and in the lovely indoor pool and then our last 2 days were spent visiting Greenway (Agatha Christie's holiday home) which we accessed via a small "ferry" from Dittesham and then Totnes on our way home on the last day, but there is plenty to do in the area so you can be as active or as relaxed as you like. The owners left an amazing chocolate cake and a bottle of wine for our arrival which we enjoyed - thank you!

Thank you so much for your wonderful comments about our apartment. We’re pleased that you and your family enjoyed your week there. Bigbury on Sea is certainly a very special and unique place. Lyn & John Property Owner

The only issue we had was with the lift which was put out of service by an OTIS engineer mid week and was still not operating when we departed on Friday, (just one of those things), but an explanation at the time would have been helpful!

Thank you so much for your positive feedback. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay and consider it ‘home from home’. Historically the lifts have been very reliable and we apologise for the inconvenience this caused. We were unaware of the problem. Lyn & John Property Owner

And as always, beautiful, cosy, clean and everything we might need, Home from home. And with a yummy chocolate cake and milk in the fridge too. The apartment exceeded our expectations and we appreciated the welcome gifts and provisions. We were pleased with the selection of dvds, books and games available too. The view was captivating, in all weathers! The apartment is ideally located for the beach where we enjoyed kite flying and our son loved digging, rock pooling and learning to surf with Discovery Surf school. The indoor pool was a little cooler than expected but still fun. The cafe provided some tasty food which we were able to eat at or take back to our apartment and we pre-booked as recommended. The food at the nearby Journeys End was also delicious. Thank you for a wonderful week and we hope to return in the future.

We stayed in November (before the cold snap) and despite being quite hardy people found the apartment chilly during the day and evening. Perhaps the underfloor heating could be programmed to be a little warmer for a little longer whilst letting during the colder months. Apart from that this is a great place to stay.

! Outside table and sun loungers to enjoy the spectacular scenery. Good comms for arrival, key collection and departure details. We were fortunate that we had brilliant weather and the walks, beaches and scenery locally were stunning especially from the top of the island. We have fallen in love with this location and have already booked again. The lanes are tight to drive down with only passing bays in places so best to try to avoid busy times and use the A roads as less stressful but you have to use the lanes from A379 as it’s the only Road to get to Bigbury on Sea. Locally there are only a few shops , one is the beach shop that does sell some lovely souvenirs and a small Nisa food shop on the campsite in the next bay, Holywell Stores is in St Anne’s Chapel, so either come prepared or expect to drive the lanes again to get supplies. I think that some information in the apartment on what is nearby i.e locally produced produce, Farm Shops, farmers markets / days etc would be useful and also if they deliver ? We had a few meals out in the leisure club and Pilchards Inn and enjoyed both restaurants the food was very good - both need reservations for dinner, the staff in both were very friendly . The Venus Cafe on the beach lower car park was also lovely for a breakfast, coffee and a cheeky ice cream! Lots of people had dogs and the beach is perfect for them! The sea tractor is interesting to watch coming back and forth as the tide comes in and out over the causeway and worth a ride for the experience, time it right and you can just walk across to the Island and the pub which always seemed popular, you do pay a deposit on the plastic glass if you sit outside but is refunded if you return. Only small niggle - the BBQ’s / fires on the beach - when they were below the apartment the smoke drifted onto the patio and into the apartment if the doors were open, so a little annoying but it was mainly at the weekend. Honestly, you won’t be disappointed with the apartment or location we had a wonderful relaxing time , highly recommended and can’t wait to return !

  • "Our third time in this wonderful apartment."

We love the terrace as opposed to the smaller balconies so snap this apartment up whenever we can! It is very comfortable and well equipped particularly the kitchen. We would have liked an additional door key and contacted the manager who just said it had been lost and no further help was offered. We also had to ask for the windows keys so we could lock them due to having an autistic child, this was provided but unfortunately the window lock in the bedroom our daughter was sleeping was broken. Also disappointed that the additional door into the shower room/toilet from the corridor has been made into a cupboard meaning you have to enter the bathroom via the bedroom so even if someone was asleep you still needed to go through the bedroom.

The view is exceptional, eating breakfast will never be the same again. All the rooms were beautifully presented and the entire complex was well maintained and cared for. The variety of entertainment, books, DVDs and games was appriciated, especially on the wild wet days, when we could not go out for long walks. The gifts of wine and chocolate cake were very thoughtful. Thank you to everyone.

Burgh Island View Apartments

Just 20 yards from Bigbury-on-Sea's big and splendid sandy beach, looking to Burgh Island Causeway, are 29 stunning, high quality apartments, of which we let a number. Within the same building are excellent leisure facilities and a restaurant. The views over the sea to the south and west, and at low tide of a vast expanse of smooth washed yellow sand reaching to Burgh Island, are outstanding. The island's jolly pub, The Pilchard, is fun to visit (long-legged sea tractor at high tide). All the apartments, which are privately owned and individually furnished, have those sensational views, and are wonderfully light, with large, airy open-plan living/dining/kitchens and glazed doors to balconies or terraces. The smallish bedrooms, at the back (without views), have good quality en suite bath or shower-rooms. The apartment building is three-storey. Most apartments have easy access (short walk from parking and between 5 and 9 steps down to the lift). The ground floor (still high above the beach) apartments have big terraces, the first and top floor apartments have very good-sized balconies. The leisure facilities, which are free for guests to use and open from 10am every day (except Christmas Day), include a fine indoor swimming pool (40' x 20' x 4'6"), spa pool, well-equipped gym (treadmill, steps, cycles, Concept II Rower and other instruments of torture) and sauna (no children under 14 in gym or sauna). There are changing rooms, a shower and disabled loo. The Club restaurant/smart bar, is open 10am to 9pm during the High Season, reservations recommended (for all other times of the year, please contact the Leisure Centre for opening times), serves excellent food throughout the day, with a popular dinner menu which varies daily and themed evenings. You can also order meals to take to your apartment. The comfy lounging area has sofas and WiFi, and the sunny outdoor terrace faces the sea.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £100.

About the location

BIGBURY-ON-SEA

Modbury 6 miles; Plymouth 12 miles.

Bigbury-on-Sea is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is ideal for family holidays. Dusted with sand and lapped by shallow waters, the beach offers safe fun for groups particularly if you’ve got children in tow. In addition, Bigbury-on-Sea beach is dotted with rock pools, so there’s plenty of entertainment for budding marine biologists. There’s also a wide and varied selection of watersports available to visitors who prefer their holidays to feature a little adrenaline rush. Windsurfing and kite-surfing are popular here, with hire facilities located right on the beach. To give you some peace of mind, there are lifeguards present at Bigbury-on-Sea beach during May to September and the beach also has a first-aid room. You can even take the dog onto the beach, although they are restricted to certain areas during the summer. Bigbury’s most famous landmark is Burgh Island, which overlooks the beach itself. The island is accessible at low tide, when the waters reveal a causeway that links it to the beach. However, when the tide is in you can still reach the island by hitching a ride on the popular and unique ‘sea tractor’. Burgh Island boasts an award-winning hotel, elegant and rather genteel, it’s an ideal romantic retreat for couples. Explore the South Devon coast with its fabulous sandy beaches and its breathtakingly beautiful coastal path or simply take time to visit some of the charming estuary towns and villages dotted throughout the area, such as Salcombe, Kingsbridge and Dartmouth. The city of Plymouth and the wild open spaces of Dartmoor are also both close at hand.
