“Alpen Rose was every bit as nice as the pictures shown, homely, clean, welcoming and comfortable.”

Everything you could want was catered for. There is a lovely little walled garden you come through to enter the back of the house. The cottage is in a perfect location to explore Portland, which itself was a revelation to us, not having been there before. Everything you could want was catered for. There is a lovely little walled garden you come through to enter the back of the house. The cottage is in a perfect location to explore Portland, which itself was a revelation to us, not having been there before. The view from the top of the isle over Chesil Beach at sunset was simply breathtaking, quite literally! We were lucky enough to get quite a bit of sunshine despite bad weather reports and the view over Chesil Beach in the sunshine was magical too. The cottage is only about 7 or 8 minutes away from the Portland Bill lighthouse and though we knew we wouldn't yet be allowed to climb it because of Covid, we decided to visit the spot anyway. We sat on massive rocks watching (and listening) to huge white crested breakers crashing onto the rocks below. We never expected that, and the experience was mesmerising. Because we stayed the week before lockdown was due to ease on May 17th no indoor hospitality or museums etc. were open, however there seemed to be no shortage of cafes. little shops and restaurants to visit on Portland from the 17th. There is a supermarket just 5 minutes drive from the cottage where you can stock up on supplies, and a wonderful little fish and chip shop just 3 minutes walk away which I can highly recommend. The beach at Weymouth was stunning, and we loved walking the length of it, with the tide coming in and beautiful white waves lapping the beach from an aquamarine sea. We feel very fortunate to have found Alpen Rose on Portland and cannot wait to go back again.
